So half the people with influenza needed medical attention and 1.5 % needed hospitalization.

So coronavirus 80% get over it, 20% need medical attention, and 5% need hospitalization?

One thing you have to realize is that this is not the "common flu", emphasis on "common".

What scares people is that this is new and is spreading so quickly globally. We have all caught a cold or the flu and got over it with some discomfort but we generally know that our bodies can fight it.

With this Covid-19, we still do not know for sure if our bodies can fight it or not so that is what has people worried. The fact that it is spreading at such an alarming rate is bad too, I have been around enough people with a cold and I do not always catch it. With this, we again do not know what we are dealing with, so yes that does add an element of panic.

Estimation of the deaths by COVID-19 world wide by the end of this is 520,000,000.

Remember, influenza isnt on the back burner because covid 19 is out and about. This is like a double situation, only covid is much more transmittable.

The difference is people get a flu they go to the doctor, they get something right now they are told to self isolate and not go because of how contagious this is. We're also using stats that might not define medical attention the same. Presumably, the way medical medical visits for the flu are tallied, every single confirmed case of Covid-19 would be qualify as they did a swab so that they could test. You get a flu, you might go to the doctor to get swabbed to check if it's strep throat and antibiotics are needed, if not, go home and take a few days off work.

The key part that you seem to be glossing over is hospitalization and death rates. They are wildly different.

The other bit that's getting ignored is how quick this is spreading. Without a vaccine, nobody is immune so it's spreading like wildfire starting in pockets. Flu is already in every community, so it's a stable threat. Covid19 in still in it's rising action, and the burden it creates on healthcare above and beyond baseline healthcare needs means that the system will get overloaded. Think of this like trying to get out of the CTC parking lot on a game day 5 years ago vs trying to get out on a Sunday afternoon in August.

Can't see it coming anything close to that

The added issue is fear and panic..We are one VIP death away from panic.

Let one youngish VIP die..and we will be past panic.

Every 4 days the number of infected doubles.

The number 1 at risk are elderly that smoke.
The number 2 are people that are obese.

China has a lot of old men that smoke and America has a lot of obese people.
What age do they define as elderly? 70 and above?

This is the kind of situation where you have to overreact to get ahead of things. Then these over reactions hill become normal protocol next time we see something like this, and new protocols will he added.

I wouldn’t suggest bunkering down type of overreact, but putting the community through a light stockpile is good to gauge community action, as well as to test government response actions.

We wouldn’t want to be in here arguing with Stylizer if this was H1N1 as an airborn pathogen.

I still wish the markets would stop overreacting. I mean I know eventually they'll recover, and I don't need to sell what I have for anything at the moment but it's really painful to see your investments drop between 10-20% in the course of a few weeks.

China first reacted in December. From patient 1 until today, that should mean ~ 6 million cases.

not to minimize this, but the total cases are way less.

or is the 4 day doubling thing, new? in which case, ouch where we may be heading.

It's quite doable. Shut the border to international travellers but leave it open for commercial cargo. The economy will keep ticking for the most part.

This is largely my fear. I’m not an American citizen so any border shutdown while I’m in Canada would upturn my life in a big way.

Cancelled my trip. Full refund on hotel and lift tickets. Not looking forward to dealing with flights.

In an uncontrolled environment.

1) It's china, we have no way of knowing the true numbers.
2) They closed an entire city.

Ohio is estimating that they have 100,000 cases. The CDC has tested 77 people.

China took this shit seriously. Trump...not so much.

I don’t know man. People are far more stable than we give ourselves credit for. What are you expecting to happen? Violence and looting?
