Since Holland seems to be prioritizing now over 2 years from now he may as well trade Gagner as a cap dump with a pick as a sweetener and sign Bassard or Thornton if willing. If enough left over also push for Maroon.

Bassard and Maroon would temporarily shore up our forward weakness.

40 Year old Joe Thornton has made over $100 million in his career... I doubt anything but a golden chance to win a cup would interest him at this stage... so that crosses the Oilers off his list completely.

So one move I circle back to is trying to move Benning + and get Pysyk out of Florida. They save a little money, get an asset with Benning the Oilers improve at RHD. I don't think it's outlandish to approach.
Why? By every metric I can find Benning is his equal or better. Pysyk is also older and more expensive. This seems like a "grass is greener..." Type move that we dont need.

Thornton and Maroon? I thought the goal was to get faster, not make our bottom 9 the slowest in the league.

What are you actually talking about? Matt Benning is not as good, let alone better, then Pysyk.

Some texted into Oilers now asking about why the OIlers aren't shopping Russel, and Stauffer said Russel is 'currently their 2nd pair right d, situations are fluid.' or soemthing to that extent.

Stauffer also mentions that 'Maroon might have to take 800,000.'

Personally I would be all over Maroon at that price.

There is no chance Thornton is signing in Edmonton for that money. Getting traded here during the year I could see, but he won't sign here.

I realize that... was just responding to the "too slow" comments.

A player like Thornton/Pominville would still be useful players no matter their advancing years but obviously they also have to have a reason to go to a new team instead of just retiring because money likely isn't a big factor anymore and the chance at a cup would be "not high" in Edmonton.

The magic # is $1,075,000 as that's the cap hit that can be completely buried in the AHL so any player signed at or under that level is essentially zero risk imo.

Fair enough, I have a lot of time for Pominville if he would sign for a reasonable dollar.

I know a lot of people want some perfect option but for $1 million, it's very hard IMO to look off Maroon.

You could maybe run a setup like

Maroon McDavid Kassian
RNH Draisaitl Neal

For times you want to divvy up the scoring load. Connor is comfortable playing with Maroon.

It’s not so much about trading high on Nurse or not, as it is about it not making sense to move him period. Klefa, Nurse, and Larsson are 3/4 of a pretty solid top 4. McDavid’s value will probably never be higher than it is now. It doesn’t mean you move him either. Moving Nurse likely just sets us back, and sends us back towards the old days of having a brutal defense.

The only way I move Nurse is, after this year, if Jones plays the whole year and looks like a second pairing dman, and Bouchard looks 100% ready for top 4 duty the following season.

Even then...

Just think if they keep some Dmen. In a few years the Oil might have one, yes one, veteran Top4 dman. Maybe even two!

One competent vet Dman after years of having none?!

Vanek and Williams are 2 more options still hanging around out there on the UFA market... I assume they'd rather retire than take a $1 million 1 year deal.

Who knows though... maybe the Oilers get a vet to take a Spezza-type league minimum deal just because they want to have a chance to play with McDavid in Edmonton. :)

I bet Minnesota is trying hard to get a Spurgeon extension done. If he won't commit then maybe he's traded this summer. It makes too much sense for the Oilers to go after him. One year from UFA should make the asking price palatable and he's from Edmonton so I bet he'd extend here.

Draisaitl - McDavid - Kassian
Maroon - Nugent-Hopkins - Neal
Nygard - Brassard - Chiasson
Granlund - Brodziak - Archibald
Gagner, Khaira

Benson, Cave, Haas, and Jurco as call ups. It's not terrible.

Maroon on a 1 year deal at 800K to 1.25M would be completely acceptable. He's still a useful NHL player and has shown chemistry with McDavid in the past. I'd rather have a group of players competing to play with McDavid and Draisaitl and would NOT play them separately.

Maroon/Neal - McDavid - Draisaitl
Neal/Maroon - RNH - Kassian/Nygard/Chiasson/Gagner

You can cobble together acceptable scoring lines from this grouping (with McDavid and Draisaitl being elite together).

Kinda surprised Maroon hasn't signed anywhere yet. He must be looking for a multi-year contract so he doesn't have to go through this again next summer.

Oilers should be offering for Spurgeon.
Russel + bear + pick.
I would be all over this.

I was wondering if the Oilers wanted to make a statement in a deal this offseason.

To CAR: Russell, Puljujarvi, Jones and a 2020 1st(unprotected)

To EDM: Pesce

I feel like this would perfectly fill out the Oilers' defense
