I liked Sandin but he's too small and too slow - good foresight by KD to trade him now and recoup a 1st. He could have been another Dermott, another season and he wouldn't have returned a 2nd rounder
I think Sandin's trade value should be greater than Dermott's based on the former being better offensively and a PP option (Dermott wasn't even a regular on the PK). Even though I'm not entirely convinced that Sandin's trade value would have decreased all that soon, I do agree that trading him now wasn't necessarily a bad idea either based on his trade value likely also not increasing with time.

Apparently -4 tonight- don't think I want the trade back.

He might be in over his head. Sounds like Washington is running him out there for huge minutes like the Leafs used to with their 80s first rounders… it’s an opportunity but also runs the risk of ruining a guy’s development.

I still think the Leafs sold high on Sandin.

He's not good enough at defence to carry them through the playoffs. If he were to play it could be a disaster, and if he were to sit nothing good would come of that either. Not only that, but his next contract negotiations would be high drama, and it was time to move on.

I think the Leafs got a fair return. Not a home run, but a solid hit.

Rasmus Sandin reminds me more of Gary Leeman than any other player. Skilled, slightly undersized left-shot defenceman. Leeman played defence until he came to the NHL, and then became a 51-goal scoring winger. I think that would work for Sandin too. Just not on the Leafs blue line.

He's not Joel Quenville or Randy Carlyle. I don't see any Norris Trophies in his future either.

So desperate to paint this trade as a win that we have to resort to this stuff? Morgan Rielly was -3 5 times and -2 10 times at the same age as Sandin. Rielly has been -3 on 3 different occasions and -2 5 times this season. And never with the type of insane minutes Washington is giving Sandin. And on much better teams than the 2022-23 Capitals.

Why cant it be more about attempting to accurately describe what Sandin currently is as a player?

There's like 40+ pages of "worst trade ever", "we traded away future #1D", "Dubas is a dummy".

Then he got off to a hot start points wise and the rage was in full force.

Talking about his defensive game or defensive shortcomings should be a huge discussion seeing as he's a defensemen and that was always the part of the game where the question marks were and not about his potential offensively.

He's a good offensive player that will put up tons of points with Washington but has always been questionable defensively but it seemed to get swept under the rug or some just defaulted to his advanced stats.

Or were people so desperate to paint the trade as a lose that they were using 3 games of him picking up points on the powerplay? I think it is all dumb but if you were one of those people belly moaning after he picked up points in a hot start you can't also all of a sudden sample size the bad games.

I’ve been loving how Jake McCabe has played, and he’s the one who put us in a spot where we couldn’t give Sandin a top 4 role.

Washington was in a spot where they could take the chance and had the spot open, and while Sandin has put up some points, he’s getting destroyed at even strength.

I hope it works out for Sandin, I’m cheering for him, would have much rathered kept him, but a Sandin trade request would have came in the summer anyway

Sandin's weaknesses are noted. Sandin's ill-fit for the Leafs' lineup after the McCabe acquisition and the Rielly extension. Sandin not being on the team for this playoffs or next season will have zero negative impact on the team as long as Rielly stays healthy. None of that means he's a bad asset or has a bad future in the league.

Nobody said he has a bad future in the league.
He's just not the superstar, Norris-caliber defenseman that many here represented him as after a 3 game streak where he wasn't even playing very well, but picked up a bunch of points.

Not even just 80’s first rounders. We did it with Schenn when he was only 18. Not saying he’s a bad player because he is serviceable for us but he could’ve been a lot better if we gradually developed him rather than throwing him to the wolves so young.

IMO its:

Jake McCabe
Erik Gustaffson
5th Rd Pick
5th Rd Pick

for:

Sandin
2nd Rd Pick

The value we got for McCabe is really unbelievable IMO. Crazy good trade.

Shouldn't Lafferty be added to our side of the ledger as well? As you point out, when you combine the assets moved in those two trades, it does kind of look like grand larceny.

He reminds me of Tobias Enstrom, who was a crafty offensive defenseman for a lot of years on Atlanta and Winnipeg, put up great numbers, but not a Norris caliber guy, with up and down seasons on the team success front.

Gus has played for six teams the last three years.

Six teams, but he was with the the Blackhawks twice in that stretch so seven really.

He begins the 2019-20 season with the Blackhawks, and is traded, February of 2020, to the Flames.

He then signs with the Flyers for the 2020-21 season and gets dealt to the Canadiens at the deadline. The Hawks re-sign him in the fall of 2021 then the Capitals sign him in the summer of 2022 and trade him February of 2023.

He should just live out of a suitcase.

OV also -4 last night, in less ice time - guess he'll never be considered a good player either.

He's not. Not anymore at least.

Go read up on what Washington fans are writing about him now. He does nothing but stand in the circle and take clappers to try to get the record. Any semblance of defense or team play that he's shown in the past are long gone.

I don't think Sandin would have dressed for the playoffs.

That probably made trading him for Bostons 1st attractive.

Seriously? You think my comment was intended to be anything but a joke?
