Yep, you're right. I was thinking the cap was 81.5 again this year. I believe we'll have approximately 1.1 million in cap space with Murray activated and the current 12 and 9.
Yep.....IMO the Leafs are in a weird spot.....I don't think that even with 12 F and 9 D that they intend to trade away any of that D depth even though it would seem to be the obvious move. But having the cap space mitigates the F issue - they can add one post deadline.

I'm a little surprised by your reaction here, I thought the return was pretty darn good for a guy who probably was going to be the7/8.

Gustaffson gives the Leafs a dependable PPQB to back up Morgan and a guy who's better defensively than Sandin, plus the extra added bonus of 600k in cap savings(which tbh I didn't know about). I really saw this as a big win!

Bostons 1st
He isn’t better defensively though, he’s been sheltered big time. I bethe doesn’t even play much, could see him being moved, which is why I fail to see how this move in isolation makes us any better, it really doesn’t. I like what Dubas has done, I get Sandin wasn’t going to be happy, but a soft D man in return and a down the road maybe, I think the odds are it’s a bad trade in the end.

Sandin made a lot of mistakes this year and not just on the ice. The hold-out annoyed the mgmnt and the apparent reason for the hold out possibly annoyed his team-mates. For someone so high on his own worth just seems get hurt a little too often and so is unavailable just a little too much.

I'd heard that he tends to sulk a little too much or as it was put, the old "questions about his character!" statement. A team going into the playoffs or indeed just getting through a long grueling season doesn't need the whiff of negativity anywhere in the dressing room. Even a little whining can magnify small annoyances and create tensions that can throw people off their games.

Objectively Gustafsson is having a better season than Sandin, and he has been on teams who made a finals run (beat us with MTL). He's actually playing a decent D this season, and was not being sheltered as he was playing on the top pair for 20+ minutes per game once Carlson went down.

I can see both sides, but Sandin was going to be locked into the 6/7 Dman role for the rest of his RFA contract. He'd already asked for a trade before re-signing, and the McCabe trade blocked him out of the top-6.

So the trade nets the Leafs arguably a better player (similar at worst) now, plus a 1st (all while clearing $600K of cap space) for a player who was positionally blocked and had no clear role for the rest of his RFA contract (this season, and next).

From an outsiders perspective I think this is an amazing deal for Toronto. All the moves Dubas has made have shored up your teams glaring weaknesses. To me Toronto finally has what it takes to go all the way. Congrats guys. Sandin just isnt a playoff D man, too slow he gets eaten alive with a heavy forcheck. Leafs are getting Tampa, Boston, and either Carolina or NYR if they go on a run. These are the best forchecking teams in the league. I know you guys probably dont like me and wonder why im posting here but I wanted to give credit where credit is due and Dubas has had a masterful couple of weeks.

TSN trade tracker has the 1st going to WSH not us.

I understand. Led to by cap problems. Created by Dubie
This wasn’t a cap issue. It’s a pure numbers game. He wouldn’t be one of our 3 best LHD and he struggled too much on the right to play him there.
Going forward he will probably be a good player but we are in win now mode and without a regular spot for him in the lineup it was best to recoup assets for him before he publicly demands a trade and tanks his value.

There are zero cap problems. At least none that every other NHL team doesn't have to deal with.

This is a just a very lazy lie from someone from another board signing in under their alt-account.

Is it a given Erik Gustafsson will be flipped for a draft pick?
I don't think it's a given.

But what Gostisbehere got (3rd) at his full cap hit ($4.5 million) means that it's not out of the realm of possibility that Gustafsson ($800k) could return a 2nd or 2nd +.

Hate to trade him to another team in the East though.

Lol you don't know me friend, but the last thing I'd be doing is switching f***ing board accounts on HF... If I wanted to troll I'd do it from this account as I have many times in the past.

As for Sandin, I've been here rooting for this team for 30 years and know what I'm looking at, lazy eye or not (offensive, asshole...) This trade was forced because we can't pay him what he's worth when his contract is up for renewal. That is a cap issue.

That may be, but you are still mistaken saying this was forced by a cap issue. Sandin only makes $1.4 throufh next year - could easily have hung onto him until the summer, if they so chose. And when he needs to be re-signed, Brodie, Murray and Muzzin are all off the books, which opens up a ton of space.

I just don't get why else they would give him away. We developed the guy for 4-5 years, he was finally putting it together and playing. Why dump?? Strange decision
