The injuries have racked up, and he's been exposed.
He's never been a traditional centre in any sense. Not good carrying the puck, not particularly great on the defensive end, not a playmaker by any means, not a play-driver... When you play with Gaudreau, he makes up a lot of those holes. He has the puck a lot, he's one of the most creative players on the planet, he makes space even though he's like 5'7'' on a good day. Neither of them until recently were great defensively (Gaudreau might be one of the best 200 foot players in the NHL this year), so in Monahan's big year, he was actually the RW on his own line. Lindholm was taking centre coverage in the defensive zone, Gaudreau was providing the transition game, Lindholm and Gaudreau were playmaking on the offensive end, and Monahan was essentially a trigger.
This year it's everything together:
- The coach has found one of the best first lines in the NHL, which doesn't include Monahan. So he doesn't play with Johnny.
- Monahan has been asked to centre his own line and be the best player, which he hasn't done a good job with.
- He was still picking up PP points, but since has been moved off the top unit in favour of a more dynamic player in Toffoli.
- He's been everything from the second to fourth line centre, with multiple linemates and has literally found no chemistry with anyone.
- Sutter has put together a line of Lucic-Monahan-Toffoli which might be the most useless 5 on 5 line in all of hockey.
