Everyone has retrospective goggles on now. I didn’t even think Jones + Koskinen was fair to the Oilers because of Keith’s extra year.

Somehow our offer was even worse considering we didn’t even end up getting rid of Koskinen’s cap hit and we added a third (which could even become a second) on top too.

Jones is not much of anything. A third may or may not become something. Koskinen is terrible. Keith has more value than those three pieces together even with the extra year.

Is it worth it, who did they save? Dumba? How do you ice a competitive team those 2 seasons with 15M in dead cap? Which could very likely still be flat. Bettman said 3-5 years at least did he not?

Definitely not worth it but they will be able to save Dumba now.

They probably still need to do something with Talbot/Kahkonen.

To be honest though it's probably better for the wild. No one was going to take on those contracts, they get mad cap savings this year and years 5 onwards. Yeah years 2-4 suck but the alternative was playing them and Parise was being benched anyway. Guerin probably came to the conclusion it's easier this way

Considering the dead cap space they probably were better off trading Dumba for a 2056 7th rounder.

I mean Dumba is good and young, but how the hell can you build a team with all that dead cap space in year 2-4?

So if the Oilers waited a day they could have made a play for Suter... :ha:

I'm not saying Suter is going to sign here, but if the Oilers offered him 5.5, which is what Duncs is earning, I mean that's probably one Suter considers lol. Who else is going to offer him 5.5MM?
Suter is not coming to Canada LOL

Imo it's worth it. The other scenario is they lose Dumba, and then lose Parise and Suter (in regards to a decline in their play). Parise's already like 4M overpaid, and Suter while still a top 4D is also overpaid. In a couple of years both those guys could be 7.5M dead cap on their team, and they would have no Dumba.

They're dead cap space anyway. Parise was being benched during the playoffs. At least they can sign KK97 to a contract now

We overpaid for Keith but lets face it, not many players actually want to live in Edm if they had a choice - one thing we can't forget.

We are not Florida, Tampa, Vegas or NY

Canadian born players are generally OK with playing in Canada, especially if McDavid is on the team.

American born players with American families who have never played or lived in Canada ... that is a tough sell for any Canadian market.

Agreed I could see a last ditch effort on getting a cup there. I don’t think he would have come to Edmonton for sure either, but I think he will be a great cheaper pick up somewhere.

As odd as it sounds, I could see picking up Keith making Edmonton a more appealing option for him.

It's one thing to be told "come here and play behind Nurse and above Lags/Jones/4K", and "come here and play behind Nurse and above Keith".

The more I think it through, I don't see money factoring at all in his decision. He's going to sign for 2 mil with whoever he views as the best opportunity to win the cup.

It's all good. Will be loads of movement before, during, after the expansion draft, draft, free agency for us to see all the movement we completely excluded ourselves from participating in by being blinded by 3 cup rings.

Suter was never an option for the reasons that others have already covered, but the idea that there is going to be lots of movement and we could have taken advantage of that is 100% accurate. But instead we just wasted $5.5 M in cap space and won't have the flexibility to take advantage of anything. Chia 2.0 strikes again! What an idiot.

How much cap space will we have using Klefbom ltir as it is now ?

A little over $16M I believe. Assuming that Larsson, Yamamoto and Smith come in at around 8M (which is on the optimistic side), that's 8M to spend before any buy outs, salary out trades etc. so obviously Holland is going to have to move a lot of money out to fill multiple holes with quality players.

Funny thing is for Suter financially he is probably in a better situation. He as only owed 10mil, he's getting 6.67mil of that from Minny. Now all he has to do is get 3.34mil in the next 4 years and he's better off financially.

On top of that he's probably going to go somewhere that he has a better chance to win.

Personally probably not ideal, but from a hockey standpoint more than ideal.

Heck even Parise probably is going to end up getting that cash over the next 4 years.
