I know he will sign. Somewhere.

:sarcasm:

I hope he'll sign with the Sabres but I don't think he will sign with the Sabres.
When does it seem to actually work out for guys who don't sign with us of late?

Pass up signing with a team where there is uber opportunity for what exactly??

He'd receive every benefit of the doubt here. Mind boggling that he would forego that.

I agree. If he is realistic about what he is, then his opportunity here is as good or better than anywhere.

I don't even claim to know what "he is" or might become. I just know that the opportunity is abundant here.

When NHL careers aren't guaranteed for anyone, for the most part anyway, I'm not sure you could ask for anything better.

But who am I, I guess

With Dahlin and Power here, he will not have a great opportunity to get PP time here. I can see him viewing that as less than ideal.

We also don’t know what he thinks about it being tough to crack the top 4 with Dahlin, Samuelson, and Power here.

If he opts not to sign here, I can understand. Especially if he opts to sign closer to home with the Kings or Ducks.

Gotcha

The Sabres really need to do a better job identifying potential problems with signing guys when they make their draft selections.

If he chooses not to sign, how many times would this be for us?

If he is expecting power play time on any NHL team, he needs to adjust his expectations. He’s barely even a power play guy in college.

He doesn't play PP in Minnesota either, so it's not like he's going to be missing out on part of his collegiate game. If he thinks he has an easier road in Anaheim, he's not paying attention to their blueline prospects on LD (or right for that matter, since his partner LaCombe is a Duck pick) or LA due to their piles of RD.

That's one reason we're perfect for him. He slots in perfectly for what he is.
Him and Joker might make a nice third pair that your not afraid to give 15 min to during the regular season. I want better next to Power for the next couple years, but that would give Johnson time to develop his NHL game and see where it slots him.

Where does everyone get the assumption that hes expecting to get PP time, is this just some type of coping mechanism.

The fact that he's been able to play both sides should be a selling point. Regardless of what handed defenseman the team adds can actually benefit him.

Chychrun-Johnson (swap/rotate in Boosh as needed)
Johnson-Mayfield/Joker

He can sign and presumably should have a solid steady partner assuming the right moves are made in the off-season. He's always played a solid steady game. Was incredibly noticeable the few times I saw him live. He'll have a spot here if he wants (at least he should). I grow more optimistic he will sign.

It's something guys like Peters have mentioned when speculating about if he signs or not.
I am not sure why either. Its not like he is a sure fire top pairing dman prospect. He is not really that in college right now. To me, his ceiling is a second pair well rounded guy, but more likely an excellent third pair. I think of him like Joker, as a slightly below average size dman that is a good skater. I do not see him being on the power play at all. Possibly the PK depending on the style of PK used (better in an attack style using his skating/speed/stick.)

Point is, he is not of the size and skill level to dictate what he wants in the NHL. He will have to work hard and fight for a spot. I think the best position for him to succeed at his first few years would be the third pair, anywhere he goes. That spot is wide open on the Sabres for him to take.

No matter what. STill need a top 4 dman.

Sammy - Dahls
Power - XXX
Johnson - Joker.

That looks theoretically solid. Just need Johnson to sign and the XXX to magically get filled.

If Johnson doesn't sign here I wish him the same career path as Petersen, Vesey and Butcher.

No, I wont be bitter. :sarcasm:
Do you expect him to be better than that? He’s basically on track to have a career like those guys, which is pretty decent for a 2nd round pick since more often than not they don’t even have NHL careers. He’s a defensive Jimmy Vesey.

Butcher and Petersen are in the AHL and Vesey's hanging by a thread.

I expect better than an AHL player yes.

The your expectations for a 2nd rounder are insanely unrealistic. Vesey has played 422 NHL games so far, which is amazing value for a 2nd round pick.
It would be but Johnson was a first round pick :sarcasm:

1st round picks have a 94% chance of playing in the NHL.

Maybe your expectations are too low?

why are we calling him a second rounder when he was drafted in the first round?
