It's the same with a lot of the grinders over the years. Ortemeyer, Callahan, York, etc were all overrated.

Just no. I was here on hf for both York and Orty, no one even expected Orty to make the team, after either season he played here. York was added to every trade rumor on the planet, Morris, Poti, Carter, Bure. I don't know what fan circles you were in back then, but those guys were never overrated for a single day by our fanbase. The fact that you choose York, Orty, and Callahan as comparables in any level of discussion gives an insight into the worth of your opinion on this topic. Three grinders? Nope. Three overrated players? Nope. Three guys who had similar career arcs? Nope. Three guys that had the same long-shot path, and eventual triumph as captains of their teams? Nope. Three players who's play style, attitude, and work ethic defined an entire generation of NYR hockey? Nope. Three players who'll go on to have long, productive, careers in this league by playing three zone two way hockey? Nope. Your opinion xxxxx

I've been an active NYR fan since 1984, and Cally is right next to Leetch as my all-time favorites. I know the new cap-era doesn't breed the same connections between players and their fans that many of us got to grow up with, but I assure you there's a reason many of the fans here that have been around since the 80's adore our former captain. We've seen captains come and go, high end talent come and go, and high energy grinders... Callahan was a special player for the Blueshirts.

Speak for yourself! I question whether or not you've watched his play the last two seasons.

And when did he produce this points? Certainly not in the playoffs.

You just described Ryan Callahan this season.

I'm evaluating Callahan's career. I don't know how you can even bother disputing this.

I'll stick to my original statement. If you were around to watch Rangers hockey in the late 90's and early 2000's you would realize what Callahan meant to this organization. You're oblivious though. Proof is in your asinine 'overrated' statement.

So odd that he actually got traded. I'm still shocked how he held his position in the negotiations. He could have easily signed but greatly overvalued his position.

That said, he along with our other homegrown players were the Rangers. One by one they are dropping. Sad actually. He was a huge fan favorite up until all this contract nonsense. Hopefully we all look passed that now.

Sad looking at my background at work and all the departed Rangers. Cally, Dubinsky, Anisimov, MDZ....

Good post Slingshot. I still remember you from the Rangers BB years ago

That's the best goal he scored as a Ranger. Forces a turnover, beats another Bruin to the puck, then fools a great goalie.

Happy to have Marty but it sucks knowing this guy has years left in him and he won't be a Ranger.

Can you maybe direct this to one of the 10 other threads that aren't about paying respects to Callahan? Don't need to read the same garbage over and over in this thread too.

No problem.

My favorite memory of him is his SH goal against the Devils in the year we beat them in the first round.

This boards sudden hate of a player like Callahan is one of the reasons it's not as fun to discuss hockey here.

Here's to a great New York Ranger.

Can you not taint this thread, the guy was a warrior for us. It's a damn appreciation thread FFS. Ryan Callahan made me proud to be a fan of this team, if you somehow missed out on everything he did on a nightly basis, that's truly a shame.

Glad we didn't re-sign him.

That being said, he was a leader and a fantastic Ranger. Very happy and honored to have seen him for the years we did.

I'll be wearing his jersey to the game tonight and he is someone, I will always root for, even if he ended up on a rival.

Hope Sather puts a more reasonable offer this summer! I really thought he would be a lifer.

Great Ranger. Always put it all on the ice.

I'm gonna miss him despite by dislike for his game this year. Great guy, great player when he's on. He always put it all out on the line cliche cliche etc.

It hasn't hit me yet, but it'll hit me and I'll be very sad, likely tomorrow. Too pumped for MSL now to get too down.

This. I liked Callahan a lot. He just priced himself out and has been a different player this year.

When it came down to it, it was the right move, that said, it's a tough pill to swallow.

I will feel bad seeing him in a different jersey.

Guy was, in an odd way, a huge part of my life for quite some time.

I absolutely loved the way that Cally played the game. He was a great leader by example for us and the intensity he brought was something I enjoyed watching.

With that said I respect that he's entitled to ask for whatever he wants for a new contract and I can't be mad at him for that. Wish him the best in TB and wherever he goes next year. Gonna miss his passion in the ice but in the same breath I'm happy he wasn't signed long term for that cap hit.

He'll forever be etched in our hearts. The world will never forget the 4x winner of the Steve MacDonald Extra Effort Award, only one behind the legendary Adam Graves. This prestigious awarad has been won by previous legends like Brandon Prust and Jed Ortmeyer.

As much as I was very adamant about trading Callahan because I don't think he is worth the money he wanted, I can absolutely say that it was a complete pleasure to watch this guy wear the rangers sweater....

It was so great to be able to root for this guy as we emerged out of some dark years as a fan base, and it was also great to watch a young feisty player become the captain that he is today.
