IMO it all depends on how they finish the season. If their play continues like it has the last few weeks I think they clean house. A lot of it has to do with the new stadium. Pegula is going to want a winning season next year going to the opening of the new stadium. Season ticket holders are already having issues selling some tickets to the prime time games this season.
Who knows what Pegula wants with respect to the Bills because Terry has not talked to the media in years outside of the stadium groundbreaking stuff.

And I doubt Pegula cares much about how easy it is for STHs to sell tickets on the secondary market for ridiculous markups.

You could see how PSL sales are going be a factor. But, I think Beane & McD survive missing the playoffs once.

Ain't that the truth. We had to sell our $90 tickets to some friends for $60 for this week's game. They weren't selling online. Seems like the fans have given up on this season. I cant blame them. Ill probably be getting rid of my season tickets for next year.

I know Pegula doesn't take care about ticket holders having issues selling their tickets. If you are having issues selling tickets, I can't imagine how hard it's going to be to sell the PSLs for the new stadium.

I still think that McDermott should monitor the situation in Washington. Coaching matters a lot in the NFL - there's so much that goes into it. I remember seeing the Bills coaches with cots, pillows, and blankets in their offices. They put in a ton of hours to develop complex game plans - and what I experiences was during the 1994 season. Football has evolved and gotten more complex since then.

Imagine adding a DC like Rivera: he's coaches a bunch of different schemes and could incorporate some multiple front ideas into the defense. He's also been a HC so he knows that McDermott needs in a DC.

Bienemy is a west coast offense guy who would really change the way the Bills play on offense. He's also coached Mahomes, so he's experienced with a star QB.

That's where the Bills should look, or ideas like/similar to this one.
This would be a good backup situation. Not sure Rivera would be a DC at this point but Bienemy would interest me. Especially in the AFC. Although McDermott is the HC and picks the offensive ideals that he wants an OC to run.

I still rather get rid of McDermott. Great guy, did a good job but time to get a new voice. He's stale, lost the locker room, and we need an offensive HC.

Rivera and McD have worked together before. So, that is a scenario that seems like it could be a possibility if they clean house in Washington. I wouldn't count on it, but it wouldn't shock me.

I think the most likely DC would be someone already on the staff, though.

Eric Washington or John Butler

My guess is that McD hires a DC and goes back to being the CEO and they hire a veteran OC if Brady doesn't look great over the last 7 games and McD lives to coach another year here. Smiley might also get run out of town given how bad the STs have been this year.

It will be less reinvention and more about going back to being the CEO and trying to get a good DC/OC combo.

I agree with this, it's absolutely the most likely outcome.

I do worry about Brady showing a slight improvement and getting the benefit of the doubt from McDermott given that Brady is also a W&M guy.

We go let's say 4-3 and just miss the playoffs, I don't think that will be acceptable....but I don't think they torpedo everything over it.

Either way, I think McDermott will be forced to take on a D coordinator. He has shown he can't do both. The D has been well prepared....the offense and special teams have not. I would not be surprised if we take on a name offensive coordinator this summer who had been a head coach previously. Jason Garrett makes some sense, he has spoken glowingly about Josh Allen previously and got the best out of Prescott. And if things go south with McDermott they'd have a head coach in waiting already on staff.

Listening to McDermott, I feel their reasoning for moving on is solid. It is clear he felt there was a leadership issue with Dorsey that just wasn't going in the right direction. Ready to move forward.

I don’t see this Dorsey firing as McDermott’s scapegoating him to try and save his own job. If anything, it put McDermott on thr hot seat more because he doesn’t have Dorsey to scapegoat this offseason.

If this was just about trying to preserve his job, he’d have been better off riding with Dorsey as OC for the rest of the season and then moving on from him in the offseason. That would’ve almost guaranteed McDermott another season. Moving on from an OC mid-season is a big gamble that doesn’t usually work out too great.

I truly believe he felt this firing had to happen now, and that he did it to try and save this season. We will see how it works out…

And per the "would this have happened if" question:

If they had won the game, no I don't think it happens this week. You rarely see firings/changes after a win, even an ugly one.

BUT. Had the first field goal gone through and there was no 12 men penalty (meaning they still lost), yes I think he gets fired in the same way. I do not at all think the 12 men penalty was the impetus for the firing, given the special teams coach is still here.

And can we please stop amplifying the Diggs crap? He's never said he doesn't want to be here, and it has the potential to poison the atmosphere between the fanbase and him if it becomes "common knowledge" (without any evidence) that he wants out. Don't be our own worst enemy.

The idea we can't be competitive next year even with a tough cap situation and a rough 2023 is bunk. In this case, we'll get higher draft picks with more of a likelihood to get a new game breaker on a cheap contract, and play an easier schedule next year. Until proven otherwise, to me this is a one year blip (that, as pointed out has a lot to do with defensive injuries - holding up with spit and duct tape and just getting by is NOT the same as excelling, which the defense was early in the year) from a coaching staff that has earned the benefit of the doubt by going 47-17 over the last 4 years.

McD likely feels like he can't fire Smiley mid-season because he has picked up a lot of the game management duties that McD had to give up when he took over the defensive play calling this season.
