Well, I'm certainly conflicted here.

On the one hand, I think Sandin has a fairly bright future in the league. He's a good player with the potential to get better, but I also do not think that he has the glittering future that some people expected of him. He's got some decent offensive talent and can play the game, but he's not strong defensively and isn't exactly dynamic offensively. He could carve out a career as a 2nd pairing offensive threat, but that's not the kind of player that we want to invest in and I'm not surprised to see us move on. Even though he looked good at times this year, he never quite played well enough to force his way into our long term plans.

Getting a late first is alright and I have no idea how much value Gustaffson has, but I am certainly pleased that he's got nearly twice as many points as Sandin. He'll give us a left side offensive defender that we can stash in the pressbox, though I wonder where he'll fit with Timmins filling a similar role.

Our D is DEEP

Rielly - Brodie
Gio - Liljegren
McCabe - Holl/Schenn
Gustaffson - Timmins

I already tell it, a futur with both of rielly and sandin in the same team was not great

Rielly already playing exactly in the only spot sandin can play in a team, hes an offensive dman with too much issues defensivly so he need to play as much possible of offensive situation to grow up... something it would be impossible in Toronto and its the reaso why hes pratically at the same level since hes in toronro. He cant develop his strenght

My gut reaction is that I don't like it. Giordano can't have many more miles left on him and Sandin showed real promise.

On the other hand, I sort of understand why this trade was made, and I'm not sure I can judge it in isolation of whatever Dubas decides to do with that first round pick.

It's a bit too early, but I'm sad to see the player go. Cost controlled young d with upside.

Gonna miss Sandman!

He was a shining light for a D corp that wasn't developing D prospects to become top 4/bottom 6 as quickly as needed.

Truly have to wonder how this will do for the psyche for Willy, Lily, to have him a close friend to both gone. Engvall too is a pretty sad loss too for the swedes on the team, apparently a big swede fave.

I just hope this all pays off or this will all look extremely sort sighted.

I like Sandin a lot. I also see him not getting much ice time in the near future. We do need to get some picks back. I'm reluctantly okay with this trade.

I'm worried for this one and Engvall, as the Swede connection was strong on the team. I know many are overblowing the chemistry angle, but I think this is a legit concern. Nylander is looking good and needs to stay rolling.

I've certainly got some chemistry concerns, considering that we have added six and subtracted two. We shall see how it goes though, they're professionals.

Leafs fans, is Sandin as good as his fancy stats say he is? Gustafsson has stepped up and been a very solid offensively inclined player this year on a team that was running a pretty bare bones defense from day 1.

It sucks to see Sandin go, but our defense is so deep, he likely wouldn't have made the opening roster for game 1. I'm not sure how that would have sat with him, and what that meant for his future here, especially after difficult negotiations last offseason.

We got most of Sandin's cheap years, and it's kind of exchanging Sandin for the seed that grew into Sandin (late 1st) in a deep draft to try and redo this on a later timeline; getting back some of the future with some now that we didn't actually need right now.

Makes sense, but still sad.

No complaints about this move. Move makes sense for both teams. Glad to get a first round pick back along with Gustaffson for Sandin. Sandin was now pushed further down the depth chart after the acquisition of Jake McCabe. Wish him well with the Capitals.

Not sure I love the return here tbh. Sandin probably sits this playoffs, but long term, that’s not a great return. Gus is 6/7 here, does produce, but not an upgrade imo and the first is super late, doubt it amounts to a Sandin. I think we pulled the plug too early on this guy, but he was uneven this season.

Meh move here.

He was playing weaker opposition amount all leafs regular, so no for the stats. He is a good offensive d with some defensive struggle... the problem with toronro its rielly was already in that spot playing similar way

But he would certainly grow up as a pp QB and bring some offensive, its a good kid

Yes he is. He's very good offensively his skating needs work and he needs more playtime which he will likely get with you guys versus us.

Not sure how to feel about this deal TBH. Part of me is waiting for the subsequent shoe to drop with that newly acquired 1st round pick, but the other part of me is just thinking Dubas is just cashing in on a player who would have soon become a diminishing asset. With the newly acquired McCabe set to take his ice time, and the very high likelihood of Rasmus spending significant time in the press box, you gotta wonder if that would impact his value going forward. Not to mention, this was always an issue for Rasmus since the summer.

That said, I reallly realllllly don't like giving up good young players like Rasmus. Certainly not for a rental like Gustafson who ultimately will be in the same boat that Sandin was likely. Sure it's nice to get that 1st round pick, but given where wit will be, we are very unlikely to get a player of Rasmus' pedigree at that position.

I really don't know what to think of this one TBH. I guess I will just have to assess this at the end of the week. If there is a subsequent deal to come involving that 1st rounder, I think I can get on board with it. Depending on that return obviously.

This deal just seems very odd to me. Especially coming from a guy like Kyle.

time will tell
I understand, but I am just going to point out that the Leafs got Sandin with a pick in that very range.

This is a good trade. Recouping a first for a player who's stalled in his development and wasn't even in our top 6 after yesterday is a fine bit of work by Dubas. Either keeping it or using to upgrading the team further are fine options.
I'd like to see an upgrade in goal but I'm not sure if there's any realistic options out there.

Good offensive instincts and will look good on the powerplay. Decent vision and is pretty good at getting the puck out of the zone with an outlet pass. Not tough, but I wouldn't call him soft either. The biggest knock on him is his skating, particularly because when he makes a risky pinch or play at the blueline, he struggles to get back and recover. His upside is probably a #3 or #4.

i dont get this trade. i dont think it was necessary because the schenn deal is unecessary.
Schenn is mediocre and wont be playing with our new top 6 , so if your going to sit out schenn or sandin anyways might as well keep the younger guy you have signed for 2 more years at basement bargain prices.
