I still think the Leafs sold high on Sandin.
He's not good enough at defence to carry them through the playoffs. If he were to play it could be a disaster, and if he were to sit nothing good would come of that either. Not only that, but his next contract negotiations would be high drama, and it was time to move on.
I think the Leafs got a fair return. Not a home run, but a solid hit.
Rasmus Sandin reminds me more of Gary Leeman than any other player. Skilled, slightly undersized left-shot defenceman. Leeman played defence until he came to the NHL, and then became a 51-goal scoring winger. I think that would work for Sandin too. Just not on the Leafs blue line.
He's not Joel Quenville or Randy Carlyle. I don't see any Norris Trophies in his future either.
