I'd be going very hard after Carrier, Roy and Hakanpaa for a 3/4 year deal. Brings them to age 32, 32 and 35. Carrier is going to be the steal of the UFA period. I'd offer him a 6/7 year deal.

All 3 could be very stable top 4 defensive D getting 19ish mins per night, not breaking the bank, and not headed for a decline in the immediate future. With Chabot playing up and down the ice opposite them, it makes for a very well balanced unit, both in talent and cap.
Haven’t watched much of Carrier. Hakanpaa and Roy might be getting raises we can’t deal with.

We should be able to get 2 cost effective RDs here.

Roy yes, but Carrier and Hakanpaa aren't more than top-6 D on a winning team.
Hasn't Hakanpaa spent most of the last two seasons playing on the 2nd pair with Lindell on a pretty good Dallas team? They went to the conference finals last year with him in their top 4.

I’m not giving out any points this year.
I’m saying I expect next year to not resemble this year in the slightest.
Nor do I believe they will finish 28th this year, I expect they will finish between 22-26th

You are welcome to believe they will suck again.
Im with you on the 22-26
Then normal progression is 15-20
The season after is real PO aspirations
With a 37 yo Tanev at 6-8 MM$
That's my point
We shouldnt trade for tannev at this stage

Carrier is 27
Lol. Well then. What is the column beside UFA then?

The one beside Tanev said 34.1 which is pretty much exact since he just turned 34 on Dec. 20th and glanced at a few others that seemed correct, so I just assumed that was their age lol. Said 32.9 beside Carrier.

It is age, have no clue why Carrier's is so incorrect

He's 4 months older than Chabot

I think they’ll make the playoffs next year, and I think Tanev signs somewhere between $4.5-6 depending on term.
I’ll add a caveat, if we pick up another 1st from Tarasenko, and Tanev agrees to a 3 year 5 million deal I’d deal the lowest of the three picks.

In order of my preferences:

Montour
Pesce
Roy
Colin Miller
Demelo
Walker
Myers

Roy yes, but Carrier and Hakanpaa aren't more than top-6 D on a winning team.

My order of preference, factoring in salary expectations, age, etc.:

Roy
Pesce
Carrier
Demelo/Hakanpaa
Walker
Miller

Myers

His last contract was 4x4.5
I doubt he signs for 3x5

I think he will just depends where.
I don’t think anyone is paying him more than 6, even us as UFA wouldn’t pay him that for more than 2 years.

Yea that was such a a dumb trade. Pretty much everyone was on the same page that trading Stepan should've resulted in a pick going to the team acquiring him. Not many teams could've acquired him at his cap hit. It was a bad miscalculation on the market value for him.

That's besides the fact that he was already extremely slow and that Dorion had planned for us to use him *on the 2nd line*. A little pro scouting wouldn't have hurt, Stepan was known to be a guy who didn't take training and nutrition very seriously on top of it. He was going to be a "good pro" for us. The irony is just incredible. Anyone with half a brain could've done better.

They acquired him to be a veteran leader. Just goes to show how bad a GM Dorion really is. Horrible horrible trade. That and the Hoffman trade for Boedker instead of picks and then Hoffman traded to FLA for those exact same picks was a straight disrespect to human intelligence.
Yes, I initially thought we were getting the 2nd to take on Stepan, but was pretty surprised to learn that we were giving up the 2nd. LOL.

Were we (Melnyk) trying to get above the cap floor that year? I can't remember as Stepan's cap hit was $6 m whereas he only got paid $2m.. That's the only thing that I can think of that would have made him a trade target (for Melnyk).

No, that was clarified a lot. They must have liked the player and cost to acquire.

He's been carried by Lindell, Hakanpaa isn't a top-4 D when it comes to defensive IQ, skating, or puck retrieval. He's got top-4 physical ability/boxing out but leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to actually hitting.

Hakanpaa just played top 4 D, with 15 seconds less than Lindell, on a team that lost 4-2 in the conference finals, and is currently on the shutdown pair with Lindell on the 2nd place team in the West.

I'd rather Carrier over all guys, guy can flat out play. 19 mins in a defensive role next to Chabot, he'd thrive. Not big, but smart and great defensively. He’s getting looked over because he’s not a big name and a late bloomer.

Would keep Chabot over Chychrun, sign one, personally.

That doesn't make him a top-4 D. He's playing with a very good defenseman.
I'm just saying there are better options out there.

Carrier I'm not sold on. Haven't watched him enough to have a solid assessment but from checking his advanced stats + factoring that be plays for an all around defensive team in Nashville, I'm not sold unless the price is in the 2's

I love Pesce but he's going to be the prized RD this summer and his contract will reflect that. Guessing money is going to be the priority after being on a sweet heart deal for so long.

Holy shit, I forgot Pesce was going to be UFA. I don't think the Canes move him unless its a significant upgrade, but he's a top pairing shut down guy that can anchor our top 4.

Hee's going to get paid $6-7 million and will be turning 30, but he's the one RD i'd be fine giving that kind of money long term. Roy would be cheaper, but if we can get Pesce, go for it.
