Just liked he willed the defender to crosscheck him on his first goal?

I know the stat line will say 2 goals and yes he was creative and driving the play to some extent but stat watchers will be more impressed than NHL scouts from that one game sample.

He is still the 1B for the 23 draft so don't get all excited.

I think at this point he's clearly the better player than Bedard. Obviously his contract status might push him down in the draft but he's showing in this tournament that he's the better player.

The highest scoring 17-year-old in the history of the WJC:

Jaromir Jagr - 18 points

The highest scoring 17-year-old Russian in the history of the WJC:

Pavel Bure - 14 points (and named Best Forward)

NHL scouts were likely more impressed after the Sweden game.
Everybody knows he can score, but he was doing all the subtle little things that can lead to goals. He also showed an ability to absorb hits. He was feisty and didn't take crap from anyone. He was arguing with refs over small details to gain his team an advantage.

I came away super impressed with how well-rounded his game has become.

Who was the highest scoring double under ager?
You're referring to the NHL draft, I assume. This has nothing to do with being an underager in the WJC. Michkov has 2 more years of eligibility in the tournament, just like Bure played 2 more years in the tournament after scoring 14 points.

Robert Reichel was the highest scoring 16-year-old, other than Gretzky. Reichel scored 11 points....but he was a year younger than Michkov is now.

I’m always a lil underwhelmed by him but if he manages to get multiple points every does it matter?

still think bedard has the higher ceiling

Sure there were parts of his games that were impressive but being a bit pesky on a faceoff at center ice while wearing a full cage against a Swedish player isn't anything that's going to translate to the NHL.

The point is that the game didn't change any minds as he is considered one of the top 2 guys in the 23 draft and then there is the rest of the field at this point.

I don't think that it's clear at all and it's going to get muddled by Michov's contract status on draft day anyways.

So the choice for a team considering him will depend on factors outside of just who the better player is on draft day.

It has just as much significance as any other arbitrary date drawn in the sand.

I would think the record belongs to Gretzky.
Gretzky is the highest scoring 16-year-old (17 points), and Reichel is 2nd (11 points). But they were a year younger than Michkov is now. Michkov would've needed to score 11 points last year to match Reichel....and maybe he would have if he'd played.

Using the NHL draft ages doesn't make any sense. Hockey players grow up playing against players born in the same calendar year....The draft age is just to ensure that children (i.e. under 18) don't play in the NHL.

Wow, 1B. How good must be 1A, Mario lemieux like, I guess.

Gretzky's 16 year old performance was a full 47 days younger than Michkov is right now.

Too bad he wasn't born a month later, he'd be a triple underager like Bedard. Poor Michkov was born at the worst time of year. He and Wright are both double-underagers for international purposes, but Wright is essentially an entire year older.

You probably think McDavid was one year younger than Michkov in his first WJC?..

Reichel was 4.5 months younger than Michkov. And it was in 1987-88 year, when scoring was way higher, than nowadays.

Could his KHL team try to get a soccer-like transfer fee from his NHL before his contract runs out? Maybe something like 5 or 10 million?

Years ago I remember the Jackets GM saying that they paid CSKA 200k to get Zherdev out of his contract.

Let him develop in Russia. This idea that he needs to be in North America right away is idiotic. The team that drafts him just needs to be patient.

I doubt Gazprom will need those few millions... And it's without saying that NHL strictly forbids such deals.

He said he signed the SKA contract to make his parents financially secure for life. Probably any 15-16 year old would do the same given the immediate opportunity.

Are all NHL entry level contracts 2-way? If so, he could theoretically spend half a million USD to nullify the SKA deal only to then make, what, $80k in the AHL?

I think it all depends how much he plays for SKA and how successful they are. If he wins the Gagarin Cup in the next two years and scores quite a few points , I think he will have nothing left to prove.
