Speaking of goal impacts, in the 111 minutes this year that Kakko has played without Cuylle, the Rangers have scored 1 goal and conceded 6.
getting absolutely carried to a 40 point pace by two players outplaying him by a country mile in chytil and cuylle

even with similar production a washed smith still looks far more dangerous than kakko

I like Kakko, not thrilled with the move.. but some people looking at Kakko like

The Marcel Hossa comparison is a total f***ing joke my dude.

KK has hands for days, still offensive upside, more passing/playmaking than finishing, High hockey IQ, lacked confidence obviously (member JT Miller?).

There was a NHL.com fluff piece, players asked who is the best stickhandler on the team.

Adam Fox said Kaapo Kakko.

This is all just gaslighting nonsense.

He has high hockey IQ? On what planet? The guy just skates into defenders all the time.

Somebody asked for Smith's player card yesterday and I'm surprised how good it was.

I know the cards aren't everything but just consider it for a moment. When Smith isn't on the ice with Zibanejad, the Rangers are an even 6 and 6 in goals, and their xGF% climbs from 34% to 46.5% (keep in mind the team is still pretty lousy in general).

I don't know, you guys, Reilly Smith might be good. He always was.

I know he's not visually impressive, but the impacts are there. He kind of actually is what people told themselves Kakko is, with the ability to do something skilled once in awhile.

smith has always been a guy who’s good as your 5th or 6th best top-6 player. solid complimentary skillset

I've never had a problem with him. He's had his moments for sure, including the other night, but in the grand scheme of problem/not problem, he's in the latter.

I like Smith but hes a UFA and doesnt fit the timeline. Him getting scratched was way more egregious than Kakko based on merit. The issue I've seen with Reilly in his bad moments are the flybys on defense. I guess his linemates are rubbing off on him. Can we get a 2nd from a contender for him with retention?

Based on what?

We might tell ourselves that he does one or two specific things well and that his 5v5 goal impacts are decent, but he's not making any fans around the league with his play. NHL front offices are going to perceive him as very soft.

He was just traded -- we know what his value was. Where do you think it was going from there?
I sure as hell dont know what the rush was to move him. To me there was no harm in waiting to see.

So.
I didn’t think Drury would trade KK (and was obviously dead f***ing wrong) because I didn’t think his value around the league would match the value of KK to this team (and maybe I was right about that). A 3rd, 6th and a player I’m honestly not familiar with… I guess I’ll give Borgen a chance. If he performs well, (he’s big, fast and physical? That sounds okay) and/or can be flipped at the deadline for a 2nd or a 3rd and a 5th? That’s not TERRIBLE value… On the other hand if he borgens the bed here… bad value. IMO of course, but as was pointed out to me yesterday I tended optimistic on what Kakko was going to be…

I still wish Kakko well. Decent kid in a bad fit.
