We don't really know the situation but I'm sure Sandin has been wanting more of an opportunity in the top 4 and his contract hold out, potentially being an issue
On next contract too.
He might have wanted to be traded for a while

i like the move but honestly the masterstroke was probably to trade sandin and extras to washington for orlov and hathaway ..... we can dream but getting both mccabe, orlov, lath and hath in a double combo trade would have been insane.

Orlov is a stud but would almost certainly be a pure rental. If we were going to move Sandin, ideally it's for a piece that will be here beyond this year. Now, I guess it's the same thing with that first-round pick. Ideally, you only move it for a player with some term. Or keep it and move it at the draft, or draft a player depending on who's available. Either way.

The most obvious move ever after the McCabe acquisition. Knowing this happened now though I'm rather annoyed we didn't use Sandin as an asset to try to get us Meier. Sandin plus the ROR deal is basically as much as NJ offered.

Meier is a pending RFA with arb rights; we would have had to let him go by not qualifying him or let Nylander walk as UFA.

with ROR there may be a chance he re-signs cheap who knows...

Not as bad as I first thought, as I originally read it as Sandin going to Boston, which would be perfect for them.

I still don't think it's a good trade, but if he's going to Washington it's not going to hurt us as much.

I don't mind at all moving on from Rasmus Sandin. He's too small and too slow to do what the Leafs needed him to do. I won't miss watching him try to skate down a bigger, faster player that blows by him on the point and scores in overtime again.

I won't really miss his agent Lewis Gross either. I don't mind at all that those two are Washington's problem when his contract expires.

Has there been any press or comments from Gustafsson or the team regarding Gustafsson at all? It's weird because there was almost immediate commentary from ROR/Acciari and McCabe/Lafferty, along with Schenn and also Dubas and Keefe discussing them individually, but it feels like there's been no discussion at all about Gus. Perhaps there will be some tomorrow, but it just feels like this guy isn't gonna be sticking around.

You can be average size, or average skating, can’t be both. That will ultimately be Sandin’s demise. Great skill, great IQ, can’t be small and slow. Doesn’t work in todays game, or any iteration for that matter.

I really think the Leafs sold high on Sandin.

The playoffs would either further expose his lack of size, strength and footspeed, or they would diminish his value by having him sit in the pressbox.

He has flashes of really good play, but he's not a reliable defender.

I don't think his value goes up from here on in.

Have seen the packages some of these teams have been parting with? Jeannot got 5 draft picks and a former first round pick.
You’re comparing a player with term and a cheap cap hit with pending UFA’s

Kerfoot is not Jeannot. And we saw Engvalls value today

Couldn’t agree with you more. Could you have gotten more? Maybe, but the clock was ticking. They essentially recouped the same draft value, kicked the can down the road, and didn’t take anything away from the team. Gust can replace the offence today, or you rotate him with Schenn and add a different element. Win win.

Not a big fan of losing Sandin, we need cheap young guys and he has great potential. With that being said Sandin could have requested a trade for all we know. We will wait and see what Dubas does with the assets he got back, but this one is a bit puzzling for the time being.

Rasmus Sandin won't age well in the press box, and during the playoffs his play won't show well on the ice.

You really need to skate well to succeed in the NHL, and more than that you really, really need to skate well if you're a 5'11" 183 pound defenceman. Sandin just doesn't have the basic tools, and doesn't measure up.

He's a cheap, young guy now, but in a little over one year his agent Lewis Gross will try to change that. If you like dramatic, protracted contract negotiatons then you will love Lewis Gross. I won't miss that action at all.

1st, Knies, Liljegren, Minten, any other 1sts we have lying around and Niemela for Chychrun.

This level of mortgaging the future takes me back to the days of Boyle for a 2nd.
The Boyle pick turned into Alexander Volkov
And for those keeping track the Plekanic trade became Jacob Olofsson.

The fact Kyle traded a defensively liable, small, slow , injury prone bottom pairing d-man at all was a coup. Then he gets Boston's 1st, does he stop there... nooo he gets a d-man who can QB the 2nd unit PP and play sheltered minutes on the 3rd pair.

The fact Sandin is gone makes my heart happy.

Exactly

Sandin was 6th D leafs .Hes okay defensivly against a weaker opposition but for a top 4 role, hes not better than rielly.

Rielly, mccabe, brodie, liljegren, gio ( next season), brodie is ufa but if he leave leafs will need to replace him by someone who can bring what brodie bring to leafs... and its not sandin. and would not be higher than a 3rd pair dman next 3 year for sure

remove the name, im telling you you will get a 1st for a 3rd pair of next 3 -4year at least who would play around 15-16 in a limited role... dont tell me you will say its bad for the team.

Basically a challenge trade for the team.
Beat Boston and the team gets an upgraded first.

Dubas has made some great moves, I’ve applauded his work, this one is easily my least favourite.
On the surface I was highly disappointed. When it said Sandin to Washington I 150% thought Jensen was coming to us, which I was heartily cheering for. I wanted him badly, and was disappointed he wasn’t coming.

Looking at it now, McCabe is an upgrade on Sandin, who would have drawn in for injuries, as he is not good on RHD.

I am glad to have a 1st back and still have a feeling Gus and/or the 1st can still be dealt by Friday, so there may still be more to this.

Ultimately as much as I liked Sandin, I think we improved here and added some much needed draft picks back.
