Leafs fans, is Sandin as good as his fancy stats say he is? Gustafsson has stepped up and been a very solid offensively inclined player this year on a team that was running a pretty bare bones defense from day 1.

He was always pretty good on the bottom pairing. He has struggled moving up the lineup and has had some injuries start to pile up.

His skating will probably always be an issue to move up to play tough minutes. He's not fast and doesn't absorb well defensively. He's pretty good, he has very good vision and zone exits, just don't expect a star.

Who had “Sandin returns more than Patrick Kane at 75%” on their offseason bingo card?
I'm not that surprised to be honest. Sandin doesn't have a 10.5M cap hit at 34 yrs old. Plus Kane pretty much handcuffed the hawks by only wanting to go to one team. I still thought he would've gotten a 1st though

i dont get this trade. i dont think it was necessary because the schenn deal is unecessary.
Schenn is mediocre and wont be playing with our new top 6 , so if your going to sit out schenn or sandin anyways might as well keep the younger guy you have signed for 2 more years at basement bargain prices.

I agree about the Schenn trade but I think Sandin was on his way out. He's had trouble staying healthy, there was the whole contract thing, and he has not outplayed his competition on the blueline. At least not by any tangible amount.

I don't think getting a first back plus a player is awful. I definitely would have liked a little more but I suspect he just doesn't have more value than that. I wonder if they thought it was going to be an issue for him potentially being in the press box for the rest of the season, that it might have become an issue internally.

Erik Gustafsson • D

Status : On roster
Ht/Wt : 6'0", 197 lbs.
Born : Mar 14, 1992 (30 yrs) in Nynashamn, SWE
Experience : 6 years
Drafted : Drafted by Edmonton in 2012 (4/93).
Acquired : Acquired as a free agent in 2022.
Shoots : L

SCOUTING REPORT
Has no problem with the offensive part of being a defenseman: he moves the puck well and can quarterback a power play. However, his play in the defensive zone has never matched his abilities with the puck and he is not a physical player, either. Can be productive in sheltered minutes and when paired with a defensive-minded partner.
Long Range Potential : Offense-first depth defenseman.

Sandin has potential for sure

But he already tried holding out on his first contract before proving anything. Good for Dubas for getting out while he still had value. Defense definitely looks like a different heavier mix now

I understand, but I am just going to point out that the Leafs got Sandin with a pick in that very range.
I am aware of that. But Rasmus' selection was a hit. We are not guaranteed to get that level of player again at that point in the draft again. We could get stuck with a Biggs, or a Gaulthier. That said, I have a ton of faith in our drafting.

At the end of the day we traded:

To Toronto: Luke Schenn, Erik Gustafson, 1st round Pick
Leaving: Rasmus Sandin, Pierre Engvall.

It's a win IMO

Sandin will do well, Keefe is not his coach.
But he could not stand the pounding in playoffs, and skating will never improve. Quality guy me thinks.
We got a more mature version plus 1st.

He has potential to be a key player on any team. High ceiling imo. Just needs the right coach and the right partner. He can skate his ass off, and will lay a huge hit sometimes out of the blue. You're getting a good player. Dont expect the world

I really hate this trade. Just.. I don't get it at all unless Sandin asked for a trade. Why are we keeping Holl over Sandin?
Because everyone knows Holl is a POS but thinks (key word thinks) Sandin might have future upside. Have to trade something to get something.

I get it. Honestly was wondering after the McCabe trade where Sandin fits in, as we have a primarily offensive D in Reilly locked up for term. It's a shame, but he has struggled with the speed and forechecking of the playoffs in the past.

I hope this doesn't come back to bite us though. Honestly dunno what to do with Gustaffsen. I would flip him for picks to be honest, if we could get a 2nd or something for him.

Good player with some room to grow; wish him the best. It’s a good opportunity for him.

I wonder what happens with Gustaffson now? My bold prediction is that he gets sent out west for more draft capital by the deadline….if any of the west teams actually wake up and add.

I understand it, but I’m not happy about it. I don’t like the idea of trading young productive D.
That's Dubas' first GM pick out the door, right? A trade down that was meant to herald in the new analytics regime.

Don't much like losing him either but the return could have been worse, I suppose.

I'm torn on this. Always tough to see a long term prospect go. On the other hand i don't think his upside is higher than a 4th D and thats if things go right. Good to trade him with his value being high.

Why acquiring Gustafsson will reflect poor for Maple Leafs | Kyper and Bourne

Nick Kypreos and Justin Bourne discuss the Maple Leafs trade that sent Rasmus Sandin to the Washington Capitals for Erik Gustafsson, and why it could be a mistake in long-term.

Sandin not the player we needed against Tampa and Boston. Probably wouldn't have been happy sitting out again so I think this was a smart trade. We've got another one in the chamber now to upgrade Holl/Kerfoot

I don’t think the hold out did anything to management. I think they’ve honoured Sandin’s request and it’s also a no brainer, you’re getting a first rounder for Sandin who on their roster was a 3rd pairing dman. (Yes I believe he’s a top 4 dman) but on the leafs he’s never going to be a top 4 guy.

Sandin’s hold out was justified, he’s felt slighted by the organization. They continually filled up the left side lol. He had a right to be upset. Sad to see Sandin go but this will be a great move for his career.
Or he'll be exposed because Leafs' fans always over rate their players.

I like Sandin, but I also think he's been overrated by a segment of our fan base. His size and mobility were always going to be a hindrance when it matters most - in the playoffs. I think the return would have only gotten worse over time had Dubas not pulled the trigger

Gustafsson is having a great year and the first round pick is a significant asset. I think Dubas did alright here.

Either is Gustafsson really, if that’s how we view it.

I think Sandin wasn’t going to take sitting well, that’s the key to understanding this move, or the only way I’m making sense of it.
