For whatever it's worth, Sakic got every penny he wanted from the Avs... and the rest is history.

I agree. I know a deal will get done eventually but i am worried about the real future of johansen and the blue jackets. Just really wish i knew what the bid deal is about, the bridge got sent last week (which is what management wanted) and still no deal. I really think these delayed negotiations and tactics could really bite the organsization in the ass come next contract signing!!!

Johansen's camp likely submitted a very high number for the two year proposal and the CBJ have a much lower number in mind. Similar to what you see in arbitration cases except Joey does have arbitration rights. This is not a unique situation and is unlikely to have significant feelings hurt. It will get done and then the next contract will be a big one!

Subtitles, no doubt.

Nothing happens until the last 30 minutes of the film and then BAM everyone dies. And then Joey signs. And then there's a rainbow. But it's missing the color green for artistic reasons. It's beautiful. People cry. The end.

Wonder if the PK Subban deal is swaying any of the bridge contract fans/Jarmo. My guess would be no, but still interesting to see how PK's bridge worked out.

Wonder if the PK Subban deal is swaying any of the bridge contract fans/Jarmo. My guess would be no, but still interesting to see how PK's bridge worked out.

Montreal's GM Bergevin's handling of Subban's contract negotiations cost the team around $3-$3.5 million per year over the next 4 years. Subban could have been signed for 6 years at around $5.5-$6 million. The "bridge" saved the team around $6-7 million in total over the past 2 years with the just completed $2.75 million per year contract.

Of the now 10 relevant years on Subban (2 bridge, 8 on this deal), the "bridge strategy" cost the team between $5.5 and $8.5 million over the first 6 years AAV. Total cost for first 6 years will be $41.5 million vs. $33-36 million had a $5.5-$6 million deal been signed instead of the bridge.

Subban's AAV is $9 million over his 8 year deal and the cash payout is $7m, $7m, $11m, $11m, $10m, $10m, $8m, $8m. The first 4 years average $9 million cash payout as do the last 4 years of the deal.

So, the bridge strategy and maximum term cost roughly $7 million in cash for the benefit of signing Subban to an extra four years at the third highest AAV and salary in the NHL. They are now locked in to a contract which will eat almost 13% of their cap space for the next 8 years unless the cap goes up. Should Subban be a real Norris Trophy-type defenseman, it will be worth it. If not, and his play is so so like it was during a large portion of the past regular season, it won't be. Subban got very little ice time for Team Canada in this past season's Olympics. It's very hard for me to see that he's really worth his huge salary and cap hit and the risk associated with an 8 year deal.

By signing Johansen to a $6 million year 6 year deal, the Jackets will take on some risk, but they will almost certainly eliminate the risk of having to pay him at the very top end of the pay scale like Montreal did with Subban. Jarmo needs to get with the big money reality of today's NHL and sign Johansen on the (relative) cheap.

I get your points, and I can't disagree with your logic ... but what makes this kind of deal scary is the contract Derick Brassard signed with us a few years back. I'm not - and I won't - compare Johansen to Brassard, but that is one reason for wanting to do a bridge deal.

If Johansen produces like an $8 million dollar player, I can't see the Jackets being disappointed to have to pay him like one. To date, he hasn't convinced me, for one, that he's going to consistently be that kind of player. That's why I understand the desire for a bridge to let him prove it. If he does, pay the man. Then again, I'm not the one to be signing the checks with all the zeros on the end! Glad it's Jarmo and not me doing the deal.

Some Montreal fans are saying he was asking for 5 years and $25,000,000 originally.

So, you have 2 options. The first option is what Montreal did. The second option is what they could have done.

Option 1:

2 years, $5,750,000 = AAV of $2,875,000 (23 years old and 24 years old)
8 years, $72,000,000 = AAV of $9,000,000 (25 years old to 32 years old)

Option 2:

5 years, $25,000,000 = AAV of $5,000,000 (23 years old to 27 years old)
UFA (I am pretty sure he would have been a UFA)

The first 5 years of the contracts he did sign.
5 years, $30,750,000 = AAV of $6,150,000 (23 years old to 27 years old)

The second 5 years of the contracts he did sign.
5 years, $47,000,000 = AAV of $9,400,000 (28 years old to 32 years old)

How much would he have signed for as a UFA (if he was a UFA) after his 5 year contract in option 2? Would they have been able to keep him? So, they may have paid around $5,750,000 more for his first 5 years, but they get him for another 5 years. They may not have been able to keep him. If they were able to keep him, they may have had to sign him for a lot more years than 5 more. Me, personally, I would rather have him until he is 32 years old than until he is 35 years old (for example). I would take 10 years over 5 years and then having to sign him again (while having to outbid every other team that would be able to sign him as an UFA).

I'm hoping he meant $3 million total over the course of the two years. Otherwise, this may not get done by training camp.

I'm guessing we're offering around 2 years, 8 million and he wants 2 years, 11 million.

EDIT: just read that the difference is per season. Joey and his agent are officially delusional.
