After reading some of the comments on here "Bust" may be a more appropriate name

Not sure yet though. He has had hard times now. He is finn after all, he might get he's **** together and start working humbly up tho he's potential. I follow KalPa closely, and there is reason he has been predicted to go early. Now he has great chance to prove who he is.

Kapanen said he will try to fight for a spot in the NHL next fall. WHAT A LOAD OF RUBBISH! This kid is really delusional. He should try to be a core player in his own SM-Liiga team first and after that think about the nhl.

I know there's been a lot of talk of attitude problems lately with him but how else is he supposed to answer that question? "Yeah I'm just gonna languish around here in finland or the ahl next season". Of course you answer you're going to try and fight for a spot on your team.

Get used to it. He is the most hated finnish prospect of all time just because his last name is Kapanen. If his name was Kasperi Virtanen, nobody would care about his "attitude problems".

According to scouts, he played well in the U18 tournament and his performance doesn't affect his draft position at all which will be top-15.

Yeah, I can understand that. It was just amusing that someone was seriously complaining the kid answered an interview question in the only way you really can answer that question. Besides, what 1st round prospect doesn't answer that question that way, really?

This "attitude problems" talk is ridiculous. He's not Joel Armia, Kapanen actually trains his ass off and wants to be a better player.

This talk has nothing to do with his off-ice charater, working out or something else.

It's just about his play on the ice, where he looks arrogant, lazy and selfish.

He's delusional for trying to be the best player he can possibly be? Man, what a cocky kid right? I mean, an athlete trying to better himself? Who does he think he is?! Attitude all up and down the walls, right? RIGHT?!

Wait, shouldn't every player go into camp with the goal of making the team?

That's a very defeatist attitude you have there. I'm not saying that he could break an NHL lineup as soon as next year, but I like his ambition. And I'm sure he wouldn't look out of place at an NHL training camp. Getting experience at training camp, then playing in the AHL with a possible 9 game call-up to the bigs wouldn't be a bad route to take, and I'm sure he would be ready for that.

You don't think he was a core player already? Definitely was, he played consistent top-9 minutes throughout the year with PP time.

This. He was at the same level as guys like Rajala, Salomäki or Nättinen were when playing in Finland. All of those guys have done well in AHL. It would be crucial for him to get out of his confort zone and out of Kuopio from nurture of his father.

Kapanens achievements in SM-liiga are far from Ma.Granlund, Salomäki, Armia etc. Those guys were core players valuable to their teams. What exactly has Kapanen done to be considered in that company?

Nobody said anything about Ma.Granlund or Armia. Salomäki was 3rd liner who played some pk with Kärpät, not really a core player.

Hei, Salomäki was totally a core player! Was a better point scorer than kapanen and hardworking powerforward and scoring was not his main job. Scored most of his points in ES. Now salomäki is all that in ahl and the top scorer of his AHL-team. Kapanen being a finesse player who should score points isnt even scoring points......

First of all, I seriously doubt people "hate" a 17 yo kid just because they see undesirable elements in his game. If they do, there is something seriously wrong with them anyway. Secondly, why would people "hate" him because his last name is Kapanen? Sami has always been a well-liked player, and I don't think people have issues with hockey bloodlines, but rather see them as a plus. One can hardly argue he wasn't worthy of a spot in KalPa, considering the state of that organisation (i.e. scream nepotism).

I actually thought the most interesting bit about that interview (the one on top of the site) was that he said that he would come back to Finland if he didn't make the NHL team (which, of course, is very unlikely). I wonder if he also referred to the AHL or if the plan is to come back to Finland unless the near-impossible happened and he made his NHL team. Anyway, I do wonder if Finland=KalPa, which seems like a rather bad option. I doubt KalPa is much better than it was this year, and let's be honest this year's team was terrible, and what development will he get without playing with at least a decent center? He'll get playing minutes, for sure, but not much else. I mean, maybe Sweden(Allsvenskan with the possibility of SHL) might be a good option like for Lehkonen, if all other Finnish teams are out of the question because he doesn't want to play against his dad's team.

This.

And Kapanen is also the most overrated finnish prospect ever, he just isnt that good, guaranteed bust.

Are you trolling?

I'm not going to make my own arguments as to why or why not Kapanen should be overrated, as I haven't paid a tonne of attention to him (or to Sm-liiga this year). BUT, I will say that it's a fact that many scouts have seen him play this year many times. And I haven't seen one list since like September where Kapanen wasn't in the top-30. "guaranteed bust" means that there's no chance he will ever make it to the NHL. Does any NHL scout think that? I doubt it. Yet you do think that. Are you seeing something that theyre're not seeing? I doubt it. Therefore it sounds like you're talking out of your arse.

It's been a while since I've seen HFBoards collectively hate on a player as much as this, for no apparent reason too aside from a below-standard short tournament.

And yet not one of those hate posters are from outside of Finland just like every other Finnish prospect thread

Yup.

McKenzie actually compiles his draft rankings based on polling actual NHL scouts. In the last ranking (post-lottery), Kapanen was listed at #9.

Now we have a few ways of processing information....

1) Assume that McKenzie has chosen to speak with the NHL's most incompetent scouts.

2) Assume that all of the scouts are lying to McKenzie about Kapanen, but not about the other top prospects that seem to be about where you'd expect.

3) Assume that a random anonymous poster on HF Boards knows more about NHL prospects than actual NHL scouts.

Hmmmmm.... decisions, decisions, decisions. :sarcasm:

Any idea on the actual height and weight of this kid? eliteprospects has him had 6'0" 181lbs but other places have him anywhere from 5'9" to 5'11" and 165lbs.

Did Granlund even play in the SM-Liiga during his 17-year old (draft) season?

Kapanen's team was very low scoring. If you adjust his point total for his team's number of goals it adds some perspective...

Proportion of team's goals in which the player had a point:

Armia (2010-11): 0.20
Kapanen (2013-14): 0.18
