it's quite funny how canadiens have some kind of obsession or fetish the declaire them favourites? pretty weird

Why not just wait after the game, because nobody know how this goes :)

Looking at the past says Finns are huge favoirtes here winning last 3 elimination games.

The only X factor will be what kind of cheap things baron Hayton etc Canadians will come up with after loss?

I'm not too eager to go to the most extreme interpretations in these things as it is still under question was there some earlier wave of Uralic-related language groups occupying the present day geographical area of Sounthern Finland before historic, now extinct Sami people (and their languages) got hegemony in the area before Finns achieving that after them. Paleo-Lakelandic languages may have been very well some entirely different, now forgotten group that spoke some unknown Paleo-European languages. There are heavy and clear traces for such language(s) in present day Sami languages, but also some hints in contemporary Finnish (and in other Baltic-Finnic languages and dialects). Areal extent of Finnic (Uralic) speaking tribes in Scandinavian peninsula is far from established, but they certainly have had Proto-Germanic and Proto-Baltic speaking tribes living in their immediate vicinity already several millenia ago. That is already effectively confirmed by linguistic, archaeological, and genetic facts.

Annunen needs near perfect game to Finns emerge victorious from this. ;)
That was more of a joke ;p It's a meme about finns and mongols. Interesting reading tho you presented there thanks for the update (historical nerd that i am)

Can you guys stop with all the mutual respect and start hating each other? The last few posts have made me feel like hockey is just a game, and not something worth clawing my eyes out or bathing in the blood of my enemies over. That just won't do.
Not yet. But when the puck is dropped..

I see. People look too much to Y-chromosome haplogroups these days, and even they can be dramatically misleading if taken as face value in simplistic manner.

Usually words that are not likely to get loaned from other languages are intimately related to family relations, 'Mother' for Finns is 'Äiti', which is ancient Germanic loan word. Native Uralic word for mother is 'Emä', traceable to the most ancient layers of constructable Uralic Proto-language.

People around the world simply do not call their mothers using a word that is unknown for their mothers and fathers. Simple as that, regardless of the haplogroup of your father. Language contacts between Finnic and Germanic must've been usually long, intimate, and generally peaceful for something like that to happen.

Finnish is expectionally conservative in its tendency to save ancient forms of loan words that are transformed almost unrecognisable in their languages of loaning origin. One of most often quoted example is Finnish word for 'king', kuningas. Originally Germanic loan from the form 'kuningaz'.

What time is it okay to get rude?

Figured the clock isn't much in Canada yet and they should at least get a few cups of coffee and hopefully a beer in their stomachs before I start raving and ranting.

Lundell will return to play tonight for IFK. He was only a couple weeks out of that he could've played in this tournament.

I told you at least 2 to 3 times that Lundell does not have enough time
for any rehabilitation of that elbow injury.

If he truly wants to play in these U20 WJC's because time was running out all the time.
But you were so freaking stubborn you didn't believe that and here we are now.
It sucks to be right.

You manage to be a hypocrite within the span of one post. Impressive.

And an asshole! :)

I would always like to be an underdog.

The pressure is always on the favourite.

With hockey though, it’s rare that anyone treats us as the underdog, whether it’s our own people or the opposition.

But hey, if you want to talk about how it would be a massive upset if Canada were to win, I’m happy to agree.

Finns can be happily underdogs, if you Canadians accept to be 'alikoirat'. :P

ADD: uh. More accurately 'alipenit', as 'peni' is the old Fenno-Ugric word for dog.

It’s actually quite funny how this thread turned into a linguistic and historical forum

Usually happens in Canada Finland threads lol. No real big rivalry games in the past plus the Finns play a style of game that I would say is closest to Canadians style of play. I know I cheer for Finland in non-Canada games 9 times out of 10.

Its quarter to 9 in the morning here in Ontario. I think most people are still feeling their beers from last night so be as rude as you want now lol.

PS Finnish death metal is the worst in Scandinavia and Raikkonen drives slow

Well, I think we have a Siberian stratum in our DNA which separates us from other Western nations, but that's not especially pronounced, something like 10%? (Haven't really paid much attention to genetic studies but I think this is the current thinking.) It is weird that we have mainly Eastern father lines and mainly Western mother lines when one would somehow think that it would be the other way round (but these Eastern ones are of European, not Siberian origins). In any case Finns certainly are different :)

Nothing drops paleolithic panties like Seima-Turbino bronze.

(Do note the continued affinity for bronze.)

You are not his doctor. You didn't tell me it, you just posted links from media which anyone can see. It wasn't your own opinion. I believe media links, but it is possible to recover earlier. You weren't right, media was.

I wasn't stubborn, I just hoped for the best. Annoying of you to blame me for "not believing" you.. you are not a doctor and you are not sure.

You don't get it.

It's part of our national psyche and pride every bit as much as the winter war is part of yours. We don't share the same history as you, we are not Finland and Finland is not us.

YOU may not think that they are comparable but for us it;s huge, who are YOU to tell us what is most important to us?

o.k......................i am ready for this game now.
I am Canadian,, the summit series was a game. No one died.
