I would rather just ride out his contract than pay, i can totally see a team taking a chance with him this offseason though. 1 year for a proven player that's just had some recent struggles

Dude is last place on the team in +/- at -13 and has less ES points than every regular skater on the team, which includes elite offensive players like Lewis and Gudbranson. All while being paid 6.4M a year.

Truth be told, it's been more than three calendar years since he's been "good", and even at his peak he was a one dimensional 2C who was propped up by his linemates.

Nobody is trading for this player unless they get something in return. Still can't believe you thought he was worth a first round pick as recently as last season...

They will have to pay to move Money, Lucic though has very little real money left owed so they my be able to trade him for a late pick.

Monahan for JT Compher and a 3rd.

Kadri is gone this summer and Monahan would be a decent replacement.

Is Monahan just cooked? He hasn't been that productive this season.

The injuries have racked up, and he's been exposed.
He's never been a traditional centre in any sense. Not good carrying the puck, not particularly great on the defensive end, not a playmaker by any means, not a play-driver... When you play with Gaudreau, he makes up a lot of those holes. He has the puck a lot, he's one of the most creative players on the planet, he makes space even though he's like 5'7'' on a good day. Neither of them until recently were great defensively (Gaudreau might be one of the best 200 foot players in the NHL this year), so in Monahan's big year, he was actually the RW on his own line. Lindholm was taking centre coverage in the defensive zone, Gaudreau was providing the transition game, Lindholm and Gaudreau were playmaking on the offensive end, and Monahan was essentially a trigger.

This year it's everything together:
  1. The coach has found one of the best first lines in the NHL, which doesn't include Monahan. So he doesn't play with Johnny.
  2. Monahan has been asked to centre his own line and be the best player, which he hasn't done a good job with.
  3. He was still picking up PP points, but since has been moved off the top unit in favour of a more dynamic player in Toffoli.
  4. He's been everything from the second to fourth line centre, with multiple linemates and has literally found no chemistry with anyone.
  5. Sutter has put together a line of Lucic-Monahan-Toffoli which might be the most useless 5 on 5 line in all of hockey.

This X1000. The lack of footspeed on that line is staggering. If you could have 4 forwards on a line you could add in Tkachuk and it would be the slowest line in history.

It's pretty non-sensical as a line. 3 guys who a can drive a puck home, but have no real ability to set up other players.
