We have almost 9 mil in cap space - a 1 yr low cost flyer on Kane costs zilch - if he has a rebound year… Could be a big boon for the team! if not, what’s the real cost? If for some reason they tank, despite all reason point to the opposite… He probably still has some value at the deadline. Really there’s no downside.
Roster spot ?

Idk if he takes low salary 1 year deal I’m fine with it. He really won’t do anything we desperately need (on ice) but why not take the gamble?

There's plenty of forward talent in the pipeline. Stay on course developing them. Acquiring defensive liabilties is pointless, and would be demoralizing. We aren't winning the cup this year unless Levi stands on his head anyway.
Buffalo can do 1-2 yr deals on players as bridges for youth.
F*** Zegras. He only had 6 more points than CM who some are clamoring to leave town and when I point out they're on a similar level I get 8 laugh emojis in the trade forum. F*** Zegras. Overrated. Never had more than 65 points. Ducks fans are disillusioned.
Zebras for Mitts?

Zegras is still young. Still developing.

I suppose another issue I have is are we planning to break in 4 rookies potentially next year if Kane is signed? Rosen is obviously closer than we thought, Kulich, Savoie and maybe Benson.

Feels like we need at least one to be with the big club all year.

The downside is that you’re using assets in the context of cap space to not fortify a weakness on the team, team defensive play, but using it on an unknown asset in Kane who MIGHT BE a shell of his former self while your team is competent in offense.

It’s like you have a leaky roof on your house that you should fix asap, but you decide to buy a classic car without an engine, to go with your other 4 classic cars beforehand.

It’s just a dumb decision at this time to go after Kane, you don’t need him.

I'll take Kane>Zegras.

We have one of the youngest rosters, if not the youngest roster in the NHL. Another young skilled player doesn't make much sense nor is it what this team needs right now.

Kane is a seasoned vet with playoff/stanley cup experience. If he is will to take nothing more then 5 mil for 1 year.

I don't think this team NEEDS either player but if I had to choose between the two, I'll take experience over youth.

Is there a third option?

If it's a 1970 Chevelle 454 I'm getting the car. I mean literally the Chevelle...not P Kane.

Honest question for anybody of the opinion Kane isn't what we need (which I understand on its surface): are we maxxed out offensively?

We scored 296 (3rd most) and surrendered 300 (8th most) last year. Most of us are willing to sacrifice some GF for much better GA via more conservative system tweaks and improved goalkeeping, 280 GF to 250 GA or so. But what if we score 325 and concede 285 instead? Does that not get us to where we want to be?

We're built to play fast and score. While I expect some team defense maturity to show this year, why not just outscore teams? Playoff hockey is a fair argument, but plenty of Sabre fans would be happy to face that problem when it comes.

Patrick Kane scored at about the same pace at 5on5 last year as JJ Peterka and Tyson Jost did for us

Sure, while hobbled by a chronic hip injury and playing for one of the worst teams in a decade. All of this is contingent on him being rejuvenated by the1 hip procedure, which is obviously no guarantee. I don't buy that we'll have to sign him without having a good idea if that procedure was successful.

Don't powerplay points still count towards beating other teams. Our PP was dead at times last year. Also, 61 ES points in 78 games the year before is nothing to sneeze at. I'd be curious to see some charts that explain why he's so poorly ranked while he's been putting up monster numbers still.

Ask Capitals fans how Backstrom looked after hip resurfacing surgery

Right, so there's a decent chance he's fried. But contingent means none of this conversation even exists if the surgery doesn't go well, so 🤷.
Like I said, I see a bit of (on ice) use for him while Quinn is out and if he’s willing to sign cheap for 1 year. Once Quinn is back… not really.

Also Kane surely pushes one of the kids out and while I don’t necessarily have an issue with that, we are gonna try to step in next year with maybe 4 rookies on forward?

I hear ya. I'm curious, do you think the rumors are real? Jeremy White doesn't break out the SSSS unless there's something there usually. And if you do think it's real, what do you think Adams and Co. are seeing that you aren't?

And to me, "4 rookies next year" is something to worry about if/when we get there, and even then it's not a big deal. It's more *people* looking as hard as they can for something to ***** about and having to skip all the way to next year to find one.

I think the thing is we won't really know that until he's on the ice. Everything can look good medically, but how effective he will be won't be evident until midway through the season, at which point you're already committed.

what he’s been saying for a couple years now. He wants people who want to be Buffalo Sabres. When you have maybe the best American born player ever excited to put on the jersey, I’m sure it impacts a lot of young guys. He adds a tonnnn of off ice experience.

However, to me, that still doesn’t mean he’s going to add value on the ice more often than not. Because you can’t scratch a guy like Kane. Idk like I said, if he wants to sign for cheap for one year, let’s do it. Why not.

Right, I just don't see a world where any team signs him 1/$5m sight unseen. He's essentially a new, unknown player after this procedure. I don't buy that his reputation gets him signed to a deal he wants without skating multiple times for teams. Odell Beckham holding private workouts for teams after his ACL is a direct example, teams need something to believe these guys can play again.

Now if he wants 1/$1.5m sight unseen, sure. He'll be worth it in advertising and ticket sales alone.
