Michkov will spend the next 3 years under his shrewd guidance. That's one thing to be aware of when deciding whether to draft Michkov or not.
His assistants are Zubov, Koreshkov and Shafranov, I don't think anyone doubts that they are qualified enough.

only two things stop me from agreeing completely.

1. If I was Arizona I’d be thrilled that he can’t come over for at least three years. New building will be sorted and gives me time to build.

2. Everyone knows they need to get to 7. When he gets to 3 teams should start considering the cost of moving up. When it gets to 7 they should pay it. I know trade ups in the top 10 are rare. But so is this situation. Players of this level aren’t there at 7. And if he gets to 8…you know Washington is taking him.

I would be shocked if he makes it past Phoenix since his delayed is actually a positive for them. I think he really fits their time line and actually Chicago’s time line before they won the lottery.

Michkov's skill development should be fine with those assistants. But his in-game usage under Roten has me terrified.

Russia U25 and Belarus have played what feels like 100 times already since the KHL season ended, lol. They at least got to play Kazakhstan a bit, but now they're in the World Championship (they were able to avoid the ban despite being Russia's number 2 ally because Belarus is being used as a jumping off point for Russian troops into Ukraine, so they aren't as directly involved in the invasion). These players have gotta be getting bored.

This is some incredible evidence and some that changes my mind on drafting him if he's available. Right now I'd rather Smith at 5 because of Smiths elite hands and vision but if MM can continue to develop against these men Wow what a pickup he will be. I do find his shot awkward in traffic and on the rush causing him to loose balance and have tunnel vision though.

I know people are making excuses for him but Michkov is really having a tough time in the U25 tournament. Looks like he was a scratch or spare forward today. Fans don't seem to be noticing much but I'm sure scouts and GM's are.

I think he looks fine, I've seen two games and I think he had a point in each of them. I think you're correct that he's being used as a 13th forward/powerplay specialist. But that's just more the Russia coach who really really likes older grinders. Michkov is the youngest player on the team by more than 2 years (Minnesota Wild 2020 2nd round pick Marat Khudsnutdinov who is a July of 02 birth). It's more just a Russia coach quirk than any red flag.

I think he's got something like 3 points in about 8 games. Just saying it isn't helping his draft stock given all the other drama surrounding his situation. And there is always the possibility that he just isn't as good as some think.

That's the thing though... there is no "drama". His father tragically died and he is under contract for 3 more years. If that scares teams off, so be it.

Can we buy a super series with Canada ?

We have a super series at home

It is, today Russia lost to Belarus again and Rotenberg keeps making excuses, it’s just a complete mess

It's a disgrace Rotenberg is there in the first place all because of stinking corruption and nepotism. Shouldn't be allowed to coach a midget team let alone a national selection. Puffed up pillock.

The kid is 18. I mean name a player who lit it up playing for national teams at 18? Laine? Yeah, he did. And he scored 1 point in 6 international games and 0 points at WCH at 19 so you can argue it was probably some kind of a fluke.

If we take all time great Soviet and Russian players none of them even played at this level at 18.

As to weak teams, Kazakhstan beat Norway at WHC, and Belarus beat the same Team Kazakhstan 6-0 at their ice...
Laine hasn't really played any mentionworthy men’s national team games for Finland after the 2015-2016 WHC tournament where he scored those 12 points. The beginning of next season Finland had one of our worst ever national team coach (Lauri Marjamäki) starting right away in the World Cup 2016. So in the 3 practice games and 3 World cup games Finland was an absolute disaster. The whole team was neutered on the offence by the playstyle of Marjamäki. They lost all their games at the World Cup and couldn’t score more than one single goal in the whole tournament.

Laine was in fact still 18 at that time, and I would say that him not getting points then doesn’t prove at all that his magnificent WHC tournament earlier that same year was any kind of a fluke. The World Cup team was just simply terribly coached and that continued as long as Marjamäki was the coach. Then he was fired and thank God Jukka Jalonen was appointed as the coach. Since that Finland has been coached very well again. And in fact in that 2016 spring WHC tournament Finland had the other Jalonen (Kari) as coach, which also made Finland a very well coached team on that 2016 WHC tournament.

Michkov, born in Perm, Russia on December 9th, 2004, is a forward playing for HK Sochi on a loan, in the KHL. Michkov, who is just 18, has played parts of the last two years in the KHL. He has totalled 43 games, scoring 11 goals and 14 assists. The Russian right wing has also played in the MHL and VHL. At the VHL level, he has played 12 total games, with 10 goals and four assists for 14 points. Meanwhile, at the MHL, the Russian equivalent of junior hockey, he scored 68 goals and 39 points in 107 points across 84 career games.

That production is incredibly impressive for a young kid playing against men. He has been consistently ranked top-five, and that’s despite the “Russian Factor” that is usually cited. He’s been ranked second by Draft Prospects Hockey, third by FCHockey, Daily Faceoff, Recruit Scouting, and DobberProspects, and fourth by Smaht Scouting, SportsNet, Craig Button, McKeen’s Hockey, Bob McKenzie, The Hockey News, and Elite Prospects.

Yeah, and it looks like SKA and Team Russia's head coach's system doesn't rely on skill and finesse, so Michkov doesn't look great in that system.

Belarus is a national program that I think was steadily improving before their ban. It hadn't quite carried over to the Senior level yet, but you could start to see at the U18 level they were really establishing themselves as a team that was avoiding relegation from the top level 10-team group and had a nice little streak of Quarterfinal appearances going, due to results like this http://reports.iihf.hockey/Hydra/765/IHM765A06_74_3_0.pdf and this http://reports.iihf.hockey/Hydra/765/IHM765A14_74_3_1.pdf. In the last U20 they appeared in, they earned a promo back to the top group and tore through the second tier division with a perfect 5-0-0 record and +18 goal differential. Of course then they got banned, so we don't know how they might have done the following year.

Looking at their roster now, they have a lot of players that play on good KHL teams, and not solely just bringing along the Dinamo Minsk roster (which itself is a mid-tier KHL squad). Not a national team that you'd expect to start beating Canada, USA, Russia (the A-team that is), Sweden, Finland or Czechia anytime soon, but one that could definitely be competitive with the rest of the teams. Not really sure the reason for their improvement (they cratered off in a pretty big way once all the Soviet developed players got old prior to that), other than speculating that their dictator is a big hockey fan and so maybe there was a renewed interest in building up the hockey infrastructure.
