FLA is about to drop out against TBL. Provided that Gudas is available, he'll add some very dearly missed grit to our team.

That'll help, but he's not the most mobile defenseman right? From what I remember.

I think Sustr and Masin would be worth a look, as Czechboy mentioned.

I am rooting for USA and all ex-Soviets (Belarus first, Latvia second). Since Latvia doesn't really have much of a chance against Canada, I'll watch Belarus - Slovakia.
I've become a huge fan of those types of matchups between 2 nations battling for a quarter spot. Can't wait for Belarus vs Slovakia as the game means a LOT to both nations.

Canada is obviously better but Latvia, I think, will give them a very good match today (I'd have a different answer in a few weeks). Canada shows up with limited practice and kind of works their way through this tourney some years. I don't even know when they got to Latvia to practice with quarantine and such. They'll be rusty today... it'll go away with time. My point? This is exactly when Latvia wants to play Canada.

I actually think Latvia does have a glimmer of a chance against Canada. Those guys have only been on the ice together for a few days, they usually struggle in the openers. Not that Latvia is any good but if there is a chance to do anything against NA teams it's in the opener.
Exactly, I don't know why people think Latvia has no chance, the Canadian team is not that good and Latvia is not bad + these Canadians have never played together. I wouldn't be surprised at all if Latvia won

Today's Czech performance has been really disappointing. I was so excited to watch some entertaining Czech hockey, but all I saw was a disengaged team full of passengers, being pushed around by a dominant, but not unbeatable Russian team. Zero grit, zero passion and the effort (apart from the last 10min was) was really dire. Also, what changes did the coaches make to change that?

We've had them by the balls throughout the last 5-10min, but we made a stupid mistake which cost us the game. We always have to learn it the hard way I guess. :help:

Agreed. But good that we get a tough opponent early so we play better and start caring!

I feel like our goals against were from stupid mistakes.. only one that wasn't was the weird penalty call on Hronek.

I remember we had a line at the last world's... I 'think' it was Jaskin with Zohorna's They were just in everybody's every shift. Maybe it was Kovar.. definitely 2 Zohorna's and someone. But they just seemed pissed off the entire tournament and agitating everyone. I didn't really see anything like that today.

Just saw a great comment online:

We'll learn and move forward and the Russians can congratulate themselves for winning against this year's champions

Remember 2010.. we almost didn't make quarters.. I think our final record was near .500
2011.. we sent an awesome team (our last great team at the World's IMO) and we went undefeated, lost in semi's and won bronze.

The .500 record got us Gold
The .900 record got us Bronze

Of course this is a different time and I'm a joking a bit. I think we're a contender and this game didn't make me think otherwise. Russia looked good!

I'm going to say canada 4-3 over Latvia in a weird one (if ever there was a time for fans, that game would've been great!)

Slovakia 4-3 over Belarus in OT.. Slafkovsky sneaks in a point.

Yeah, I remember - watching the WC 2010 was one big treat, especially the playoffs. Every single game (QF/SF/F) was a nailbiter (vs. FIN/SWE/RU)...

I agree with you. We've got a good team this year, but it's just disappointing to see this effort, knowing that they are capable of so much more. Nevertheless, let's stop whining and start hoping for tomorrow!

Fingers crossed for SVK!

Yesterday the Latvian Parliament approved an exception to lockdown rules for Worlds that would allow vaccinated spectators and spectators with antibodies to attend the games. Unfortunately, they’ve only had one day to iron out the details, so the policy hasn’t gone into effect yet. As you say, this would have been a great game for Latvian fans to see.

I currently sit 3rd on fantasy....thanks to Berliner line :P If not for Bruckmann four goals I would have been first :/

I get that, but you guys are much more successful than us. I just think if guys like Nagy and Meszaros represent Slovakia. Why not Labanc, Studnicka, Tuch, etc?

Hmm....not sure why you brought up this topic, since your nation lured rosandic and Mykhula to play for Slovakia. That's why I will tatoo Belarus flag on my right arm just for tonight's game.

Labanc ? That's sounds quebec-ish to me ?!

Still would rather have one thread for one game. Its way more transparent and i don't think its a big deal to make it work. Sometimes you want to ask about certain game/player performance and it'll be a bit weird to ask in some weird collective thread like this
