A lot of people make this argument that if you remove Kakko's 2oa draft pedigree we wouldn't be disappointed with the player he is. But if you remove Kakko's 2oa draft pedigree I don't think people would be so disappointed by this trade. A decent defenseman who can at least skate, a 3rd & 6th is not a terrible return for a guy who's broke 20pts twice in five seasons. Nobody would bat an eye at this trade had he not been taken 2nd overall.
3rd and 6th is trash. Should have at least gotten a 2nd

He's 87th percentile for speed metrics & literally has over twice as many speed bursts over 20mph than the average NHL defenseman. He's also big and physical, which fills a need created after the Trouba trade. He is great at zone exits. Fox may well be our only defenseman who is undoubtedly better than him lol

He has had a down year but he was pretty darn good not long ago

That’s great he used to be “decent”, but he sucks now so not sure how that helps us today and in the future. Guess he’ll fit right in with this defensive core though.

Borgen is fine as a 6D that you add in free agency. He’s a UFA this summer.

I’d have much preferred swapping Kakko for a similar age player also struggling. Greig, Novak, etc. I’d have rather added a 4th and 6th from our end, or something like that, to bring back a player with more unrealized upside. I think a trade like that probably was out there but Drury decided that he was targeting D and not adding anything, whereas I would have gone for best possible offer and been willing to attach a pick, or Otthman, or something to bring back a kid like Greig.

Borgen will be fine but the D still needs 2-3 more pieces and at least 1 or 2 need to be top 4 quality. Borgen is a bottom pairing guy we could have signed for free this summer. He can be a solid bottom pairing addition and stick around; I’m okay with that. Lots more upside for an actual full time role than Vaakanainen, IMO. Better than Jones, Lindgren, Mancini, etc. currently.

I just am so checked out on this team. Great, the trade is underwhelming but we all knew KK’s value was in the shitter and he talked his way to a faster trade (I liked him standing up for himself, but it is what it is). Can we PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF CHRISTMAS get a significant trade done? Trouba for Vaakanainen was the equivalent of future considerations. It was just get Trouba out of here. Kakko for Borgen is a bottom six forward for a bottom pair D. Can we please make a f***ing impact move of some sort? Please? If I have to keep watching the heartless bastards play pond hockey every night I will burst into flames at this point.

The way I see the D now is:

X - Fox
Miller - Schneider
X - Borgen

So we need at least a steady tip 4 quality D and, I would say an above average bottom pairing guy. Kreider’s turn to be moved for a blue liner. Tick tock.

No, he don't. Arguing without arguments is easy, yes?
What does Kakko do well?

He's Marcel Hossa with a higher draft pedigree.

He does not. But the 27 year old we just got sure does.
Again, what does he actually do well other than control the puck? Dude is an overdrafted Marcel Hossa. Lmfao.

3rd and 6th is trash. Should have at least gotten a 2nd
Why? How do you know a team was willing to offer a 2nd?

The Marcel Hossa comparison is a total f***ing joke my dude.

KK has hands for days, still offensive upside, more passing/playmaking than finishing, High hockey IQ, lacked confidence obviously (member JT Miller?).

There was a NHL.com fluff piece, players asked who is the best stickhandler on the team.

Adam Fox said Kaapo Kakko.

Trading Kakko and signing Marcel Hossa might be Drury's strategy at this point.

not true - the disappointment from the sunk cost of his draft capital is not real.

the upside from hos draft selection still exists.

Where are my Drury stans from the other nights post game thread?

Kakko wasn't even close to being what we though he would be, but cheap third liner that did more than this f***ing hall thats for sure, lol.

Get rid of this f***ing moron.

We paid more for Reily Smith lol
one is a middling second liner and one is a middling third liner. just because kakko is 23 doesn’t mean he’s magically more valuable. he’s been in the league for 5 years, we know what he is. smith is washed but his worst season recently is more in line with Kakko’s best season

Here
I mentioned this before, but it's very bold to assume his value would have stopped going down, let alone gone up.

Everyone has this crazy idea that he's going to be a big deal at the Four Nations. Finland is a much, much, much better team than the Rangers (can't believe that even needs to be said). He's barely going to play.

As I've said, there are arguments in his favor, but it's not an accident or some failure of the Rangers that he's been scratched by every coach. He couldn't point to the middle of the ice on a map. He's not going to make any fans with the coaches in this league. He's not going to last if he doesn't change, and it sure as hell wasn't happening here with a coach he's already clashing with.

The timing of this should have been much sooner, not later.
Sure, but that ship had sailed.

With the deal he had on the table, there was no reason not to wait. Im sure he couldve gotten more at the deadline for him at the very least.

Kakko being gone removes the pain that this franchise and its fanbase has felt over not getting a franchise player 2OA and seeing NJD get such a player a pick ahead. He needed a change of scenery to maybe salvage things. The franchise also needed to trade him. Now he has the opportunity to jump start his career a bit. We'll see if he can. Drury needed to do this sooner. I'd like to see Kaapo succeed (or find some semblance of success) in SEA. Maybe that's just me.

Based on what?

We might tell ourselves that he does one or two specific things well and that his 5v5 goal impacts are decent, but he's not making any fans around the league with his play. NHL front offices are going to perceive him as very soft.

He was just traded -- we know what his value was. Where do you think it was going from there?

I took today off.
I played a show in Brooklyn last night. Knew it would be late, knew I was getting banged up, was told about the trade last night at the bar right before we played and threw back two shots of whiskey… glad I had already taken today off.
Not sure how I feel about celebrating Will’s Borgday…
