it was a response to the comment above, he was not our best dman on this team this year.

that shoulder injury really messed him up, hope he recovers well over the offseason cause he was a beast last year, and ok the seasons before.
The phase #1 or 2 D doesn’t have anything to with a subjective opinion on who is or is not playing the best on your team. It’s used to describe a role and ice time usage.

This is how hockey people describe these roles - for example… on buffalo, Jeff Skinner was our first line winger… But he was definitely not the best winger on the team by far. That was JJ peterka

So a teams ice time leader isn’t their no 1 or at worst no 2 D ….and I don’t know hockey. Just get out of here man with these baseless insults
Juiced by PP1 time.

EV TOI/GP in the playoffs:
Forsling: 19:58
Montour: 18:32

And who was trusted to take on the toughest matchups in every series? Forsling.

Skinner was 7th among BUF forwards in TOI/GP. 8th in EV TOI/GP. Is that first line level?

Thought with some of the other bumps to discuss summer contracts, this one was also worth it.

Despite some skepticism - and of course, with the caveat that applies to all long-term UFA deals that the backend won’t be as fun - I’d say Montour is more than earning his stripes.

Hat trick last outing versus Montreal but missing tonight versus the Leafs as Seattle comes unraveled is really driving home the point. With the star blueliner from the past couple of years, Vince Dunn, missing much of the season so far - Montour has been a stud. 4 goals, 9 points in 10 games with a +3 while racking up big #1 minutes. He affects both sides of the ice and is a big reason Seattle is looking frisky again (when he plays).

He’s really good when healthy, a true top pairing defenseman. We shall see how healthy he can remain for the duration of this deal but so far - this seems worth the risk for Seattle. Once Dunn gets back, there are some nice blueline options on the table for the Kraken.

Every night he looks like the best hockey player for the Kraken. He's easily the most noticeable player when he's on the ice. He's such a great skater. I don't watch many Panthers games, so I really had no idea how great of a skater this dude is. He's definitely been a massive improvement over Justin Schultz and definitely gives of great personal vibes as well. Cool dude.

He's the best rover I've seen play for the Panthers, and I mean that as a compliment

I feel like the Kraken was a good market for him. He wouldn't survive in a crazier media market. He goes cold and makes boneheaded decisions (he was really awful in the finals for example) which would pick him apart.

Overall though, his toolset and abilities are a great add. Being a RD is a bonus

Rather than tanking for 2-3 years and then ascending, Francis doomed them to like 3-4 years of mediocrity, and then a much longer tear down and rebuild.

Probably true. The Kraken are my 2nd favorite team, and I hated the Francis hire. The NHL sure likes to recycle GMs and coaches, and Francis is average at his job. Plus he absolutely sucks the life out of any room which is disappointing considering Seattle fans are amongst the best/most passionate in the world.

Unfortunately it's ownership that needs to remove Francis and since they hired him I think they are satisfied with him...And odds are even if they replaced him they'd do so with another (average) "recycled GM."

Just don't really see how the Kraken reach contender status from here, as they lack any elite talent coming up.

They're kinda set to hover around the playoff bubble line for a while, until their older core players fall off.

It's going to be tough for sure. We need Beniers and Wright to take the next step. Evans is already playing like a legit top-4 D-man and I don't think he has hit his peak yet. We do need a few players to hit their absolute ceilings from our prospect pool. If a couple of our prospects among Rehkopf, Firkus, Catton, Nyman, Sale, Price, etc. can turn into those elite players, we have a good chance.

I can see that happen with a couple of players above though I am not one for counting my chickens before they hatch. Time will tell.

Average at his job. Had one GM gig beforehand so recycled. Oh no, the Kraken didn't find a rookie GM that turned out to be a top 10 in the world. Maybe find a better list of things to justify your dislike of him.
