I don't trust Beer League Heroes for his own rumours, but he is good for gathering up quotes from media people. Stauffer apparently said this on Oilers Now some time last week about Kassian and the goalie situation:

Oh shit, and after Duncan Keith specifically name dropped Kassian as a guy he's happy is on the team.

It was Kass for Jarry. The rumor a couple weeks ago.

Anybody got intel on Jarry? Is he any good?
I know enough about him that he gets beat high glove a decent amount. I'll give you three guesses who his goalie coach was when he was on the Oil Kings.

Hahahahaha oh boy. Yeah, I think Im good haha
I don't know that Jarry is the answer for us. Seems like a very hit and miss goalie. Was decent a year ago and not so great this year.

With that being said very similar dollars, but one year less on Jarry. So there is that to think about.

Maybe YOU are Stauffer! :sarcasm:

That would be the worst having to push Oilers propaganda 24/7. Bob can't really come out and say "that was a bad trade" but rather has to explain the reasoning behind the move. I wouldn't be able to do that...the money must be good though

Weird thing with Pitts goalies though...

Great one year, they replace the old guy who wasn't as good, next new guy is better, next year they replace them. They really don't seem to give much room for goalies to have ups and downs. Team defense isn't really good over there either. Really hard to get a good read on goalies out of there.

Keith mentioned Kassian because he knows how he plays and Kassian is the type of player we need in the playoffs. Maybe Keith thinks with his style of play he can help get Kassian back to playing the way he is capable. Maybe Keith can get this team to where Lucic failed after his first season. Maybe ;)

The difference is that Keith didn't have to go anywhere.

- Chicago doesnt want to get ugly with their greatest dman of all time
- They dont want a disgruntled dman in their room
- They want to pursue dougie/jones and need cap room

Sure, he didnt "need" to go anywhere, but having him stay wouldnt have been a great option regardless. More then enough reason to see if you can atleast wait them out right?

Yeah agree. Holland is just an idiot, he had all the leverage here.

If the Oilers even stood firm and insisted on $1.5 million salary retained, Chicago would've caved. $4 million in free cap room is still better than nothing, $4 million in a flat cap is a shit ton of cap relief still.

Buying both guys out saves them like $11M in actual cash this year right? Might be one of the biggest reasons this happened - pandemic and all.

They didn't need cap room. They have over 20m in LTIR and they aren't in any way a competitive team. If Keith's desire was to play in Western Canada, the opportunity was either there or it wasn't. A buyout wasn't going to change that, nor was it in any way logical for Chicago from a financial standpoint.

In a flat cap, every team can use cap room.

It's like saying bottles of water have no value in the middle of a desert.

They keep Keith and 5.5 mill of their cap is used up on a guy who's unhappy to be there.

Guerin and Holland are going to have a dead cap off.

Holland ain't got nothing on Guerin. Guerin in one fell swoop destroyed their cap for 3 years after next season, $42M of dead cap for two players over that time period. One of the most baffling buy outs of all time, to protect Matt Dumba? Sheesh

I like the amount of hopium being injected right now with 4d chess moves being speculated by Holland.

I'm not buying it.

Honestly it would be incredibly hilarious if Chicago turns around and signs Adam Larsson with the cap space they got here, lol.

At this point it would just be funny.

Was Edmonton the only place Duncan would go? Or did they have leverage there?

It wasnt logical because the Oilers were willing to solve the issue for them.

If the Oilers werent there, buy-out while not making the most financial success, would of made a lot of sense for the reasons I listed above.
