We gonna find out how good/soft this team is next week in the home and home with the Habs. Dubas better hope they can out skill them because the Habs are just as fast as the Leafs. Lose both games and the pitch forks will be out for Kid Kyle. Split or win both and the pitch forks stay put.

The Habs will be the team to beat in the all-Canadian division. Can't see any outstanding weaknesses.

I expect 2 very close games vs Habs and they will fight it out all year for 1st place ... it is playoffs where I worry more ... refs throw da stupid battle infractions out and it is real man hockey

Ray Ferraro on Overdrive just spent 5 mins talking about Bennett. They said hes a top 9 winger. Not a center.

So does he make sense over Nylander, Marner, Hyman, Mikheyev, Simmonds, Thornton at $2.55M with a contract that is up at the end of the season in which he is looking for a raise?

Didn't overpay Holl, Kapanen, Johansson, Kerfoot, Nylander, Matthews, Bogo, Brodie, Muzzin..

Were you joking?

Kappa and Johnson gone cause they needed the cap room, Bogo/Thornton/Simmons are pretty much league minimum signings. Holl was a good signing so far. Already rumours of Kerfoot/ Dermott being shopped so I guess he deserves credit for being a effective sign and trade GM?

Yep, he gets tons of credit for only signing deals that will maintain value when they need to be traded, unlike most GMs who are stuck with all their untradeable depth contracts.

That's exactly right. He only signs good contracts, zero bad contracts. One of the only GMs in the league that manages this seemingly obvious strategy.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe he's only played centre in a meaningful amount in one season (2016-2017). He's a natural centre in the same way most top prospect forwards play centre while they're in Junior.

I dont think hes played centre consistently since he was a teenager. At this point safe bet is he's a winger for the rest if his pro career

Hes also not exactly a spring chicken either. Hes basically very close to being as good as he will ever be at the NHL level

Taylor Hall at the deadline. That's the move.

Tough to turn that down if it's on the table and reasonable enough. Quite possibly a move that is easier to pull off with the teams not being divisional rivals for this season too. While not good, Buffalo not being a playoff team would be one thing. Buffalo being a seller at the trade deadline though...Still, it could happen.

I think folks in general spend too much time equating cost of depth with quality of depth the fact that a guy costs less doesn't mean he's a lesser player- especially when part of this front offices philosophy is seemingly trying to uncover undervalued assets. All that matters is how they perform on the ice, not their contract aav

How would they even fit that in the cap?

Trade Engvall and probably a first, for Hall 50% retained. We'd need $610,830 cap room.... It's an all in move for sure....

I wouldn't be opposed to it but if we're going to go for it, I'd want an upgrade at third line centre as our priority

If you want a defensive guy, Soderberg will be available. If you want an offensive guy, Brassard will be available. We'd probably be able to fit both in, as they are both at $1 mil, and UFA's after this year... probably would be cheap. Trade Petan + mid/late round pick for one of these guys at 50%, and we actually gain cap space.

Neither are upgrades on Kerfoot so not sure how that would help us.

Its just so much easier to fill bottom roster spots with kids and ufa than top roster spots.

Not easy for any GM to find elite talent for cheap.

But the mark of a good GM is exactly the ability to find good depth pieces for cheap.

Not overall... no, but Soderberg is better defensively, provides some size. Brassard has some size, physicality too, and offensively has been decent... the thing is, you could add them both, without subtracting Kerfoot... so it doesn't need to be a replacement situation. It just gives you other options. An actual upgrade on Kerfoot, instead of a top six winger... I haven't really looked into that at this point.

But, if you really want to make a splash.... Kerfoot, Engvall, 1st for Hall and Staal at 50% both... It would actually reduce our cap.

Kerfoot is better defensively than either of those guys.

Mikheyev is the better player, but he has 2pts in his last 15GP including the play-ins where he was a complete non-factor post-injury. Hardly a lock on any line.

Bennett would/should play ahead of Simmonds and Thornton, so he'd ideally be your #2/#3LW. That would allow you to rotate him and Mikheyev instead of being forced to ice Vesey/Simmonds/Thornton as your other top six winger. I don't see how he would be "looking for a raise" considering he's an RFA with his production being in decline since his last contract at 2.5M. You'd be hoping he can find some offensive confidence with the big four, otherwise he's an energy piece for the 3rd line.

Engvall loses waiver exemption soon, costs the team additional cap and will undoubtedly be exposed in the expansion draft. If you can swing Engvall + for Bennett with retention, then it makes sense, as Pierre will be exposed to SEA anyways. Going in to the ED exposing multiple similarly valued players (Bennett/Kerfoot/Holl) would make it easier for management to persuade/pay Seattle to take the preferred player. It would cost a heck of a lot more to pay SEA to select Engvall > Holl, for instance.

I've been adamant about it, but I think it's a no brainer unless Bennett's market value is propped up by draft position or an overzealous GM favouring toughness.
