It will be interesting to see whether Michkov refused to meet with and/or play for certain teams. I can’t imagine that’s the case but I’m also befuddled as to why teams like the Sharks and Habs seemed to have no desire to draft him.

i can understand SJS picking Smith because he’s still a quality prospect with much less risk. Montreal at 5? Complete disaster. My only explanation is either the interview went horribly wrong or the GM is scared shitless for his job and can’t wait 3 years

Is it crazy to compare him to Pavel Bure? I mean his potential/style.
Nowhere close in terms of speed/skating, but better playmaking and IQ than Bure

Perfect situation for Michkov. Glad he's not going to the Habs.
I wanted him to go to Montreal. In a bright spotlight of the Hockey Mecca where fans have been longing for elite scorers and who cherish skill on the ice. He would have been on every billboard of a hockey crazed city

Different style. More like Kucherov/Kaprizov. Not bad either...

Some pervert mind from my head wants to see how Michkov and Tortorella would work out. Would be guaranteed entertainment

Tortorella loved Panarin very much, and Michkov's style is even grittier. Tortorella would love the kid, Matvei's probably as crazy about hockey as Torts.

Rejoice Flyer fans! For once things went our way. This guy has clear potential to be a near 100 point scorer in his prime and the best player on a true contending team if all goes well.

To get a prospect of this caliber at #7 is really quite incredible. Almost like winning a draft lottery. Maybe the hockey Gods are balancing the scales for the Nolan Patrick disaster.

Flyers fans should be stoked. Or at least less morose.
A talent like that doesn’t drop to 7 for no reason. And it wasn’t just because he has a KHL contract and won’t be ready for a few years like most prospects anyways.

He dropped because
A) NHL GMs are very risk averse, and there is significant risk with Michkov.
B) NHL GMs also have a short shelf life. Most are lucky to make it 6 years with a club. There's a decent chance Michkov isn't in NA until 2026.
C) NHL GMs get shit wrong all the time. Even at the top of the draft.

Happy for Michkov. He was under sh1tstorm from canadien media more than a year. Didn’t want him to be there. He will be painful opponent but i will happy to see him more.

flyers are lucky. Like they won lottery with second pick as a price. Like gift, not Carey Price - he and his team deserve everything they will get after three four years.

Btw we can finally put to rest the '148 lbs' story based on his measurements 3 years ago. In his post-draft interview Michkov stated that he's now 5'10.5 (179 cm) and 178 lbs (81 kg). Definitely looked like that on the ceremony as well.

He's about as tall as Danny Briere, and Briere is 5'9. On the other hand Briere had 116 points in 124 playoff games, and the league was way tougher than now when he played.

In that picture with Iginla he looks pretty stout. Definitely not scrawny.

This guy will bring the sweat on Bedard. I really hope Phil is in good place when he arrives. I think going at 7 will eventually be good for him. This will get him more energy and motivation. Yakupov got way too relaxed and arrogant.

So I have question. He is at the draft. Seems very happy to be picked. Why sign a KHL contract for so long? Is money the reason? I truly don’t understand so if anyone can explain to me thanks.

Michkov said he wanted financial security for his family. He was only 16 when he signed, so I'm inclind to think his parents had a big part in the decision.

When you have millions thrown in your face at 16, you take the sure thing. The NHL is still miles away when you're that young. Anything can happen.

So he ended up at #7 and Philly, I'm happy.

About the "he shoots like Matthews and skates like McDavid... you can't overhype him!" no 1 OA - I'm convinced that purely by talent, Michkov is the best player of the draft. Bedard has a super professional attitude/approach and is already very well trained. Michkov has still has a lot of room to grow here. And besides his shot, Bedard has imo no exceptional skill. Even his highlights were relatively unimpressive with most of him destroying German speaking teams. But Bedard deserved the #1 and Chicago did everything right.

The Ducks and Jackets took the easy, low-risk path from their point of view. But Carlsson and Fantilli will not be the bus drivers on the way to a possible cup. However, I did enjoy Carlssons interviews. I like his natural confidence, he certain has some kind of boss aura. Maybe the Ducks picked their next Getzlaf here. Otherwise the Jackets staff and probably half of Ohio can look forward to being invited by Fantilli to his birthday parties - but that's all there will be to celebrate.

The Sharks should have picked Michkov. Strange preferring this year's U18 MVP to the two years ago, who was already dominating the tournament 16 years old. Smith is nowhere near Michkovs level. But you could play the fresh prince and create good vibes.

The losers of the draft are clearly the Habs. Price pulled himself out for the last seconds, but even that didn't help. Luckily for them, Reinbacher will make sure that no one forgets his name ever again. We could see that right in his face. And he has the talent and attitude to do so. Only a Michkov he is not.

The Yotes clearly picked accidentally the wrong Russian and thought we wouldn't notice if they just pick another Russian winger. I feel sorry for my Russian brothers who now have to serve in a gulag in the desert. But Im glad its not Michkov… who was already wearing the Yotes suit.

Congratulations Philly. Imo the winner of the draft.

I can’t f***ing believe it. Still in disbelief. LFG!

We deserved this after getting screwed out of Kane (JVR instead) and then getting screwed with Nolan Patrick

I think Michkov's style of play is better suited for the NHL, actually. Imo he's better in traffic than in open ice. His ability to find open spaces and allude defensemen in close is uncanny. That will serve him well in the NHL.
Still, his passing skills are really are evident off the rush. For a kid his size he's very multi-dimensional offensively. He drives the net and even forchecks rather well. His defense is a work in progress, but whatever.

What a great pick-up by Philadelphia.
