The east has no cup contders outside of Florida and Tampa, and hasn't in years.

The west has seen 3-5 legit cup contenders every year in that span

If you rank the league by points percentage, Washington and Toronto are both top 5, but 6 out of top 8 are Western teams.

Interesting. This same discussion was had when Chicago and LA were winning all of the cups. Only flip the conferences.
Not really the same thing. In LA/CHI's 4 years of exchanging cups, either team could've won.

What we're seeing here was 3 years where Tampa was far and away the best team in the east, and now year 3 where Florida likely is

Not how it works. This is the same as the Atlantic the last 7 years. All those cup contenders will eliminate each other in the first 2 rounds. First year I can remember the Atlantic doesn't have the clear cup favorite.
Agree, I would say that this the main reason Toronto never makes it out of their own division. That said other than FL i don't see a team that can beat them in the Atlantic. If they go out in the first round again than their issues are in their head or the team culture. They are definitely talented enough for a long run in the POs.

San Jose, Chicago, and Nashville are in the west
But, but, but Nashville won the FA market.

Leafs basically need perfect luck. Matthews already been injured all season, we are one Tavares injury from being in huge trouble.

Things they have going for them this year: Top end goaltending and a pace/system that is supposed to work better in the playoffs

Things against them: *gestures broadly*

The Western Conference is 185-160-42 against the Eastern Conference. The Eastern Conference is 202-148-37 against the Western Conference. So, despite the Western Conference being top heavy, the Eastern Conference has won 441 points while the Western Conference has won 412 points in inter-conference games.

The second thing the new commissioner should do is decree that all regular season games are worth the same number of points. Obviously the first is to get DOPS up to snuff.

If Carolina was in the Pacific, they'd win the division for a decade straight. Best systems team and management in that hypothetical by far.

Washington is smoking the East conference in the regular season... who could've guessed when it seemed them and Pittsburgh were going to constantly be on the fringe playoffs.

It is safe to say that over the last 10 years the eastern conference has been the best conference over all no matter how many SCs have been won. Right now 5 of the top 6 teams in the NHL are from the west. Has the power in the NHL moved from the east to west? Right now, I would say this is the case.
3 of the top 6. I guess cherry picking an exact moment in time to show a power shift may not have been the right call.
