Sometimes it takes a trade to make a player wake up or sometimes it just means he gets more opportunity. Or it can be both but It's not shocking at when a still young player goes to another team and thrives when he didn't thrive with his original team. However much Kakko's production here became a disappointment he did come out of it with a solid foundation to work with. He is good away from the puck and that's an NHL job all over the league. If Puljujarvi had that he wouldn't be getting waived all the time.

I suppose we'll be moving Borgen some time in the next couple months and we'll have to see what we get back for him but as is right now I don't think we did very well on this trade and when journalists are telling us there were multiple teams very interested in getting him it does make me wonder whether Drury did get the best deal because it seems to me if it had to happen we could have done better.

But whatever---this season has been pretty much been the monkey f***ing the football.

Kakko was a useful player at an affordable price. I still don't understand this trade.

They can say it wasn't until they're blue in the face, this was absolutely pushed over the edge by his comments. Comments which were correct and needed to be said, btw.

Ultimately though, Kakko had plenty of chances here. He doesn't have the offensive skill to hang with guys in the top 6. He is what he is; a good third liner.

His game simply didn't translate to NHL ice.

Well it depends. Does @Shesterkybomb have a significant other and do they have to be there in the vicinity while he goes off the rails while watching the game. Then he might be a sadist...from a certain point of view.
That is true. Or if he likes making other people suffer through the game for his enjoyment.

I didn't think of all the variables.

I'm not sure what you're trying to say here. That the NHL isn't a development league?
he's trying to say that as a vocal proponent of the idea that any lack of success Kakko had while here was the fault of the player exclusively (and not the team), any success the player has on the new team is evidence that the player either A. was not trying hard enough on the Rangers, or B. required the trade to find the motivation to play better.

I think even if Kakko tops out as a 3rd liner he wouldn’t have wanted to sign a deal with the rangers to settle into that role. He wants to be more than that and a chance to do so, so I don’t think it was ever in the cards to just keep him in that role

Ah. I see. If you go back into the early Laf threads, I was saying the same thing. However, it took watching the organization since Laf's rookie years to see how we were utilizing our players. It's a stark contract on how other, younger players on other teams are handled.

Not saying KK was going to turn into Hughes, but kids get here and it seems like they're told to conform to the Ranger norms, vets get all the minutes no matter how shit they are, and the future of the team is relegated to bottom 6, no matter what their potential is.

I don't think young players like KK are trying to jeopardize their careers because they're not intentionally playing hard enough, but motivation to play better can indeed come from playing somewhere else with a system that fits you better and a coach willing to play you minutes (just like vets) despite struggles you're going to encounter being a young player.

That's the thing that people are missing. He probably would've signed another 1 year deal here with us and then bolted as fast as he could. The entire league knew he wasn't signing with us long term and we got what we could get.

If I'm pissed about anything regarding this situation it's that only we could have a 2nd overall pick turn into a 35 point forward by 23 years old. It's just typical Rangers shit.

It's happened a lot in recent years with top five picks not panning out.

Kakko just never fully gelled in New York. Maybe it was because the greater Metropolitan Area is just so much bigger than Turku, maybe it's his personality, maybe the veterans and him just weren't tight (he was good friends with Chytil).

We've all been to schools, jobs, programs, etc. where we just don't fit in or ever feel 100% comfortable. Not saying he's gonna be another Dave Gagner in Seattle (I still don't think he lasts very long there), but he'll find his niche in the NHL whether as a good 3rd liner, or a top six sidekick which didn't work out with Zibanejad and Kreider.

No shots on goal and missed the net in the shootout. That tracks. The extra 3 minutes didn’t help.

I wanted him to succeed so badly. I came to reality last year. He is too streaky to be what we wanted. Now the concern is if Laf is also too streaky to achieve his potential.

I was listening to the Nucks/Kraks and called the miss on the shootout. One of the few times KK didn’t disappoint.

Wife was like, “didn’t he used to play for you guys?”……

Yup. He just is what he is. The draft position makes it a disappointment. Otherwise, he’s a serviceable bottom 6 player.
