But they're playing three defensive midfielders who are doing very little to prevent quick north-south slicing from their Spanish counterparts

And in a tourney where there have been few individual standouts, I don't see this as being a tournament where the MVP is necessarily on the Champion.

There have been individual standouts.
Defensive ones.

In a tournament where every single major team has been playing insanely conservatively, I honestly have a hard time picking out standout defenders. And there have definitely been none who have 'captured the imagination' or whatever is required to win these tournament awards.
