One line was interesting with respect to the 30 day windows. "an NHL official says it was not clear if the Remington group would commit to buying the team". That's just weird. Either Remington would say "we will pay 1b, but we want 30 days to negotiate" or they would say "no guarantees, but if all looks good at NCC and city, we will probably buy".

The point is, I don't see how it wouldn't be "clear". Don't you just ask for that guarantee?

can't wait for the full real story - which may turn out to be really boring.

"It’s believed Remington was looking for a 30-day negotiating window for a new rink and the sense among NHL officials was that it didn’t include a guarantee they’d purchase the Senators."

If this is accurate, I don't understand how Remington thought the seller would agree to that. Of course they wouldn't agree to that. They can't risk the possibility that Remington walks in 30 days and their other bidders have dropped away.

right, but it wouldn't be the "sense" that there was no guarantee, they would have been told. It's too early for the finished story at this point.

It seems pretty obvious to me that Remington/Reynolds are in the drivers seat and were the only really serious bid. They did all the legwork with the city, with the fans, with the arena, with the indigenous community, with local ownership groups. None of the other bids were as complete. Not even close. They are clearly the preferred option by Bettman and the NHL.

At this point, they just want to "get on with it" and drop the charade. But GSP and the Melnyks want to go through the whole process to let other bids drive up the price, but Remington/Reylonds are not buying it. They know they have extra leverage with the league, and they know their billion dollar package is good enough.

This is 100% a power move. Not a chance in hell they just walk away from all of this at the 11th hour just because of this.

Yeah, I don't think Bruce is saying that Remington gave the sellers the sense that there was no guarantee. It's the sense among Bruce's sources that the ask from Remington was exclusivity without a guarantee.

I know. Those sources would be NHL officials. How would then not know for sure? Like did they not think to ask "will you guarantee to buy".

All i'm saying, is that the story the way it is right now doesn't make sense. Kind of like if someone offers to buy my house, but they want to have an inspection.

If I tell you "know what, I totally didn't ask if they would guarantee the purchase after a successful inspection. Boy is my face red", you would be looking at me a little sideways.

But league sources doesn't necessarily mean sources who were part of the actual conversation. It could be someone in the league office who wasn't directly involved but whose "sense" of what went down is what's being described.

The Kimel group - featuring Desmarais - will finesse the Federal component of the deal (NCC land lease) and come out on top.

Bettman would've done so already if there was any inkling that the Remington Group would pull out.

Maybe, maybe not. It's not over until it's over. Remington know they have huuuge leverage because of potential league profits with Reynolds and a Wrexham style show. Bettman has to balance that with Melnyks wanting maximum money for the team. It's a 3 way negotiation.

Didn't Remmington already pull out of a bid to buy Arizona because they didn't like the land development oppurtunity? If they pull out of this the league will never give them another chance.

"As Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reports, the group looked to buy the Arizona Coyotes a few years ago but eventually pulled their interest. Part of the deal would have involved building an NHL arena in Markham, Ont., with the Remington Group contributing half of the money but the plan fell through after city council voted against using public funds towards the project.

“The league thought they were serious and then they backed away,” Friedman said on the Jeff Marek Show. “I remember at the time, people telling me, 'we don't know exactly what we're dealing with here,' in the sense that they sounded really serious, and then didn't do it.”
