Shane Wright set a precedent, so now’s the time to try it if you’re ever going to.
Shane Wright played as a 15 year old. He’d be eligible had it not been for Covid taking a season, that’s why he’s getting the exemption.

Will still be 4 years of CHL or 20 years old. Had Wright played in the Q or W he’d be fine. Columbus can try, but they’ll just be wasting time asking. Dumais played 3 seasons, as he never got the special exemption needed to get into the AHL at 19.

Velano was in the AHL at 19, because he had exceptional status, just like Wright. This is no different, other than the OHL not operating for 2020-21, which they are obviously considering a year towards Wright, of which the Kraken would have a pretty solid case to make towards Wright’s eligibility.

Wright asking for, and getting, the exemption had nothing to do with talent, it had to do with the special exemption and lost season the OHL incurred. Would have absolutory nothing comparable for Dumais.

And that kinda thinking is why it wont happen.

You make one exception, and all of a sudden everyone wants that exception.

As someone already mentioned, he lost a year he would have played to covid so you can at least argue that for him which is reasonable. If covid didn't happen he would be at his 4 years of CHL service.

Even making this slight exception for Wright already has people thinking why cant my guy get it? Would just become a massive headache and then how do you pick and chose who gets it and who doesnt?

I know how it works man, but Wright is a unique case.

The Covid season did count as a full season toward Wright’s “eligibility”, like it did for every other player who missed the season in the OHL that year. So along with his 15 year old season, and 17 year old season his 16 year old Covid season counted towards his eligibility.

It was last year where he didn’t get enough games played to count as a year towards his AHL eligibility - you gotta play 25 games over 4 years, or complete your 19 year old season to get AHL eligibility. Wright only played 24 games last season, thus missing the games played requirement by one game.

First time I can remember where a player was given an exception from the CHL/NHL agreement but it was a situation that never happened before and was catering to the spirit of the rules.

So precedence has been set, so it’s the best time to try if Columbus and Dumais wish to get an exception.

There’s no precedence for Dumais, there’s an adjustment on a special exemption rule, with a special circumstance.

There’s been no precedent set for a guy with no special exemption. There is one for a player with special exemption who spent the first half of the season in the AHL/NHL.

More than welcome to try, but will be a waste of time.

Maybe Dumais can make the WJ team this year and even if he is back in the Q there are still things to work on just maybe not offensively.

There's not much he's going to be able to work on against kids that would translate to grown men. He needs to be in the AHL if he wants to continue to grow his game. Playing in juniors will be an absolute waste of a season for him.

It's reality the AHL simply isn't an option, if Dumais has the mindset of there is nothing more to learn then he won't benefit but players control how they react.

Imagine giving him exempt status for the echl instead of the ahl. Let him dominate that league.

Otherwise if over seas is an option do that.

The notion he has "nothing to prove" at the CHL level I don't think is entirely true. He could absolutely use this season to dial in on how he influences play defensively and in transition for pro hockey. He can get even stronger in the gym and work on his speed.

One criticism I still have of him is that doesn't use crossovers super efficiently and lacks NHL-level separation speed. For someone his size, that IMO will be the difference maker for him whether he's a 3rd liner/AHLer skill guy or a Top 6 skill guy who and can change the pace of play with his skating combined with his elite IQ and vision and become a big threat. It's very hard to run on that IQ and skill alone at the NHL level.

Not to mention he gets a chance at the WJC, instead of being yo-yo'd back and forth between the NHL roster, the press box, and the WJC. He needs consistent playing time and the Blue Jackets are now trying to move out of the rebuild. Dumais I am almost certain is not NHL ready yet - he's 19. I understand the sentiment from a statistical perspective, but he is still a flawed young player.

Realistically, how many 3rd round picks end up sticking in the NHL as a teenager, let alone thrive at that age? He's a smaller guy, so he'll need time. Give him 9 games where you can give him a solid look, then send him to the WJC as well. I wouldn't recommend being silly and throwing him into the fire full-time and expect that he makes a quantifiable impact. If he wants to get better and prove people wrong, which he has spoken of even post-draft last year, then he will do that and seek out the guidance to do so. He's already improved his strength, shot, and skating in 1 year.

For him to go over seas Halifax would have to approve that....which I mean just isn't going to happen. He will more then likely be playing in Halifax.

A precedence has not been set at all. If it wasn't for the Covid season Wright would have been eligible for the AHL. If Covid wasn't a thing Dumais still would not be eligible for the AHL. Now if they let Dumais go, that right there would set a precedence that would open the proverbial flood gates going forward. Which is exactly why it has no shot. Like I said earlier, waste of admin time.

I presume if Dumais wasn't already signed by nashville he could go to Europe.

I don't believe his contract status with Columbus has any baring on his ability to go to Europe. It essentially is that Columbus has two choices. He plays in the NHL or they send him to Halifax. Once they send him to Halifax they have no control over his season and for him to go to Europe they would somehow have to convince Halifax to do it themselves.

Like I said in the post if you bothered to read it - Wright’s Covid season counted for a season of junior eligibility. That wasn’t the problem.

The problem is that the CHL-NHL Transfer Agreement states that prospects drafted from either the OHL, WHL or QMJHL cannot be re-assigned to the AHL until they have either turned 20 years old or played in four seasons. Twenty-five games played is counted as an accrued season. Shane Wright finished with 24 games played last season.

Fact of the matter is, Shane Wright is the first player I’m aware of to get an exception to the CHL transfer agreement, if we’re not talking the Covid AHL kids. So now is the time (if there ever were one) for Buffalo to try to get Savoie in the AHL early, or Columbus to get Dumais in the AHL early.

But those aren't even remotely the same situations lol you can argue it all you want but you know as well as I do that both Savoie and Dumais will be thrown out in a matter of seconds if they file. It is just going to be a non starter.

Well, I believe you are wrong about that.

With the contract, his assignments are controlled by the Jackets, who are bound by the CBA, and CBA doesn't allow them to assign him anywhere but back to his CHL team.

Without an NHL contract, what is to stop him? Any agreement with the CHL team would not be enforceable by courts, or IIHF, as it would be established when he was underaged. So, really, he should be able to go as he pleases if he doesn't sign an NHL contract.

However. He would have to compete for a roster spot and ice time with pretty good players, with many overseas leagues limiting the number of out-of-country players on team rosters. Dumais may be too good for the CHL, but is he capable of winning a roster spot, never mind a top-6 roster spot, from some non-teenage players? So, he's likely to end up in Allsvenskan, DEL, etc, and not NL, SHL, Liiga. All said and done he may be better off stayng in the CHL.
