I believe that it is within the realm of possibility that Johnson earns the 3rd LHD spot out of camp or that he doesn't and he gets sent to Rochester.

Johnson is unique in that few 1st round pick D play all four years in the NCAA. As such, he is way more developed than your usual first year pro. So, I would not make blanket assumptions about how things go for him if he signs with the Sabres.
Oh, I am not assuming anything, and I would not be shocked to see Johnson start the year on the big club's roster if he signs.

I am just stating my opinion on where I think he starts, based on how Adams and Granato tend to error on the conservative side when they have the option.

I am also just stating a widely accepted position, which is nearly all NCAA D could benefit with a spell in the AHL before making the fulltime jump to the NHL. The more gradual increase in competition exposure often tends to help smooth the transistion Many posters are automatically penciling him into the top six to start next year, and I think that scenario is far less likely than likely.

Well, the last Sabres D prospect made the jump from the NCAA straight to the NHL...

From last season:

Again, before tossing him into some trade proposals, let them see what they have at the pro level.

There is no indication he is not going to sign.

Glad someone out there has some info. I may or may not go hard on Lance's prediction that Johnson walks based on nothing from a few months ago. Then again, he's been deleting Tweets lately, so maybe that isn't in the cards.

Player comp is sort of like Brett Hedican if you are old enough to remember him and saw 2 inches off of him - a very good skater who takes care of his own zone but isn't up in the play as much as one might think a good skater would be.

Almost a perfect scenario if he signs after many (including myself) we’re pessimistic about the college players. Would be great to have him and Levi locked up while recouping that 3rd for that City Slicker Eric Portillo, BBA.

I've always compared him to what Pysyk could/should have been: A smooth-skating, defensively sound defenseman who makes an excellent first pass.....and always strikes you as someone who puts up more offense but doesn't.

Maybe Matt Grezelcyk?

A taller Grez would probably work too.

I like that he's bulked up to 191 and he is balanced on his skates to get under people in possession battles.

I'll be happier when he actually signs, but I'm really happy that things seem to be heading in that direction. Count me among the faithful in this regard as I thought he gave a pretty strong endorsement of the Sabres experience last summer at the development camp. I thought that the fact he showed up this year going into his final year was one of the signs that he'd sign. I really like the way that he plays with confidence, the vision, skating, edgework, and passing. He might not have racked up a ton of points, but that doesn't mean that he doesn't have offensive acuity. Very exciting news.
