I've been seeing SO MANY grown adults calling college kids "dumb" lately for wanting to stay in college. Sad way to think.
It’s not like his options are college or waiter at the IHOP. In fact in many cases not moving up in competition can hurt your development.

which would make the person who chooses that dumb

He can stay in Rochester two full seasons. Its OK to not rush every prospect to the NHL.

We will have roster decisions to make every season. There will be hockey trades in our future. There is no hurry to make a decision with RyJo.

My gut feeling is he won’t need 2 full seasons. Samuelsson played 45 games and he started a year younger.

Johnson is a different type of player but similar caliber prospect. *If* he signs now I think he’ll be knocking on the NHL door by this time next year.

We know his attitude to the game on RD? This can also be one of the key factors when signing.

That would be fine if that is the case. We don't have to guess what he will be after 40 games in Rochester. We can let those games happen and see where he is at.

You get paid going to college where I live, lots of people taking a first or second degree late in life but I guess it's way different in the states. Still, shouldn't he afford one college year easily for the money he'll make post-elc?

It’s really annoying. If I were on a full ride, I’d take as long as possible before I signed a contract with a pro team in whatever sport that I was drafted in.

Yes, the money in whatever sport is probably more annually than I’d make outside of it. But at least I’d have that degree, or close to it, in my back pocket. And we all know that degree makes a huge amount of difference in starting salary.

Like, a degree in finance will pay way more than if I had to go to school for two more years. Even if “former NHL player” gives me a bit of leeway.

Yea in the US (and Canada) your income is student loans or your family paying your bills. If you get a full ride scholarship, everything is taken care of, but you don’t get “extras”. You get your dorm room, cafeteria food, books, and course fees paid for, and that’s it. And I guess if you have a vehicle the parking lot fees get paid for.

Johnson for Faber (or Durzi). Problem solved.

Yes, I wanted Durzi in his draft year.
Well I'm basically saying that if he stays in college and Adams won't do anything. Though LA fans seem to really appreciate Faber and Durzi. I'm wondering what Jordan Spence is like, I just haven't seen him play, but he's another RD in their great depth RDs.

money you get from coming out will pay fir college if you think you are good enough to be pro.

it’s a big risk on people who think they are a star on their team so they shoukd be able to make it as a pro but fail.

there are not certainty in scholarships. The kids can lose them because of grades or because of coaching change.

I hope in their back pocket they don’t have a career ending or serious injury derailing that plan before turning pro… Lots to think about…not all individuals are equal on career paths in college.

Spence has looked great since being called up by the Kings a couple of weeks ago. An offensive dynamo and solid in his own zone for a smaller player. The Kings are loaded with young RHD throughout their system - Durzi, Spence, Faber, Brandt Clarke, Grans - in addition to Doughty, Roy, and Walker who are NHL vets. If they're looking to move one and Johnson would rather sign closer to home, that could make sense.

You’re not wrong. I just think if somebody gets a full ride scholarship, which is most of these college picks (or future ones), getting as many course credits as possible SHOULD be more important. A best worst case scenario is you pay to get a couple extra credits to officially graduate

Obviously I know NHL money, or even AHL money, will pay for college. I’m just saying if you can get a degree, for free, you’d be an idiot for turning that down.

And I know they can lose a scholarship. But I do not blame anyone if they feel “get close enough to a degree” as they can get. These players are for the most part coming from major hockey programs. They’re not coming from a confusing one

With the ability to complete a degree online, it doesn’t make as much sense as it used to.

That's been my take on him as well - he'll likely be ready toward the end of next season.

not when you have a limited career window of around 20-32 Yrs of age.
