Confirmed with Link: Ryane Clowe to Rangers for NYR 2013 2nd, FLA 2013 3rd, Conditional 2nd 2014

4 first round picks in last 12 years

Your point? That doesn't mean they are in what people consider "win now" mode. Maybe we're just having a semantics issue -- but I see "win now" mode as throwing away valuable future assets to try to make a run for the Cup in the short-term (1-2 years).

I don't see them doing that. They are good at recognizing late round gems and picking up undrafted players. Not to mention that once they have prospects, they're incredibly good at evaluating talent and they don't throw away good prospects for nothing (who was the last significant prospect they moved that became something?). They think long term. All of that gives them the freedom to be able to deal first round picks if they want (which, by the way, their first rounders were pretty much all high first round picks in the past 12 years -- so not quite the same). None of that to me means they are in "win now" mode. It means they manage their hockey club incredibly efficiently and intelligently.

Really interesting to hear all the opinions on this.

Don't think it's a slam dunk either way. There are risks.

But I like it.

I don't think it's a slam-dunk either way. I just don't think this betters the Rangers' chances of making the playoffs or making a run in the playoffs. I don't like giving up picks for something that I don't think is the final piece.

You got me there. It was meant more in the context of he's a replaceable piece for this team as currently constructed, and a vauled commodity to a contender this year (which imo would have been the time to move him). Useless is Stu Bickel. I should have made a better distinction.

It's all good. While I agree that he's replaceable, I don't think we can really replace him with just draft picks. I have no idea who we would use to replace him right now.

#NYR expecting to have Ryane Clowe available for tomorrow night's game against the Penguins.

I would argue, the team lacks top players at the moment.

Callahan and Hagelin are 5th and 6th in team scoring, respectively.

Antoine Lefleur and Ethan Werek were also 2nd rounders.

Lafleur was a 2nd in 07. Hagelin was a 6th.

Daren Olver, Dale Weise (lol) and Bruce Graham were all 2nds in 04.

The Rangers drafted Callahan in the 4th.

When can we admit that Sather has a knack of finding a way to offset picks he loses in trades?

Just an aside, I hope Buffalo pulls this off tonight so that we don't have to deal with all this "WIN STREAK" BS.

Nah this is worse, now they're gonna be pissed and really up for the game.

Then again, we're always the Stanley Cup to Pittsburgh so i don't think it would make a difference.

I don't think so, if they can tie the record tomorrow night at MSG that's a guaranteed loss. If the streak is over tonight, then tomorrow is likely another letdown.

On a team that's not scoring?

Not saying there isn't a risk. But drafting Kreider in the first certainly makes up for Werek not panning out.[/QUOTE]

When he does.

Then they're not top player.

Can he get the alleged top players to produce? I'd like Clowe a whole lot more if they were producing.

So do you like this move or not? Seems like you're saying you don't like it because the draft picks may someday be good players and/or our "top" players have not yet produced with Clowe (even though they haven't aged yet).

It's hard to believe that clowe's style of play and history of 50 and even 60 point seasons would be worth the possible success of a 2nd rounder or two. No?

Brilliant move. Usually the players Sather brings in start at 20 or 30 goals a year and take a year or two to get down to zero. Look at all the time he saved.

Not Trolling But this could be the funniest post I have read all year on any board Still laughing

I don't like the move because I don't see it solving the Rangers' biggest problem and that is Richads and Gaborik not being productive players.

I question whether this move really improves the Rangers chances of making the playoffs, let alone make a run in them. I hope I'm wrong on all of those things.

I don't like giving up picks when there's chance they will not make the playoffs and they don't have a first round pick.

Sharks fan here. Our posters were genuine with our enthusiastic optimism he would turn it around quickly. I would be willing to bet you guys will be happy with him—but don't expect an instant change, because it seems as though you guys are already having a tough time scoring.

Now WE just need some of these picks to pay off down the road :)

Hate to be that guy, but I'd still be interested in Glencross assuming we can dump Boyle/Pyatt. The issue is that we have very few picks to trade, meaning prospects would likely go the other way. Would anyone deal one of the additional 3rds and a guy like Thomas or St. Croix?

You're right, but obviously higher picks give us a better chance of finding these players. Especially in a deep draft like this.
