Sorry yeah, they get one year of savings, three years of virtually nothing and then 4 years of dead cap.

It would have been crazy if they bought one of them out but both is beyond comprehension. They're paying $42M in dead cap for the two of them in Years 2-4. That's unbelievably bad cap management, worse than anything Chia and Holland has done tbh.
I mean the obvious answer is they want to protect Dumba, but now they just lost a ton of cap space and can't build around what they have as well.

Let's also not forget after year 1 there were lots of people wanting Zuccarello gone. Granted he had a good year, but they better hope he doesn't go back to having a bad year.

Guerin really making a mess

He clarified afterwards that he hadn’t heard that, it was just speculation on his part. Probably without checking the cap penalty. Makes no sense.
Either way, I don’t think they were gonna sit tidy with Keith’s caphit if Hamilton and Jones were available.

My biggest concern coming out of the press conference is hopefully Adam Larsson re-signs. That would be a tough hole to fill.

They would save 1.5 mill this year and 900k next year in buyout that's it. They also would have to deal with the optics of buying out Keith which wouldn't of gone well.

The cap savings wasn't near enough to make it worth it.

How is it worse?

Higher cap hit, won’t sign here but the optics are worse?

Make it make sense.

I explained.

Same age, same point in contract, high cap hit, declining player.

One was bought out, other was traded for two assets.

Whats so hard to understand?

Maybe Kenny could talk Seabrook into coming out of retirement or whatever for one last job.

So what this all means is we probably won’t sign a goalie worth a damn and we’re staring at some ugly reality of Koski/Stalock/Skinner next season.

One was bought out cause he didn't want to waive his NMC and the org basically screwed themselves over doing it.

Just because another org does something doesn't make it good.

For one year and a bucket of cash and the chance to play with McDavid he might.
Highly doubtful. At his age he is going to go for a cup and places like Tampa that need to cut cap would love to pay him cheap to win a cup with him. Or the Islanders. Tons of American teams are closer to a cup

That one team valued the contribution of said player more than the other.

Chicago wasn’t planning on buying out Keith or trading him until he asked to be traded.

You’re tying the two together to make a point that doesn’t exist.

This is why I'm not entirely behind the Keith deal this early. There are too many things that haven't happened yet. And there are a lot of teams that are desperately going to want to get out of contracts and get out of salary commitments.

Keith was an investment that doesn't have an overly high level of upside, while there's still a reasonably high level of risk due to age.

It would be frustrating to see Suter sign in Boston or Chicago a week from now knowing that we jumped the line for a lesser player.

Suter isn't signing with Edmonton (I can confidentially say no chance) but somebody like Leddy could have probably been had for cheaper with less risk.

Generally I agree though, there was absolutely no reason to rush this trade for the reasons you mentiioned.

Shame we don't have the space to offer him like a $5.5M contract for some reason

This still begs the question. Why did holland make that deal now?

I'm thinking it had to do with expansion as Holland confirmed he's going 7-3-1. Right now, the only two dmen worth protecting are Nurse and Bear. Larsson's spot is vacant and he may want to test UFA, Barrie's is vacant, as is Kulikov's. It made no sense to protect Russell as Bouchard is auto-protected as he's on his ELC. Now he has three d-men to protect and can expose Russell.

I would just like to congratulate Ryan Suter on signing a 5 year 5.5 mil contract with the Oilers. Another Chelios to add to our stellar D corps!

Just so I understand your logic - American players don't sign in Edmonton? Is that supported empirically?
American players who have spent their entire hockey career in the USA. With a family, don't go move to Canada suddenly. Staying in America has always been important to him.
