If you want understand a little more what @jj cale means and how significant hockey is to our psyche watch this.

It’s about an hour and a half but well for anyone fanatical about hockey and history.

NBC (American company) did a feature about the 1972 Summit Series. It’s the best account of it out there.

This is amazing stuff. I've seen this and other shows on it several times before but it still gives me chills to watch. It brings up feelings of intense pride (irrational) and shame (for the violence of it). But removing the nationalistic element it is still a fantastic story for the intensity and drama of it, both on and off the ice.

No, that is SO wrong, the summit series was a sporting event, not a war. It's stupid to compare the two. Absolutely stupid to compare them...
You don't get it.

It's part of our national psyche and pride every bit as much as the winter war is part of yours. We don't share the same history as you, we are not Finland and Finland is not us.

YOU may not think that they are comparable but for us it;s huge, who are YOU to tell us what is most important to us?

o.k......................i am ready for this game now.

Can you guys stop with all the mutual respect and start hating each other? The last few posts have made me feel like hockey is just a game, and not something worth clawing my eyes out or bathing in the blood of my enemies over. That just won't do.
If you think each side doesn't want to tear the other a new asshole tomorrow you are way off.

Finland is going to go all out on Canada, I hope they don't under estimate the fins.

Way too polite thread this is. **** Canada. Justin Bieber and Nickelback suck donkey ****. Gretzky was nothing without Kurri and Tikkanen. There I said it.

Never heard of them, that 4th liner selanne had a couple ok seasons before he washed out of the league though.. lol

It's actually interesting from a sociopsychological viewpoint how un-Canadian you are when you get to the rink and play hockey.

[That's a generic "you", not you, haha.]

I always think how funny it is wth hockey players in Canada. Even now theres lots of people ready to kill each other on the ice in beer leagues across Canada. Such a difference on and off the ice

Worry not. When the puck drops, the beast is unleashed in every proper Canadian.

Not a chance they underestimate anyone left in the tournament. After being dominated by Russia these kids know they have to show up and play their absolute best.

Yeah they gave that forgot the name of that Russian guy credits for it! But yeah the training back then seemed to be much thougher aswell :D!

But darn i like this 2 Canadian guys in the video the one scoring all the important goals and the Captain they seems like down to earth guys!

Phil Esposito and Paul Henderson is the other guy featured a lot.

Henderson scored the winner in the final moments.

Moments before puck drop, we’ll be doing our Canadian version of this:

Feeling insecure with this. Canada knows for sure Finland's system inside out already. Enough time for replaying videos and keep essays, and they have also US match reel to study. No way Canada couldn't take a lesson, and no way their coaching staff wouldn't underline the importance this is the game players shouldn't come in too easy.

Not that sure it goes that good in Finns' locker room, tho I must admit that Raipe has surprised me a little bit, just like guys as a team. Is there yet extra pages left in Raipe's playbook?

Good thing is that in the case of lost game, its Canada, and Finns are already accomplished at the minimum achievement level in this tournament. No reasons for national mourning, unless result is particularly ugly, in which I don't believe. Probably tight game. Good luck.

I think Canada will win this game.

Hofer has been pretty good in goal, star power has been clicking up front... and Canada knows Suomi can shut it down like vs. the USA so they will be on alert.

I'll say 4-2 for the good guys, with the Finns winning bronze.

Well, Canada is obviously the clear favourite, but we still can surprise - it would need fierce and high tempo team defence and a perfect night from the goalie, a totally possible feat. Still, Canada's high end talent might make the difference in the end. An exciting game coming!

Finns have nobody on the level of Hayton or Lafrenière.

That said, they play well as a team and they play a version of the trap. In one game tournaments anything can happen.

I’ll pick Canada to win in a low scoring game, but it really could go either way.

Watching Lafreniere and Hofer last game gives me confidence for Canada over the Fins. The way Hofer has played leads to me to believe he can win this game even if the players infront of him don't show up. Lafreniere is so dominant he will for sure generate a point in this game at least.

It was a nice trip down memory lane. That video should be required watching for hockey fans. That said, there's a game tomorrow. You Finns have grown too arrogant and need to be taught a lesson. Or we lose and you continue your improbable streak of success.

Should be good.

A thin line between arrogance and feeling and showing pride can be sometimes very blurred when it comes to Finns and their reactions. Hockey is the real national sport of Finland after all. Can't speak for everyone, but I think that there are widespread thinking pattern there, Finns have usually deeply ingrained traditional sense of uphill battle, and somehow it seems that when expectations are lowest, The Team has tendency to troll Finnish (and Foreign) audiences most. The systemic development of Finnish hockey program has been most progressive and very efficient in the world already some decade (relative to numbers and quantity of a talent pool), but still it's hard to believe we aren't living years after turn of the millenium anymore. For Finns it still feels that we are more successful than we should be, even whole system was intentionally overhauled from bottom to top. Pride and disbelieve are in entanglement in way that easily cause "arrogant" response when success against expectations happens. That said, I personally fear that Team Canada will really teach the lesson this time. Someone must make a prophylatic move against Finns' increasing hubris, and that role is naturally reserved for Canada...

Dear fellow Finns! Please kick some Canadian buttocks! Against the odds, and against the expectations. We feel proud of you. ;D

Kimi is a good one. Try him.

Anyway it's always great to play against Canada. This year we are lacking some top end talent but our goalie is awesome. Dictating pace with the puck will be the key. Canada has pretty mobile D so forechecking will not be as easy as it was with USA. Finland should really show some viivelähtös to Canadas forecheck.

Kimi who?

I'll simply say, if Canada has to lose I'd prefer it to be against a country like Finland that loves hockey. We're Finland against the US and Russia. A smaller country that outpunches its weight class by love of the game. You see that right?

Well, we seem to be exceptionally bloody minded people - the favourite sport of Finnish hockey fans is actually trashing the national team. The national team section in Finnish version of HF Boards is at times hilarious in its endless pessimism - and has to be seen to be believed. But then if we succeed we have a tendency to go over the top and there certainly are better winners than us in hockey fan circles... And if the defeat was narrow or somehow deemed "unjust", we can be bloody sore losers too.

I personally dislike this manic-depressive nature, but on the other hand with our history and geographical location, I think bloody mindedness was a clear survival trait :) And I love the way how our teams seem to thrive as underdogs and fight like crazy but with discipline and organization. In some ways we are a weird mixture of some typical Swedish and Russian traits. Swedish organization and Russian mood swings...

Exactly. We need a good dose of Canadian humility.
