It's strange to see a player with this type of production manage to be a -24 in 52 professional games. Odd statistic, even if it means very little.
The Amerks have been a trainwreck defensively the last couple of seasons. Not sure if it's the system, personnel, or a combination of the two.

who else has torched the AHL as a prospect in this manner for this many games?

I’m sure there’s more but I can only think of Guentzel off the top of my head and he was older than Quinn.

I would love to see a couple games with Power Peterka and Quinn getting a shot to play together to close out the year. Give the team a taste of who they will be next season.

I’ll be honest I didn’t know there was a limited amount of recalls. Seems like dumb rule that accomplished nothing g helpful other than limiting opportunities for players to get a chance to live there dream
The teams have 4 non-emergency, Buffalo used 3 as paper transactions to allow Samuelsson, Krebs and Fitzgerald to be eligible for the AHL playoffs.
You have unlimited emergency recalls so it's mainly to prevent roster manipulation

And he was plus 10 in 7 WJC games and plus 48 in 62 OHL games. He played first PK on Ottawa and was always out protecting leads. He has a good work rate and knows how to play defense. Just a team stats.

Weird thing to cherry pick especially because this year he is -9.

They must have their reasons - perhaps Quinn is still nursing an injury?. Next season he will be in the NHL.
He is a late bloomer physically, still needs to fill out. Despite being a late in his draft year he was still one of the most under developed players in the draft. I think they are doing it right, nothing wrong with letting him rip up the AHL and continue to grow into his body.

He also had mono and an LBI (probably ankle sprain) this year. They brought him up to Buffalo, he played 2 games and looked very good, and then got hurt again. I think they'd rather have be one of the go-to guys in Roch this year and make a playoff push. I assume that they were considering a late-season call-up, but Rochester is in grave danger of missing the playoffs, and they can't afford to lose Quinn.

That's pretty flawed. It values junior production . Lots of kids in the SHL that are phenomenal prospects that didn't make that list that should have.
It looks like it values NCAA production too. But yeah, there are a lot of reasons why this model should be looked at with skepticism...especially for defensemen and players that don't get a lot of ice time because they're in a euro men's league at a young age, etc.

On the other hand, with NHLe becoming popular, I appreciate it being pointed out when players are kinda breaking the model at such a young age like Zellweger and Quinn are doing.

Euro kids that play in men's leagues are just about universally under-valued by these sort of models. They fall into a weird gap where they're too talented for youth leagues where they'd put up gaudy numbers, but they're not getting substantial (or sometimes even regular) ice time with the men's team and, so, don't score much. Prospect stat-based models are also notoriously shit at valuing defensemen, so I'm sure there's plenty of weird rankings in that regard, too.

Still, Quinn is having an an insane AHL season, and I think it's fair to expect him to be immediately productive when he becomes a full-time NHLer next year.

I'm not trying to devalue Quinn who has been fun to watch in the AHL and agree that he's one of 5 or 10 guys on my Calder watch list for next year. I just wish that there was a better model to capture defensemen and euro pro leaguers.

There is and it's called knowledge of the game of hockey and what makes a hockey player. I don't mean to insult you as I include myself with this. Most of us here don't truly possess that knowledge. Analytics will only take you so far.

I think it’s more complicated than that though. Even if one possessed the knowledge of the game, nobody has the time, nor ability, to watch all these players enough to make an assessment. It’s why analytics are so enticing, even with their shortcomings.

Teams employ multiple scouts across the world that are very knowledgeable about the game, and yet still get it wrong more than they get it right. Thus teams continue to invest more and more in analytics. It’s not perfect, just another tool to provide more information.

What's going on with this guy in the playoffs? Only 2 pts in 8 games after such a dominant season. Is he injured? On the other end of the spectrum, Peterka hasn't slowed down one bit. (haven't seen any playoff games, only looking at boxscores)
