Makes sense if McCabe is staying at LD.

I think this either says the Leafs really like Koster/Kokkonen/Kral long term (there is a good bet that at least one could fill Sandin's current role in the near future) or they have their eyes on Hardy Haman Aktell or Valterri Pulli in the Euro UFA market... If they are looking at young talent at all.

Gio has another year, and after that, assuming McCabe can be a solid caliber 2nd pairing LD for the next 2.5 years, we will probably just look externally for someone who can fill Gio's role once he retires.

Sandin was good. Definitely could have been a part of the future. But it was going to be tough to get minutes in for him both in the near and reasonably long term. I am just surprised we did something that bold.

I also do not know why people assume we are trading that pick... At least right now. Not that we can't live without it, but there are going to be some solid prospects available in the late 1st round this year. That should preclude us from making a move, but I am not seeing one right now where it makes sense to move it. Seems like a move to give Sandin a shot elsewhere, maximize his value, and get a solid depth defenseman who can fill Sandin's role to a tee if needed.

Still need to open up a bit of cap space, but now we can afford to retain on Kerfoot or Engvall to maximize their value.

Bullshit. Absolutely hate this. God forbid you move Kerfoot. God forbid you move Engvall. God forbid you not only don't move Holl, but you take him out of a top four role.
Dubas is making moves left and right and you think he’s done? There could be two or three more trades coming. Wait until the dust settles to freak out.

I don’t know, I liked Sandin. I think for the future more than now, as I think Sandin was a good puck mover, gritty guy for his size, I won’t miss his flubbed passes and slow recovery on bad pinches though, and if those happened during key moments in Playoffs I think we all have had enough of that.

Would have moved Kerfoot or Engvall and kept him for Depth on D, but not sure Kerfoot et al would return a first or warm body you could use.

I see no value in this deal unless the pick is moved.

Giordano is old as dirt, and Gustafsson is UFA.

Sandin was going to be the #7 this year, and he and Timmins were fighting for #6 next year. This is a move that I think was needed and the return is fair both ways.

He's on the right team to shoot like that

Surprised we did something that bold too.

Another great trade by Dubie .. saves $600,000 per on CAP .. gets us a late 1st round pick in a great draft for a D who can't skate and is small .. Sandin was never gonna replace Rielly and therefore there was no spot for him going forward .. also adds a depth defender for playoff run

Long term it hurts to lose Sandin, but he just gets out worked on the boards and in front of the net during physical games, Needed trade to allow for cap space now.

Gus has been a lock as a really solid top 4 guy this season.

He's played the most 5v5 minutes for the Caps and instantly becomes our top scoring Dman, all for 800k caphit.

Oh, and for those who care, he's a + 11 5v5 on a team that has a -6 overall 5v5.

No one really talking about him though?

We saved on the cap, got a 1st and got the current better player. Sounds like good contender business no?
