There's certainly an argument to be made to sign him this year and prevent that from happening.

I agree with that. Seems like it could be a "tweener" year for him. How much better would he get with another year at Minnesota vs starting his pro career in the AHL.?

  1. He's a first round pick finishing his D+2 year in a quality program - Big 10 Champs.
  2. He's already known for his intelligence, confidence, decision making, edgework, passing, vision, quickness, speed, and playmaking.
  3. He looked very good in the WJC
  4. He's had a sophomore year in which he's on a 20 point pace for a full regular season which is more than double last year.
  5. He's on the ice in all the critical situations at Minnesota
  6. He's had 1 goal and 3 assists in the 4 post season games thus far.
So yes - there's an argument there in my opinion.

Long term I could see him and Jokiharju being a good pairing. Both mobile and Jokiharju is more defensive and would allow for Johnson to tap into his offense more.

I totally read that wrong the first time.

Agreed.

That's funny.

Related to misunderstandings, this reminds me of a very old SNL sketch called "Slapped by Beaver Tails"

It was a panel discussion led by Victoria Jackson featuring stories of people who were literally slapped by beaver tails. The first two guests had stories about swimming or whatever and their stories about how they were slapped by beaver tails with photos or physical evidence like the imprint of a beaver tail across their face or torso. Sorry, its been a long time and this is from memory without checking YouTube. The third panelist was Phil Hartman - dressed in an all black cowboy get-up with black leather chaps and black cowboy hat. Victoria Jackson asks to him to tell his story and he stands up, and says - "I'm sorry, I think I may have misunderstood the intent of your program" - and walks out.

Hahaha oh man, I'll have to look that one up. Phil was the best, I still miss him.

Eh, I would like him to take one more year at UM before signing. He had developed nicely this year, duplicate that and then turn pro.
Depends on how you view the AHL team, and how confident you are in your team's ability to develop prospects. If, "not very", is the answer, then leave him with the Gophers, who have a decent coach and program. I don't think Johnson is too good for the NCAA at this point, nor is he ready for the NHL. He has all kinds of speed, but needs to process the game better and faster, and, like most young players, get stronger.

He certainly could play in the AHL next year, or even now, especially in it's diluted state.

I’m very firmly in the “not very” realm of things with this organization.

I think the AHL is an interesting idea given how decimated the team is.

Maybe keep him out of the line of fire, is what you're saying? I like Motzko at the U. They are still recovering from the Lucia years, IMO, but are getting there. Johnson could do worse than stay there for another year.
