Beyond stupid.

Would be Dorion-esque asset management to trade a 1st for a 34YR old Tanev when we're sitting bottom 5.

The kind of rumour that makes one question the competence of our new GM.

Not a good comparison imo.

This article will help - stats toward bottom of the article.

It's not about how well he's playing this year though for me.

It's the age and where the sens are.

Ottawa is towards the bottom of the league, and will need to hire a new coach for next year so there will be another adjustment period.

So the sens are unlikely to be a threat next year either.

So does it make sense to trade prospects or draft picks when we aren't competing in the next couple years and this defenseman won't be any good anymore while we start to compete. That, and we have barely any prospects or picks and should focus on restocking our cupboards.

Of course this is in response to trading a 1st or 2nd or good prospect for him this year.

I'm very ok with targetting him as a UFA on a 1-2 year deal this summer.

Ya, I mean, we have to trust these guys to make some assessments within bounds. Not every 34 Y/O equals another.

I don't think anyone is enamored with trading for older players, but there is some nuance required there. We've seen how impactful Giroux has been and he was older than Tanev when acquired.

I don't know if Tanev is that guy. Personally, I like him, but still nervous and think we should look at other options. MAYBE as a UFA, sure as shit not for a 1st +.

I think this team is getting closer to contending. The talent is there, i think, even if the maturity and attention to detail isn't.

NJD has very comparable GF / GA this season as we do, even though their record is a lot better. And I think they're close to contending.

Where do you think vegas will rank us next year at season start? Bottom ten? Just toss out a number. Go on the record.

I don't see what makes you optimistic about becoming a contender...we have so many holes.

And yes, probably bottom 10...20th at best is my guess. No way we rank in the teens.

So I ask you, should a team that is likely ranked 20-25th next year be spending assets when they're cupboards are bare, to acquire an asset that won't be good anymore by the time they're finally ready to compete?

Tanev is highly coveted and has a big price tag?

I think flames fans are hoping for like a 2nd in return.

If Calgary takes back money to facilitate the trade, he should return a 1st.

Zadorov returned a 2nd because Calgary didn't want to take back money. This limited the market for Zadorov. He would have returned more if Calgary were willing to make the trade cap neutral.

There is more cap flexibility at the TDL, because teams not in LTI bank cap space throughout the season. Still, they probably need to take back a contract to maximize his value.

If he goes to Ottawa, it might be a scenario where the market for him is a 2nd, but our 2nd is close in value to a late 1st. It's likely to be in the top 40 of the draft. A 2nd from a contender is going to be much closer to 62nd overall.

I also wonder if maybe we make a hockey trade for him. Calgary has a hole in their lineup because of Dube both not playing well this season and now gone entirely. While nobody here wants to move Joseph, if Joseph is getting moved anyways, Joseph for Tanev would be more tolerable than giving up the Boston pick or our high 2nd. Calgary is fighting for a playoff spot, which is why a hockey trade might be appealing to them.

For me, it's about coming with an extension, the length of the term, and what we give up.

For those reasons, I don't think he'll be coming here as I mentioned in my previous post.

I was just reacting to the comparisons to Burrows or Stepan.

I would hate to trade Joseph for him just because of age and contracts.

Joseph is much more likely to help us win a cup in the future being here for 4 more years than tanev is being here for a couple years...

Just because I don't think we have a window in the next couple years.

This team is more than a year away from competing. We should be looking at building a team that can compete in the years 25-26-27. Tanev isn't that. If you can't get him in free agency, target someone much younger for the contending years.

Agreed. I'll be clear. I'm on board with a 2 year UFA deal. Not really interested otherwise, and I think teams will give him 3, maybe even 4, so I think we're hooped. I also think he signs with whoever acquires him at the deadline.

That said, I agree with the comparison issue. I think Tanev has more to give than either of those two and has the right type of attitude that I think was in question here with Stepan and the circumstances. I didn't see much fight out of him, beyond being washed up.

You gotta make the playoffs first. Then Maybe you are a contender the following season. This team is absolutely not a contender. It's no where close to being a contender.

This team has average talent probably around 16th in the league. However it's not built properly. They have no experience, they do not defend at a level of a playoff team but most importantly they have the worst goaltending in the NHL. Impossible to win with what they have between the pipes.

That's why you don't trade for 34 year Olds. They also have the 31st ranked prospect pool. What they need to do is continue to build through the draft and let it happen organically. Fix the goaltending and d. The d is way too small and easy to play against. Tanev would be great if the team was further along and had picks and prospects to spare. They simply do not.

I saw a trade suggested Chychrun and Tarasenko at 50% retained for Schneider, Kakko and Goodrow. That's a deal I can get behind. Schneider is the young physical RD this team needs. He's the type of d they should be going after.

It's hard to predict where the team will be projected to be next year right now. I think there's gonna be some big changes. If they go in with this d core and goaltending I think they're another bottom 10 finish.

