While the statistics you gathered are interesting, the problem is that they don't really tell us anything about the peak of those players - the oldest of those players pretty much at the end of their peak (as traditionally defined) while the youngest have played for less than 4 seasons, and will no doubt improve on their best seasons. Also, due to the variance in players involved, I'm not sure if we can really draw any meaningful conclusions from comparing the top-3. I mean, Ovechkin-Malkin-Ladd vs Stamkos-Filatov-Wilson? I feel there's just too much noise there.

If I went further back than the Ovie + Malkin draft I would not know about the pre-draft discussions so that would be less interesting for me. I do get your point though.

When I read other posts talking about how overhyped Laine is I wanted to look up how recent previous top prospects have performed. I agree that each player is an individual that can't be defined by previous statistics, but I believe historical data gives a bit of perspective, especially taking into account the different type of players.

Thoughts on converting him to center?

The Leafs once acquired a big, young, Nordic scoring winger with a similar style of play and converted him to center. That turned out pretty well. In other words, I think he absolutely has the capacity to move to center, regardless of what his feelings on the matter are.

Laine has all the tools to play all the positions thanks to his two-sidedness and creativity. He's however not used to carrying line defensively. Not quite sure if it'd be a good idea to try change the position since his best weapon is finding the spot to place a shot in the net. Sure, playing in the middle would increase his value no doubts.

You're way overvaluing Laine. How do you get Laine AND Laine in trade without giving up Laine+? Laine << Laine + Laine, and it's not even close.
You can increase the value by retaining 50% on Laine and throwing in Laine. Laine + Laine for Laine + Laine is a fair trade, IMO. Then wait for Laine to hit RFA status and sign him to an offer sheet. It's clearly the ideal situation for Laine.

I like that he's playing playoff game, seen concerns for him being soft due to his low penalty minutes.

And Boom there's Laine, can't believe we have this level prospects growing up.

And again it's damm impressive to see these guys as their teams key playes.

Such a great player. Been playing great almost every shift and now scores with a great shot.
