Doesn't everyone remember how the complexion of the team completely changed when Prust arrived? Well, if this works out, there will be a similar impact. A much needed impact.

Spot on, there has been lots of negativity around because of the season the boys are having. This is shaping up to be a scary team when the bottom 6 gets upgraded. Nobody will want to play against us and that's what I want, not some freakin draft picks, we're not rebuilding, this move is perfect.

Been scarin' me all season.

Btw, draft picks are not for rebuilding, they're for keeping up the foundation.

Just like a heartbeat Harvey, Mike York, Sean Avery, Noweighan Hobbit kinda impact !?

Hopefully one of the Rangers 38 3rd round picks will help keep that foundation sturdy lol.

In all seriousness, I would bet that they will replenish some of those picks either tomorrow or close to the draft.

38 ! Haha !

3 3rd rounders, and we lost the highest one.

Who knows what tomorrow brings.....

So, this is kinda hard to watch. It's Clowe fighting Prust from Halloween last season. What's intriguing, is that its a battle between two guys with similar battle level. The only reason Clowe barely wins is because he's got size and strength advantage. I share, because this is a portion of what we're getting with Clowe. A kid who can play the game AND fight AND hit. The kind of guy that rallies the troops and allows the better players the spine to go to the dirty areas because they know there's a guy on the bench who has their back.

My guess is that Slats will be moving some additional players (Fingers crossed for Pyatt at the least, Boyle following) for draft picks and some middle aged talent... Not young (we have plenty of very solid prospects right now), and not Beaver Brad age

I do like this move... Our bottom 6 is ****. While I want to blame torts, you do have to realize that he really has nothing to work with... I mean, over the last 10 games, who has been the best of the bottom 6 Forwards?

Powe, strictly on the PK for the most part
Boyle at center... dear god... :puke:
Miller/Krieder (MAYBE, and that is a big MAYBE, they are both too young and undeveloped)...

that's about it. Halpern was useless, Pyatt is useless period, Asham has been injured for basically a quarter of this season...

Clowe is good for us. Need the size and heart. Hopefully that stirs the team. With Pit coming off an embarrassing loss tonight to the worst team in the league (after Florida), Richards and Gabs getting back on their game slowly but surely, there might be some chemistry developing here... FINALLY.

Let's pray Stepan continues to be Derek Gretzky :p

Well if Gaborik is dealt at the draft, we'll have a 1st again; could probably send a couple 3rds to a team with multiple 2nd's. I'd rather just keep Boyle, see if he can do better next season. He has important attributes. I don't understand why Boyle at C makes you sick, when he's our best face off man and a great PK'er.

I really don't know why everyone is up for Gabs getting traded... We want to dump our 40 goal scorer who is playing in a shortened season, after a shoulder surgery, with no training camp, and zero informal practice, coupled with several of his top 6 linemates being traded away... Thats alot to take in in a matter of months

Richards will be bought out in 2014 Offseason, for sure.

Boyle, unfortunately will not be dealt...

However, i can see Pyatt and Asham being used to try and fetch some picks/talent. Pyatt especially, even with all that Jam i think Torts has realized he does not do anything.

It's arithmetic.

Short memories. Poor judgment.

Also, I'm pretty sure that this means Gaborik or Richards are getting bought out, no?

Sather's got other moves he can make if he wants to. If Clowe is resigned and Gabby isn't moved, Sather can't really do much other than offload several contracts that are a bit high for the players' value (some combo of Pyatt/Boyle/Asham/Powe). This could open up space for Clowe and Gabby to stay, but unless Sather magically gets Clowe and all of our RFAs to sign ridiculously low-priced contracts, it leaves little cap space and rips open some pretty big holes in the roster.

So yea, Gaborik being moved at the draft makes the most sense. Not that moving Gabby doesn't leave a hole; but the added cap space coupled with whatever return he gets gives Sather options.

I just hope SJ doesn't draft anyone significant with our picks. Because the moar intelligent posters on HFNYR will be like "OMGZ we tr8ed a great playar strait up for Cloew". And I will puke.

Clowe is a tough, physical player who proved he can score and has some hands. If he resigns and can score 12-15 goals a season while providing agitation and intimidation, this has been a good trade. I'm not overly excited about this move, but it's not like I think Sather just pulled a Feaster. Clowe will make our bottom 6 significantly better. I'd expect Boyle or Pyatt being moved today. It's gonna be an interesting couple of hours.