If they address both I like them to compete for a bubble playoff spot.

I understand i was probably exaggerating with those examples.

I just think it's much more likely that he performs closer to them in the next couple years on Ottawa then being some top line player like Giroux has.

If tanev is in our top 4 in 2 years at almost age 37, it's because we haven't had any development from other D and lost some assets.

Where did tanev rank in an all around defenseman poll? If he's #3-#4 on Ottawa now, I can't imagine how helpful he'll be in a couple years when we're competing and he's a lot slower and lost a step.

Tanev is easily the most underrated defenceman in the league and has been for a while. Traditional old school player.

I’d still aim for Weager. However I do have rumours that he doesn’t wanna come back

I said getting closer to becoming a contender.

I'm optimistic for a lot of the same reasons neutral observers are fairly optimistic about the young talent on the sens. We've got a lot of promising young talent and don't see the 'so many holes' you're seeing. Goaltending is obviously the big question mark.

I'm not one to jump on the manic panic and I still like what i see if we can put it all together.

As for Tanev, I could see a scenario where I'd trade some assets for a signed tanev, but i don't think I'd consider any of our top 3 picks in this coming draft.

If that's what it costs, I'd rather focus on UFA market in the offseason.

Again, not advocating for a trade, but what if he did have 2 effective seasons and that were it? There's value to that imo, especially with how fragile and poorly fitted the D has been. By all accounts, RD are going to be very difficult to find.

Agreed on Tanev, to an extent.

I would back up the truck for Weegar, but I think he's just too valuable for them to let him go. He is literally perfect for what we're looking for.

Maybe, but I doubt that. That's why I said if he had a 2 year extension & depending on what we had to give up. Think Giroux versus those other bad comparisons to the other players.

Fair enough.

Yes, goaltending is a hole.

I'd like to see a top end playmaker. A guy who can flirt with an assist per game.

I'd like to see better 2 way forwards. We're missing that selke competing forward.

Were also missing physical shut down D.

I would say we probably have 5-10 player holes including goalies in that number.

Probably 2 years away from competing for the playoffs.

I just don't see him on Girouxs level.

I see him more as an aging volchenkov or Phillips.

Not a true first pair D, but someone who can play on the second pair and anchor a shut down pair....and now he's on the verge of declining very soon.

That's not the level I see Giroux as.

I guess my point would be I would rather not cheap out and "settle" for 2 years of an aging player. I'm not denying he can have value.

I'm just saying, if the goal is to win a cup, we should aim a little higher by aiming younger. Someone who can be here when we compete.

Because having him for 2 years only to then have to spend extra assets to replace him with a younger body seems redundant. Save those assets you would trade for 2 bodies (tanev and his replacement) and just go for the replacement right now.

Can I ask for a clarification here?

If you think we're 16th in the league for talent right now, wouldn't that position us well to contend going forward, given how young the roster is?

Where do you think we'll be in 3 seasons?

I think the Tanev we see today, could absolutely be part of a cup winning top 4. But fair to question how long as age is always a concern.

There are a lot of discouraging lists put out here for available top 4RD, so I'm feeling discouraged in general that they're about to find some decade long stalwart.

Again though, not loving the idea of this through trade. For a free wallet for 2 years, I like it for the right price.

I think you're confused bythe usage of the word talent.

Their talent doesn't get better as they age. They become more well rounded.

The talent is what it is.

He's saying we have average talent going forward, but play super unstructured hockey which brings us down from average to below average.

We need much more than average skill to win the cup one day, so we need to bring in big game players. You draft those guys. We need to restock our cupboards and draft high end talent.

Maybe we should identify young RHD and trade up to draft them? Or maybe overpay to get them, and then once we have them, we're set and then can worry about filling other holes.

Where we are in our window(or lack there of) and where tanev is in his career, makes no sense. He doesn't have the Girouxs "going home" reasoning either.

It just makes no sense.

Tanev makes a lot of sense. Big RD who plays at a good level still. I suspect the sens know they can sign him as it was rumoured before that Toronto knew they could sign him. Perhaps he wants to stay in Ontario

The cost of getting him will be the deal breaker. If its a 2nd its probably worth getting ahead. If it turns into a 1st rounder then just look elsewhere

Well, I'm sure hoping someone can be inserted before then. We'll have to pay through the nose if it's anyone able to step in today, especially being that RD is the most in demand position in the league.

I guess that's maybe where we might veer paths. I'm still expecting this teams window to be here sooner than later, if we're talking 3-4 years from now, we might as well start packing Brady's bags.

I think people will be surprised by Tanev's choice. I bet he stays in Canada as he seems to prefer it and speaks of it highly, and I think he'll take a reasonable 2-3 year deal. I think he'll earn every penny of it too.

Again though, giving up a 1st+ for us to sign him is not reasonable imo.

I get the feeling that Tanev’s “best before date” is about now. There would have to be a sweet deal on the table for me to pull the trigger on trading for him.
