I'd like to squeeze Kreider in the lineup. That would somewhat solidify the top 6 on offense.

Kreider is most likely out the door as they just signed Buchnevich and have to re-sign Lemieux and DeAngelo already over the cap by 4 mill.

Compared to Spooner he's a HOFer.
If you compared Spooner and Stromes points goals and games played with the Oilers last year it might surprise you. I don't get the love for strome at all, there is a reasson he was moved and it was because he wasn't part of the solution. Sure Spooner didn't turn out to be valuable, but prior to the trade I remember watching Strome hoping someone in the organization recognized how poorly he was. With the money Strome costs we would have been able to improve by using it on another 3rd line center.

Kreider reminds me of Mark Stone, to a lesser extent. I assume he will be paid around the same as Stone as a UFA unless he signs in with one of the Florida teams. Don’t think he is the player the Oilers need to add right now. Save the cap take small steps forward, make sure they can sign Nurse and Nuge and keep developing from within. Wait to sign big UFAs once in a couple years once the developed D are breaking in on ELC’s.

Still think Burakovski or Athanasiou were the best options for the Oil in our top 6. Too bad both are signed.

I think the problem is you are evaluating Ristolainen as having a good contract when it's highly highly questionable if he is even worth the contract he presently has, you could easily make the argument the free cap space is more valuable than Ristolainen is. Also taking back a contract like Manning with one year left is pretty minor when offloading that amount of salary, he's easy to bury in the minors and the little more than $1M in dead cap space isn't that hard to digest.

It’s not salary cap Buffalo is worried about. It’s taking 3 contracts who may never play an NHL game for 1 who is a guaranteed top 4 D any way you slice it on a manageable contract.

I'd really like to see us land one of Bonino or Pageau.. Probably would have to involve some cap going the other way but we get a 3rd line center who is strong on faceoffs, can PK and provide 30 ish points. Pageau seems like the better fit because he's right handed and younger, but I think Bonino would be cheaper to acquire. At this point, we can't really afford to move Russell despite his flaws. Our D would be way too inexperienced and there's no one notable other than Gardiner/Hutton who can replace him on the UFA market. Gagner would be the next cap casualty option, but seeing what he did in Columbus playing on the 4th line with PP minutes makes me think he can be a solid contributor for us.

Ottawa is a team who has taken chances on young struggling players in the past.. Turris, Duclair, Filatov to name a few.

A Manning + Puljujarvi for Pageau and pieces kind of deal seems to make sense to me. It works out well cap wise for us. Ottawa makes a proactive move with Pageau being a UFA in a year. Maybe Ottawa sends a conditional pick based on Pageau re-signing?

Is it that questionable when Barrie is going to get 8+ next season? Risto has 3 more years at 5.5, Russel got paid 4x4. For his offence alone his contract will probably be an underpay.
I know some will gag at this comment, but I try to follow the MacT model, you don't care how strong a player is offensively or defensively, the bottom line is does the player create more than they give up, the more often the player is on the positive side of that equation the better they are. There is room in the game for people who give up more than they create, but the second you accept that as fact you are dealing with a specialist for example a prime Boyd Gordon who bled goals against, but did so at a lower rate than almost anyone when given a steady diet of checking assignments and defensive zone starts or for example Sam Gagner who's not winning the 5 vs 5 fight all that often, but can potentially contribute enough on the PP to justify his spot on the team.

Ristolainen is definitely giving up more than he is creating so he falls into the specialist category, for me the most I'm generally willing to give a specialist even a high end one is roughly $3M, the unique thing about Ristolainen is he is still young enough that maybe he can break free from being a specialist into an outright solid contributor, but then you have to ask what is the probability of that occurring and how much of a premium are you willing to pay a specialist for the off chance that occurs.

Also with respect to Barrie he's been a net positive contributor for quite some time, not all offensive d-men who are defensively suspect are created equal. Most offensive d-men who are bad defensively get on the positive side of that equation by minimizing defensive zone time and increasing offensive zone time, Ristolainen conversely gets oodles of defensive zone time cause he is among the worst d-men in the league at preventing zone entries with possession and creating zone exits with possession. Ristolainen is the offensive d-man who is bad defensively who has a high probability of getting hemmed into his own zone and his +/- while not the best stat bares that out.

Buffalo is no where near the cap so the cap space is no problem for them and they have an owner who is more than willing to pay money if the GM wants it. The market for Risto is limited if they don't want to take back money. There are very few teams that have cap space who might really be interested in him at the price Buffalo might want.

Exactly.

True if there's one thing Peter Chiarelli did well it was identify who was and wasn't part of the solution :help:

Strome was a decent depth forward... better than everything else the Oilers had in the bottom 6. He essentially was turning himself into a pretty solid 2 way 3C... which is a fairly useful asset that the Oilers are still looking for.
