Wasn't even drafted in the OHL which, while not taking anything anyway from how well he's played with McDavid, says something. Late '97 so I believe he was passed up in two consecutive drafts (despite a highly productive season with his high school team last year)?

Obviously you can still do well after being passed up in multiple OHL drafts, other players have done it, but he's got a hard road ahead. Even next year since he'll play with Strome it'll be tough to gauge him as player on his own. Right now he's incredibly tiny, and I'm not all that impressed with his skating. Still he must be doing things great.

I do want to know why no team drafted him in 2013 or 2014, and why no one else signed him. Plenty of impossible to sign players get drafted anyway? That must have been a good reason.
Claude Giroux went undrafted in the OHL draft. :)

He's definitely benefiting from a good Erie team, but the more I watch him the more I see he's got some real talent. Hard to give a definitive judgment so early into the season though. My prediction is that he ends up a very good junior player and puts up high numbers his 18 and 19 year old seasons. I think he'll be drafted rounds 3-5 in 2016 (late 97'). Don't know that he's physically gifted enough to ever crack the NHL but I can see him doing very well in the AHL and then making his money in Europe.

wow, kid might as well just throw in the towel right now...

This season is pretty much going to be a write off for him. Its all about next year, without McDavid.

Brophy's article on DeBrincat --> Otters rookie forward Alex DeBrincat thriving in a big man's game:
DeBrincat, now a 16 year-old rookie with the Otters, leads all Ontario Hockey League freshman in scoring with 43 points (24 goals, 19 assists) in 30 games. He is plus-31 and ranks eighth among the league's top scorers. The next highest rookie scorer is Petrus Palmu of the Owen Sound Attack who ranks 75th with 10 goals and 20 points in 28 games.

Worth noting that, on average, boys grow ~2" (with huge variance of course) from 16 to 20. So even though he's 5'7" now, it's not unreasonable to think he'll top out around 5'9" once fully grown. He'll likely always be small, but not necessarily a midget.

His point totals are certainly inflated from playing with McDavid, but he's still a talented player with plenty of grit. Reminds me quite a bit of Brendan Gallagher, and I can see him being similarly good. I definitely think he's a legit NHL prospect.

Edit: whoops, noticed I already posted in this thread, and really just repeated myself. Regardless, I like him as a prospect.

Just scored his 34th goal of the season, along with 33 assists. Broke Connor McDavid's record of 66 points for the Otters rookie scoring record.

here he goes again...netted number 35 so far in the game against Ottawa..

granted McJesus did the work, but the kid still needs to find the net when he shoots and his numbers as a 16 year old are downright outrageous.

can't wait to see him and Strome running the show in Erie next year...doubt the point totals drop that much to be honest.

kid has some serious wheels, I love how he can take it to the outside wing with ease..he is flying out there.

he got knocked down, but got off his butt and then went after the Ottawa defender who knocked him down and gave him a few cross checks right before Baptiste scored...little guy has some jam, I liked seeing him get in the opposition face.

wow...what hussle by DeBrincat...kid just made one heck of a play to set up that last goal. completely outworked the Ottawa defender...

AND...barely 1 minute later...

and just set up another goal!!

1 + 2 =3

kid is making things happen out there with and without McDavid.

Actually someone posted a chart a earlier on this page that says otherwise. But for a rookie, he is doing phenomenally anyway. Will be interesting to see how he does in his draft year without McDavid

I believe he was more specifically referring to this game, where he really only played with McDavid on the PP.

You can't teach his instincts for scoring. I've got him 5th among OHL skaters for the 2016 draft (behind Chychrun, Brown, Kyrou, and Day). I'll just echo the sentiment that I want to see what he does post McDavid.

agreed.

but in 22 games without McDavid he put up 24 points (according to my quick count) as a 16-17 year old...that is something you cannot deny at all..

yes he plays with talent but so what, you have to be good enough to play with talent as well. people thought John Leclair was just a byproduct of Eric Lindros...check out the numbers he put up without Lindros around. sometimes it takes playing with a star to become one yourself.

a lot of pressure will be on this kid next year which is his draft year, but from the way he handled himself without McDavid, I think he will be just fine....now just grow about 2 more inches and we are all set!

True. If he keeps it up next year I'd easily move him up to third among OHL skaters.

still putting up points and goals...over 40 goals and 80 points for a 16-17 year old rookie...no matter how you slice it this kid produces with or without McDavid...

Yet another monster game for the kid...

2 + 2 = 4 points

43 goals and 46 assists for 89 points on the year for the rookie...yet people still keep dismissing him...

Next year will be interesting for DeBrincat for sure because he could be playing with Strome (if he comes back), or be playing with someone like Petit, Marchment, or Maksimovich. This alone will probably play a big part on whether he puts up similar numbers next year or not.
If Strome comes back next year, DeBrincat will probably put up similar numbers as this year

No one's dismissing him. You said the same thing about Ebert many moons ago. Let him play without a generational talent on his line and let's see what happens. No one should pass judgment until them.

anyone who thinks he is rode passenger to McDavid this season, I'd refer them to the game he just played tonight
