I thought this was the year that we weren't supposed to care about the regular season? I see a lot of caring in this thread.

I think you misunderstood, we always care. What people are saying is that they won't be impressed if we kill it during the season unless it's followed up with playoff success. So in a sense, you could say that people don't care much about regular season success.

Of course before the not caring about success happens, the success has to happen so too early to talk about that anyway.

Everybody and their uncle in Leaf nation feels the same way, but when the team shows the same warts, fans will "panic" and start voicing their displeasure. Truth be told, they need to be given 20+ games in order for us to see what they are. At a minimum, let's wait until the unicorn is back and healthy.

What is ironic is that they sucked in game #1 last year vs Habs but came back to win in OT and then laid an egg next game in Ottawa. Also still need to see how they stack up against teams south of the border.

My God.

I'll give them a tiny pass as it's the first back to backs any of them have played in ages but that was awful.

Tavares and Marner in particular.

And that 3rd goal by mrazek was yikes.

At least Willy and Rasmus look great tho.
Hmmmmm I’m trying to figure out if this is sarcasm:)

Yeah, for sure. No need to panic and so on, the only thing that really bugs me at this point is Marner. The unicorn is out so if Marner the hero he's supposed to be, he should be stepping up and leading the way and instead, he's just useless. Only two games but still, very disappointing.

again I don't get why Marner gets so much hate, he's driven play the last two games. He didn't get the bounces, it happens. But this is very extreme. Marner has played well. He also ringed one off the post yesterday, same with JT or Sandin I believe off one of his passes so that could have easily been 2 points. He's creating offense.

I'm not doubting his effort, but at some point you got to start producing. And again I know it very early as we are only 2 games in, but we saw a similar pattern last year where he was getting a lot of chances, but was not capitalizing as much. All I'm saying is with Matthews out, you just wish to get a little more production from your other star centre and Marner. He's not getting paid $11 million to nearly score goals, he's getting paid to score goals.

as much as people want to say it's not a factor, puck luck is absolutely a factor. Of course you need to produce and adjust but they have been creating a ton of offense the past two games. Forsberg played out of his mind and the post helped him a ton.

Everything you just wrote would be an adequate excuse for a 4mil aav player. Not an 11 mil player.

Outrageous contracts come with outrageous expectations. If he wanted fair expectations, he should have signed a fair contract.

Sandin was the least of our problems last night. That Laurel and Hardy act pulled by Muzzin and Holl was disappointing. Muzzin will be better, Holl I am not sure.

Muzzin and Holl is basically a viable pair as long as Muzzin is at the top of his game. So I kind of keep close tabs on Muzzin for signs of wear and tear and decline. I'd hate to see the Leafs let Rielly walk just to realize they have a cratering Muzzin on the books so this is a critical year for him too.

Marner never has and never will be an elite goal scorer. The sooner you come to terms with that, the sooner you will sleep better at night. He is a playmaker. He has been doing exactly that, he creates chances. The guys on his line have to finish better. Tavares has got to bury his chances a bit more. What I do like is that Marner is shooting more. The goals for him will come, but people are acting like he's not putting in an honest effort. He is and he's making plays.

Someone shared this earlier, I don't know where this comes from but it looks pretty accurate based on what I saw, not just for Marner but for the others too. You think Marner played well? If you say so, I don't think he played well at all last night.

I would also have fair expectations for Marner if he signed a fair contract. But outrageous contracts come with outrageous expectations. It seems most of leaf land now agree with me. He did this to himself.

I don't understand any of these advance stats nonsense. I'm sure they will show he had some lapses and advance stats are useful, but I'm sorry I honestly don't understand what half of that means.

I think Mitch is trying to shot more and force it since he’s feeling a lot of pressure.

I think all the stuff he hears from social media is getting to the guy. He needs to just make all his accounts private and don’t let those comments get to him.

goooood for you man lol, but it's really nothing you should lose sleep over. He's probably still going to get 80+ points. Relative to the other contracts in the league and ones handed out even recently he's probably paid accordingly whether we like it or not. All I care about is what are he, Matthews, Nylander, Tavares, Rielly, Campbell going to do in the playoffs. Could care less about the regular season.

Fair enough, I don't care much for advanced stats either. I just had a peek since someone shared the link, I looked at the final game score and since it lined up with my eye test, I thought maybe it was pretty good. But yeah unless we know how some number is calculated I wouldn't expect anyone to rely on it.

It’s hard to read the advanced stats when some show they played good while others played bad.

I think advance stats has a place in the game but I think it’s more to do with the the lesser skilled players in your line up. Also more to do in situational parts of the game.

You know if your top players are playing good or not. I don’t think you need any advanced stats to tell you.

Willie and Spezza were great
Marner getting exposed bad
Campbell being a calming influence on the team

Rinse and repeat

It has a place in the game and I get that some Marner criticism is warranted, but's been relentless ever since the end of the playoffs and enough is kind of enough. He hasn't been a disaster so far to start the season. Of course we'd love him to score more, but he is creating offense and that's what the coaches and the organization wants. I'm not sure why we can't appreciate nice things in Toronto. It always has to be a Marner vs Nylander debate or trade Marner. I'm sorry but you don't trade a 80+ point getter for your team, you just don't.

So that's the standard then?

Fine. They better f***ing keep that same energy when a Leaf puts in goal like that.

Fairly sure they have already called back some goals (last year) for a lot less than what Tierney did.

Too rigid for me, don't agree with that at all. But I've covered that at length in the summer so let's just leave it at that. If Marner kills it in the playoffs, I'll be happy and if he doesn't ... never mind, I hope he does.
