Not sure how to feel about this deal TBH. Part of me is waiting for the subsequent shoe to drop with that newly acquired 1st round pick, but the other part of me is just thinking Dubas is just cashing in on a player who would have soon become a diminishing asset. With the newly acquired McCabe set to take his ice time, and the very high likelihood of Rasmus spending significant time in the press box, you gotta wonder if that would impact his value going forward. Not to mention, this was always an issue for Rasmus since the summer.

That said, I reallly realllllly don't like giving up good young players like Rasmus. Certainly not for a rental like Gustafson who ultimately will be in the same boat that Sandin was likely. Sure it's nice to get that 1st round pick, but given where wit will be, we are very unlikely to get a player of Rasmus' pedigree at that position.

I really don't know what to think of this one TBH. I guess I will just have to assess this at the end of the week. If there is a subsequent deal to come involving that 1st rounder, I think I can get on board with it. Depending on that return obviously.

This deal just seems very odd to me. Especially coming from a guy like Kyle.

time will tell

So what do the d pairs look like now?

Rielly-Brodie
McCabe-Liljegren
Gustafsson-Holl

Holl and Liljegren will probably be switched though.
Gio will be in there. Gustafsson will probably be moved. Hearing they may be going for a goalie. If so, Murray may be involved (with retention).

Honestly-

Thought he'd be gone to get McCabe at 50%- so we're well ahead there
Rielly-McCabe blocks him up the left side the next three years
He probably doesn't slot in to the healthy playoff d-corps for this season and playoffs

Hard to argue with.

That being said, he's a young high upside dman, this might not look as good in 3 years as it does today.

You could easily move Kerfoot or Holl to make cap room.
You can't say Kerfoot, Holl,, Engvall are dogshit and then expect a team to trade for them.

If the evaluations are correct on this board, what GM is taking anyone of those 3? Not a contender because all 3 are" soft and trash".

Not a tank team because thwy don't need UFA'S.

Sandin wasn't playing with the acquisition of McCabe.

Wonder if Vancouver would move Mikheyev (who is currently injured) back to us in a larger package.

Demko
Mikheyev
Schenn

for

BOS 1st
TOR 3rd
Kerfoot
Holl
Woll
B Prospect
No interest in Mikheyev, and I'd love to see Woll backing up the new goalie next year.

But I'd happily put together a package like that for Schenn and Demko

Fair enough. Timmins had much less NHL body of work, and more injury concern. I don't follow or watch advanced stats, so I can't answer your original question.

I guess I'm not a fan of trading an NHL body for a single pick that might only have a 20% chance of being an NHL body. And as noted before, I don't know much about Gustafsson, so maybe he makes up the difference.
38 points in 61 games this season, plays 20 mins a night runs their PP D numbers better than Rasmus and gets paid 800k

Gustafsson should only ever play if Rielly is out, if he's not getting almost only offensive zone starts & PP time, he's a useless liability.

That being said, if Rielly were to go down, he can really take on the offense that's needed.

Don't hate this trade but I don't like it.

I've made no secret about not loving Sandin but if Dubas doesn't use that pick on something to help this spring i'd have preferred we kept him for depth.
Fairly confident we're not done yet though.

Hope we flip Gustafsson if we can get a 3rd+, not sure how he fits into the playoff roster.

Wouldn't mind holding the 1st for later down the line or someone with some term now.

It will probably suck in a few years, but that's routinely how it goes for teams that want to pay to try and play with the big boys. Just have to hope good trades for futures are made with some of the big guns when the time comes.
