I heard Seattle and Vancouver he was willing, but really wanted Edmonton.

I think that's a big part of the whole leverage conversation. I don't think we were the only option but the preferred destination.

In theory Holland can ask for salary to be retained with the assumption that Keith has negative value. Keith would likely waive to Seattle and its possible that Seattle takes him.

I think Holland was drooling when he heard Keith was available and values his pedigree and knows how to win. To me the assets are pretty much negligible and Holland was willing to overpay him in cap to get those things on this team.

Not saying I agree with it but the number of hall of famers willing to come to Edmonton are probably in short supply.

Great one year, they replace the old guy who wasn't as good, next new guy is better, next year they replace them. They really don't seem to give much room for goalies to have ups and downs. Team defense isn't really good over there either. Really hard to get a good read on goalies out of there.

Holland ain't got nothing on Guerin. Guerin in one fell swoop destroyed their cap for 3 years after next season, $42M of dead cap for two players over that time period. One of the most baffling buy outs of all time, to protect Matt Dumba? Sheesh

To be fair, Guerin didn't sign either of those guys to their contracts. I doubt he's taking ownership of this and isn't interested in waiting to ride those contracts out.

If the Oilers buy out Koskinen and Neal (adding to the Sekera/Lucic cost), $5.7 million in dead cap for 2023 and 2024 suddenly doesn't look so bad.

The guy is pretty smart. Assuming most GMs have a 5-6 year leach. He'll get tons of cap space just as the walls start closing in on him.

3 cups! That's really all that mattered here. Jones a 3rd and 5.5M cap hit for 3 cups. That's a win any day of the week for the Oilers. Basically you get half a Kevin Lowe in a league full of players the equivalent of a Kevin Lowe toenail.

If the Oilers werent there, buy-out while not making the most financial success, would of made a lot of sense for the reasons I listed above.

Chicago actually has to work to keep their fans interested though. May have still been a hard decision to make if we didn't pay to bail Bowman out.

Keith wanted out anyways, so a buyout wouldn't be like they were disrespecting him. Just that Keith was using his bargaining power he earned with his NMC and forced the buyout, just like Suter and Parise are doing. Keith also had the bargaining power of retirement, which would be extremely bad for Chicago's cap situation with the recapture penalties. It's amazing what a gift the Oilers were to Bowman to completely avoid all this stuff.

Closest Suter will ever get to Edmonton is in low effort zingers on the main forums by people who would realize they aren't nearly as clever as they think they are if they read the whole thread before posting.
