It’s probably a waiting game because at this point we’re like dude we’re kinda in a race here, sorry we aren’t burning the year and getting you games

Once we’re mathematically out that changes. Possibly tonight. Maybe he ends up taking the ATO anyway.
Right, while the odds are pretty slim, it is still possible it may come down to the last game of the season.

“It went well but no decision yet.”

The bar for success around this organization is so hilariously low

I mean....this should just be a formality at this point

This paragraph from Lance's article in the Buffalo news is probably the sticking point:

Really sounds like the Sabres are saying they want him in the AHL next year. Curious if that is why he hasn't signed yet.

I wonder what part of the call went well?

It just seems like its a binary yes or no at this point.

Just sign him and waive Bryson/Clague/Joker (he is probably instantly on the same level as those guys). I don’t really care about burning a year if that guarantees he is signed. If you don’t burn the year, that’s also just another year for him to up his value before he hits RFA.

Maybe they would like him to sign the ATO to get playing time in the playoffs but if he won't take it they'll sign him to the NHL contract and get him in a game or two. I bet they are showing him the path for him and hoping he's sold enough on the organization to take the ATO with the Amerks. That's what he's trying to decide.

They don't need to waive anyone for him to sign. There is no roster limit after the trade deadline. Dingo has a nice encapsulation of the two paths he has to decide upon - does he want NHL time or does he take the ATO to go to the Amerks for their playoff run?

ATO would be huge for Roch. But I do really think the choices will change if/when the Sabres get eliminated.

He's not playing with Buffalo unless they're eliminated. If the Sabres are still alive on Friday, he'll sign a PTO and play with the Amerks. If the Cbus game doesn't mean anything, they'll give him a few game shifts to burn a year.

Feels like Johnson's agent knows the position the Sabres are and are trying to squeeze them for the most they can. The fact that the 'take the pick' narrative popped up (out of left field) just days ago shows that the Sabres media types really do carry water for the front office.

Joker is, without question, physically talented enough to be a top-4 defenseman. His issue is his brain/IQ/etc. When he engages his brain, he's an absolute legit minute-munching top 4 guy. We've seen it.

But too often his brain just shuts down and yeah.........
Isn't this how people used to describe McCabe?

Eh, that commentary has been out there for the better part of a year though. I don't think they just got wind of something new, they're just reiterating old points since they have nothing else to say right now.

That was mostly when people assumed he was going to walk (which, was a fair assumption). Dreger (and others) came out with that he intends to sign here a month back. The idea that the SABRES would prefer the pick over signing the player is really what is new and feels like a narrative being pushed by the front office via their local media mouthpieces.

It's the same comment that was made last year though by such journalistic luminaries as PHam. It's not new nor do I give someone like him the least bit of credence to be in cahoots with the Sabres regarding something like this. He's flapping his lips because he doesn't have anything else to fill his segment.

Dreger, the Lorax of player agents, let it be known Johnson would sign, a signal from Johnson's reps of his intentions. What remains to be ironed out is if they are starting the deal this year in Buffalo or with an ATO to the Amerks and starting it in the following season.
