RW/LW Vasili Podkolzin (2019, 10th, VAN) Part 5

I remember the 2019 NHL draft and commentators were saying that Podkolzin was one of the players Detroit should be considering picking at #6 along with Cozens and Zegras and Yzerman surprised everyone by picking Seider(rated mid teens) instead which almost everyone including many Redwings fans thought was too much of a reach.

As it turns out, Steve was right all along as it is starting to look like Seider might end up becoming the best player from that draft when all is said and done.

Stevie needed a win after the Zadina disaster in 2018. That hurt a lot.

At this point, you'd think almost anyone from Abbotsford would be better for you guys.

After 51 games, he still has a pace for 20 points.

You could call up Klimovich or Lockwood from your young guys.

Or what about one of the 2 Sheldon's?, who are having awesome seasons
Dries has 12 goals, 7 assists, 19 points, in his last 9 games.
- give him 15 minutes (or more) of ice time instead of Podkolzin
who is doing nothing substantial with his minutes atm

Let Podkolzin work on his NA game, let him get more ice time,
opportunity to get a feel of scoring goals and points in NA, in the AHL.

Its so stupid to let him play in the NHL, just because.

“He plays physical and he’s hard on the puck and sometimes we have a tendency to have guys not hard on the puck,” Boudreau explained. “He’s big and strong and you need that late in the game when you’re winning because you need to win the board battles and he’s getting better at it all the time.
“I use him because he’s going to be a really good player and I want to give him confidence, and he’s earned it as well."

I think most people were reasonably looking at Pods this year and hoping for 20-30 points, with strong physical play. I think that's pretty much what we have got. I can certainly see him developing into a 40-50 point power forward, big fan of this kid.

He lacks finish right now, I think that comes with maturity and confidence.

Podkolzin is great because at worst he's a net-zero-event player and at best he's a positive contributor. Those are the players who win hockey games.
You can only have so many people with explicit offensive mandates. Podkolzin is a two-way player and is going to be a player I expect gets a little better every single year without ever showing any massive step forward while consequently rarely showing regression.
I also put a lot of faith in Igor Larionov's takes on Podkolzin because he's one of the most respectable names in hockey.

Which is perfectly fine for a 20 years old rookie
There’s flashes and struggles this year, everyone knew that, it’s called progression

Why are you focusing on him? He’ll get 30-40 pts next year and more after that,

He’s adjusting to the NHL and he’ll be better, not every player come in with a bang

Weird time to bump the Podz thread with this, he just had one of his better games of the season last night.. created a lot of scoring chances.

He looks great next to Horvat. I wouldn't be surprised if he has a monster sophomore year.

He’s coming off probably his best game of the season and has been getting better and better as the season has gone on. Arguably our hardest working player. I think he scores tonigh.

He's also been papered down to the AHL, so he can join the Abby Canucks on their playoff run. I think that'd be a pretty great opportunity for him, given that the Nucks are all but eliminated.

 

[Hoglander]

He's looking pretty good. Doesn't help when he sets up guys that don't finish the play. He sent Horvat in on a clear-cut breakaway last game, but of coarse you wouldn't know this from just stat-watching.

 

[GiGi1994]

I've watched a couple games of his and I'm pretty excited with this guy's futur. He got a mix of hard nose forechecking mentality and offensive skillset. His shot is underrated. He's dangerous around the net. He is so strong with his legs. He looks heavy in the corner, consitently winning his board battles, an active stick to break plays. He understand the game. Very interesting player. It looks like he might develop a good chimestry with Horvat too.

I don't see him ever being more than a 50ish point player, but he brings the style of play every team wants in the post-season.

Podkolzin's reputation is being some sort of net crashing power forward that doesn't think with the puck but he's actually one of the best passers on the team.

He's poised to be a bona-fide top 6 forward that is absolutely relentless on the puck. I bet his career trajectory will be like Ryan o Reilly.

IMO Podkolzin has shown very well in the last 8 - 10 games. He's gaining confidence. He is trying to beat guys wide (with some success). He's making smart passes and he is relied upon to be solid defensively. I think he has a bright future and, for me, there has been a noticeable uptick in his play recently. Sounds like he'll likely be headed to the A for a playoff run, if/when the Canucks fall short of playoffs. Sounds ideal.

It's been all about learning the league & gaining confidence, he's already strong enough & talented enough to contribute in every way.

Lately he's been more confident & your seeing flashes of what he can do.

I've thought all along he'd start as a solid but low impact player then have a steady progression, and that's what has been happening.

Podz is a beast, he's gunna be a really really good player in time.