Cap management

I don't want Gaborik traded, necessarily, but it's inevitable.

I didn't mean to make it sound like you did, but a ton of people do for the reasons I specified.

As for the cap stuff, I really don't like how strongly you and many others are talking about it. We're projected to have 11.6 million in cap space next year, buy out Richards and it's up to 18 million. If we shed Boyle and Pyatt that's another 3 million to put it at 21 million. Ash and Powe could free up another 2 mil. Stralman is due 1.7 mil. Guys who need new contracts that we will be interested in bringing back are Clowe, Step, Hags, MZA, McD, Eminger. Step, Hags and McD are RFAs. I'm not sure ultimately what everyone gets, but I don't think Gabby has to go.

This, though I'd go a bit further. Despite the ****** season, I don't think anyone wants him to be moved right now - that wouldn't make much sense. But at the draft, if it is necessary to keep the core in place now (assuming Clowe seems like a good fit - which I'd find hard to believe he won't be; but I guess we'll see), I'm all for it. The fact that he can score those goals is great, but his game is too one dimensional for my taste, he gets shut down relatively easily in the playoffs, and when he doesn't score goals he adds nothing and creates nothing.

For $7.5 million per year, I'd much rather have a couple cheaper, quality pieces (legit 3C, solid LW, 5/6th d-man for instance) than Gabby -- even when he is having a 40 goal season. In my mind that fixes some of the holes on this team and sets them up a lot better than having Gabby eat up $7.5 mil on the roster. If there is a way to keep him and fill those holes, then by all means. I just don't see that as realistic - you're going to have to open up a pretty big hole somewhere in the roster (or roll the dice and hope prospects pan out quickly) if you want to keep him, Clowe, and the RFAs.

Now I'm not saying this combination of players is a realistic possibility, but just demonstrating what $7.5 million can get you in this league and how serious holes in our lineup could be plugged with that extra cap space. You move Gabby and get rid of Pyatt and you could fit any three of these players:

Ryane Clowe - LW - $4 mil
Steve Ott - C - $2.95 mil
Tyler Ennis - LW - $2.8 mil
Curtis Glencross - LW - $2.55 mil
Jamie McBain - RH D - $1.8 mil
Marc-Andre Bergeron - PP D - $1 mil

I don't know about you, but I take some combination of players like those in a heartbeat over Gabby, Pyatt.

Edit: Before people jump all over me - I don't necessarily think all of those players are good fits on the same team, or with NYR for that matter. I'm just demonstrating the point of what could be done with $7.5mil if that cap space were opened up (with players I've seen mentioned frequently in trade threads).

In the scenario you just laid out, you just blew up the center position. Hags, Step, Eminger, McD, MZA, Stralman, and Clowe would require in the range of $15 mil to sign - at least (I'm being generous). But now you've gotten rid of Boyle and Richards. Who are their replacements for $7-8 million? Not to mention we have no fourth line (Powe, Asham, Pyatt out the door). Nor is the 6th dman slot really solidified. Unless you expect prospects to work out next year - which is a gamble in my mind and not something that should be relied upon as a guarantee; but even then I'm not sure it works - as McIlrath and Fasth aren't exactly signed to cheap contracts as far as ELCs go.

That's some slim depth and a lot of youth.

Clowe will command more than 3 million. Leino got 4 a year based off of one postseason.

The next two-four weeks will determine what next years' roster looks like.

I don't see why many compare Clowe to Dubi, Avery, Prust. He is meaner and has more offensive ability than all 3 combined, and only Prust can somewhat hang with Clowe in a fight. The guy is a legit top 6 power forward. Clowe brings a lot of what this team has desperately needed for years - if this was 2008. His age is the only issue with this deal, but it's huge. Most PFWs don't age gracefully in this league, with guys like Gary Roberts being a noteable exception. Obviously Sather is banking on the latter. It's a dangerous bet.

I fully expect Clowe to be resigned whatever it takes. Probably an 8 year deal to keep the cap hit manageable. Trading 2 high picks in a good draft for a rental when you're a bubble team would be utterly idiotic. Sather has never been a man with a plan and is prone to bad risks that blow up in his face, but he's not a moron. Let's hope Clowe looks more like Roberts in 5 years than most power forwards.
