Steve’s only partners are his brothers. With the Melnyks getting 10%, I wonder if he’ll fit in Jeff York’s local consortium for another 10%.
wouldn't make sense not to. You still get controlling interest and now you have a bunch of local businesses that will want the sens to be succesful so more sponsorship and promotion.

I know Steve has a lot of cash but I can't help but question his dedication to hockey and the city.

This sort of feels like a back up plan because his efforts to land an NFL franchise failed. He maybe just wants to do a rich guy thing and own a sports team, preferably football but I guess hockey is ok too. That and maybe he's sort of breezing through the interview process by waving a checkbook around, when we have no idea just how liberal he'll be with it when it comes to this team.

That's the feeling I get anyway

That was my issue with him as well. Didn't he pretty much decide to bid like a day before the deadline? He was on the fence in the weeks leading up to it? Obviously he sees this as a real estate opportunity too.

He looks like a big sports fan, just in general. If you go back through his Twitter history, he's posting about basketball, baseball, hockey, golf, F1, horse racing, and so on. Oddly, there's actually very little football talk. He seems like a Raptors fan, above all. For hockey, I saw more about Vegas than I did the Leafs.

Kypreos just sounded like a consultant to maneuver the NHL landscape

I don’t think he’s actually part of Mr. A Teams bid

This. Mats Sundin is "advising" the Kimels, but I don't think anyone believes he'd be stepping into a full-time role if they land the team.

Kypreos has a sweet gig and life going in Toronto. From what I know about him, he's not giving that up to work for the Ottawa Senators.

He is bidding 1B for it. If he doesn’t care now he will when he owns them. Give me the check book baby 🔐

Gonna be nice seeing the Sens pulling off big boy moves with their roster

Get to run an NHL team that your buddy just bought? Sounds pretty sweet.

Melnyk claimed to be a passionate fan first and foremost and we saw how poorly that worked out with some of the worst ownership seen in the NHL, so who knows.

I'd hold back on that. The Apostolopolous family had an estimated net worth of $3B in 2021, when Steve A's dad was running the show. He passed away a couple of years ago, which is probably why the sons are all of a sudden interested in buying a sports pro team. Dad isn't there anymore and they control the money.

But while $3B is a lot, I don't think it'd place them in the upper echelons of NHL ownership. They'd be in the middle, with Aquilini (Vancouver) and Katz (Edmonton).

Kypreos currently works ~4 hours a day. He just built a massive house in Toronto and is a staple in the nightlife scene. Right now he can play 18 holes, do his show, and then be at the Raps game followed by drinks in Yorkville with the cast of eTalk.

Give that up to run a small-market NHL team that nobody outside of Ottawa really cares about? Which involves 10-12 hour days and significant travel?

I don't see it. I think he's a media guy and is happy to do that.

Because he didn't have a significant revenue source outside the Sens.

Anyways, I just have a feeling Andlauer gets it. Too much smoke over the last few weeks and he's already very well connected with Bettman and local groups. I think the bids will be close enough that those attributes will make up for the difference in price.

Why all the trepidation about Apostolopoulos? Just Kypreos? I feel like I'm missing out on some angst.
I think its that he wasn't successful with his NFL bid, and therefore owning a hockey team is like sloppy 2nds and he probably doesn't even like hockey. I think I read something like that.

To clarify, internet has the Greek Apostle's 2023 wealth as $3.9 billion.
And he bid 6 billion (USD) for the Washington Commanders.

I think people ready too much into someone like Andlauer's lesser net worth and assume he's going to run the team on a tight budget just because someone like Melnyk did, even though the scenarios are completely different.

In reality, I'm sure we'd be fine with any of Kimel, Andlauer, or Apostle.

I think it was Pittsburgh fans who woke up one day to the sudden news that their team was sold.

Lucky f***ers
